Condemnation Statement on the Attack in Phyu Township It is with profound grief and outrage that we condemn the brutal drone attack by the military junta on the Hindu community in Phyu Township, Bago Region, resulting in the tragic loss of seven innocent lives. The incident occurred on December 31st, 2024, in Zeyawaddy Town’s Amay Khaung area, specifically targeting the Ram Naga Hindu Temple, where worshippers were gathered in peace. Among the deceased are Niyarlit (45), Sunil (35), Devdutt (55), Nan Kumar (45), Gauthinder (32), Chhotelal (35), and Zaw Myo Oo (44). Four others sustained injuries, including Nan Kumar (45), Aramprakash (50), and Kapurchand. This heinous attack on a peaceful religious community highlights the junta’s disregard for human life and its deliberate targeting of vulnerable minority groups. The Hindu community in Myanmar has long endured systemic discrimination and violence under the military regime. This attack is not an isolated incident but part of a broader campaign of repression, targeting not only ethnic minorities but also religious institutions, including Islam, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and Chinese temples, as well as schools and hospitals. A witness to the incident described how the first drone strike occurred without warning, hitting civilians, including those attempting to rescue the injured. Moments later, a second bomb struck, causing further devastation and killing all seven victims. This deliberate attack on a non-combatant community, with no military activity in the vicinity, demonstrates the junta’s blatant disregard for international humanitarian law and human rights. The Myanmar Hindu Union unequivocally condemns this barbaric act. We call upon the international community, human rights organisations, and global religious leaders to stand with us in denouncing these crimes against humanity. Immediate and decisive action must be taken to hold the military junta accountable for their continued atrocities against religious and ethnic minorities. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and the injured. May the international community act swiftly to ensure justice and protection for the vulnerable communities of Myanmar. Myanmar Hindu Union 2 January 2025
