Deep in the Indian Ocean, scientists have discovered a snail whose feet are covered in iron scales, making it look virtually indestructible. But how it builds these scales is still a bit mysterious to scientists. Join Olivia Gordon for a new episode of SciShow!

They once tried to invade the land and establish a colony above. For millennia they had prepared their army. Their strongest grew to be the size of a man with shells hard as steel. But despite initial success attacking defenseless unprepared towns humanity rallied its best knights to fight the molluscan menace. Many died but ultimately humans were victorious, sending the snails retreating back to the deep. Their sacrifice would be immortalised in paintings, only to end up becoming a meme

This is probably the reason why ancient civilisations were as advanced as they were, because they actually observed and learned from nature instead of just bulldozing and contaminating it.

@@jacksonpercy8044 they weren't and they did, atleast for the most part ancient civilizations weren't more socially advanced than us and often did damage to the environment depending on their tech level. For example Easter Island and how most megafauna went extinct after humans showed up. It's just now with more power and knowledge but not more wisdom our flaws can do far more damage. Of course there are notable exeptions but the majority of ancient civilizations had variations on modern day flaws or were conquered by ones who did.

@ambergris5705

I think I read about this species in the Bible. The carpenter Joseph asked young Jesus for some iron nails. Jesus made iron snails.

Are you sure, that Joseph didn't order Jesus to put some slugs into the competing carpenter across the street, who was ruining prices and was also suspected of having a secret love affair with Joseph's wive ?

Gabriela Montemor While you are certainly aware of it, looks are in the end perfectly irrelevant and even worse: fleeting. Everyone gets more uglier as they get older or if one wakes up in the morning. So don't put too much emphasis on it. So if you look like Olivia you surely are at a disadvantage, but that shouldn't affect your self-esteem. And be honest: would you really be interested in people who are only after your looks ? See ?

Goo Lagoon no, it’s based off of a beetle that eats snails and uses their shells, the steel-type is mostly representative of the hardness, but if GameFreak says what you said is right, I’ll gladly take back me saying you’re wrong.

@@-butterfly-594 not every "functioning" human has a basic grasp of science, and its better if we dont just throw them out of here, and "deny" them that knowledge. Should they know that stuff already? Yes. Definitely. Should they be obliged to know it to access scientific information? Not nescessarily. Its kind of revolting when they dont know, and thats only more reason to keep them close and learning.

Its normal snails which happened to come into existence near a thermal vent. They absorb/intake the minerals its spewing. Most the snailscan, others not so much (metals) their bodies try to excrete them. Which through its excretion and location it solidifies on its feet (their words not mine). Then it continues to excrete them but can't in same spot, so they overlap into overlapping plates.
