The Incredibles vs Incredibles 2 Animation Differences

For some, a big gap in between The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2 may have been slightly irritating, however the space in between the two films gave creators the time to reevaluate the appearance of the film and its characters-and that’s exactly what they did.
Brad Bird, the creator and director of the Incredibles movies, has been a gold mine for Disney Pixar studios since 2004. That’s why when Disney decided to go ahead with The Incredibles 2 fourteen years later, its large budget-and advanced technology of course-allowed for animation changes that’ll blow your mind.
From changing Dash’s and Mr.Incredibles face completely, to adding in more details into scenes that existed in both films, watching scenes from these movies side by side is earth shattering-kind of like the Undermines Attack.
Even Edna Mode got not only an appearance change, but a home makeover as well. However, the best part may be getting to see more of Jack Jack, his demon form, and how that animation changed the dynamic of the Incredibles family and the entire film franchise.
What do you think of the animation differences between the two films? Do you think they were drastic or done naturally given all the improvements in technology? Let us know all your thoughts in the comment section below. If you like this video make sure to hit that subscribe button and give it a big thumbs up. Thanks for watching The Things Animated!

I caught most of them, especially the characters. Of the two movies, I prefer the first. I enjoy the story and art a little more in the first, than the second. One of the biggest differences in the characters, which I don't think you mentioned is the fact in the second movie, the Underminer doesn't have a chin. If you missed that I recommend a closer look.

I like to look at each film from the eyes of Bob and Helen. The first one you see how Bob sees the world. The second one how Helen sees the world. Especially because even though the entire Parr family is in the story and it focuses on them, it’s also a gives a perspective focus on both of them as heroes.

Because it's made only for children. Whereas the first movie was made for both children and adults. Kids would overlook the fact that Syndrome made a damn super hero genocide, and adults would realize that and take it into more into consideration to what happened.

More saturated colors, more shading and depth, Brighter and more Modern feel to everything. All in all, I was stoked when I heard this hit theaters, then saw it on Disney+ and loved it. I watched the first one just before, for nostalgic purposes, and the sequel Totally held up. There were some oddball Plot-Holes, but I figured it’s an amazing story with the Incredibles family and it stays fairly true to the original comedic energy from the first film, with its own twist.

I disagree, the second movie isn't made for adults as well as for kids, so not having the dark tone of the first one alienates the fans of the first movie. It's like Pixar made the sequel for your kids, not for you and your kids like in the first movie.

@@MidnightEden Yes it does, it definitively does. Mind control is the most boring plot point ever and it's so over-used that it causes no impact to the audience whatsoever, as you said, shock value down, it also drags the concept down a lot. Plus, it's nowhere near as dark as a Super hero genocide. Incredibles 2 looks like kinder garden compared to 1.

The only changes I didn't like were these: 1. Dash's super speed seems to be a little slower despite it being smoother. In the first movie, you could vaguely see him while running showing how fast he was. 2. Helen seems younger and less middle aged. Her being older in the first made her seem a little more like a mother. 3. Jack Jack's body language made him seem more like a 5 year old in an infant's body. It's a little difficult to explain, but just things I've noticed. 🤷

I know a lot of people like the more saturated colors of the 2nd one because we've all been conditioned to be drawn towards brighter and more vibrant colors by a lot of the CGI movies that came after Incredibles 1, but the more subdued colors of the first one were a storytelling choice to make the super exploits look a bit more grounded and to also juxtapose the ordinariness of their civilian lives with their superheroics on Syndrome's island lair which was super lush and vibrant. With the increased color saturation of the 2nd one, a lot of that visual journey of the 1st isn't present.

Every Pixar movie from toy story 1 forward is essentially displaying the small improvements in animation the studio made based on issues they ran into in the chronological movie before it. The improvements pretty much stack like Legos, and the further apart a sequel is created from its predecessor, the more noticeable the improvements are.

I didnt watch it yet but what Ive seen from the trailers the animation is very polished, definitely better and nuanced, plus it has cool effects. For an older franchise like Puss in Boots, this rebranding wasn't bad, and I think it helped market Puss in Boots to a newer audience, managing to keep it fresh. So, all in all, I dont mind the change, however, to each their own, I guess.

Honestly seeing stuff like this is pretty cool! Gives you the idea of how CGI movies look like then vs. now. 2 (As well as other movies like Cars 3, Finding Dory, Inside Out, Toy Story 4, Turning Red, etc.) is practically eye-candy (Especially if you watch it in 4K with HDR like from the 4K Blu-Ray), but I have a soft-spot for the style of the first one. Same goes for Toy Story 1 and 2, Cars 1, Bug's Life, Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo. In fact, I love the style of CGI animation from the 90s and 2000s like in advertisements, bowling alley animations, video games, music videos, TV shows and much more.

The first incredibles animation style maybbe dated compared to how its done now but the one thing that the original movie had over the sequel was the coloring, the original movie had more bland and muted colors to complement the more serious story, for a kids movie the original incredibled was very mature with the themes and stories it told, it didn't always need a stupid joke or something out of place to make it interesting cause the story idea alone about all superheroes being forced into retirment was interesting enough for the time, I think the sequel to the movie did do some things good but it will never hold a candle to what made the original so good

Tony is the animated equivalent of when the sequel to a movie casts a different actor for the part. XD

They really did a good job, everyone looks better but not so different that it's off putting. They did a much better job then some other movies *cough* HTTYD THW. Srsl, in that movies some characters are barely recognizable (Valka, Toothless)

The only change I dont like is how they animated Violet's forcefields in the sequel. In the first movie they actually look like forcefields whereas in the sequel they look more like purple bubbles.

The sequel is an improvement, but my major gripe is the skin. Subsurface scattering is one of the new techniques used, that gives skin it's slight red glow as a result of skin being slightly translucent and blood being red. However, nothing about it is "slight" in Incredibles 2. The subsurface scattering being set to high and the color grading being oversatured ends up making all human characters look like their skin is glowing red. I found it unnatural and distracting. That nit pick out of the way, I wonder why companies like Pixar and Dreamworks don't go back to do shot-for-shot remakes (with the same audio) of their oldest classics. They already have updated versions of their main character models due to sequels / prequels. Specifically, I'd love to see Toy Story 1, Monster's Inc, and Shrek remade faithfully with modern animation and rendering techniques. I think specifically Sid from Toy Story 1 has aged poorly, and desperately needs a Tony Rydinger like glow-up.

I don't know what makes you think that Dash's hair looks more realistic now. To me it's completely otherwise IF we wanna talk about just realistically. The new hair are everything but not a "real" hairstyle. Original hair were perfect for a little boy and most importantly real looking like. No funny cut of bouncing slice of hair in the air. Also nice platinum blonde hair chanched to dirty blonde, c'mon Disney! his cheeks more chubby. Sorry but seeing how they remake my favorite character like this. Dash's new desing was my biggest disappointment of the movie, sadly

This begs the question, if they weren't gonna recreate the original models, why did they stuck with the idea of picking up onto the first movie's cliffhanger?

I hate the second one, they changed the character’s image so so much and I was able to notice it since the first time I saw the second movie no side by side comparison needed. The first one was superior by far in animation, characters and plot. The second one just altered and modernized for no reason.

Idk, the animation is a lot better, But the color palette and style, went from something pretty unique, to the generic designs and lightning Disney uses for his films, (I.E. Luca, or wrecking ralph 2)
