As American power and population grew in the 19th century, the United States gradually rejected the main principle of treaty-making-that tribes were self-governing nations-and initiated policies that undermined tribal sovereignty. For Indian nations, these policies resulted in broken treaties, vast land loss, removal and relocation, population decline, and cultural decimation.
The "Indian Problem" was produced to serve as the central video in the exhibition "Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations," on view at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. This video introduces visitors to the section of the exhibition titled "Bad Acts, Bad Paper."

You can't blame other humans for how your life is now. Anyone from any race can come to America and do anything they want in this life. Their parents taught them that they were held down by white people. But how did some black people become great men and women and become very rich and others didn't? I greet my Amerindian friends, I live in the south-east of France and after watching a last western at the age of 14 I began to learn the truth about the Amerindians, and since I spend all the free time writing about what I learned when I went to visit the United States several times, now I am not far from 80 years old I always keep this rage in my heart to help the Amerindians to regain their pride and their dignities. They had the luck to survive smallpox. That's what killed the majority of natives. They were not murdered. Also, killing in war isn't murder. Good. The Ottawa sided with the French during the French and Indian War. They lost. Then they sided with the British during the Revolutionary War. They lost. Then they sided against the United States a final time and lost their land in 1812. Pontiac was long dead though... having been killed by another native because of his own killing of another tribe's member.

I went to a church in oregon and a guest speaker praised settlers for “defeating the natives”. He spoke for 2 hours, referring to the natives as “savages”, “primitive”, “godless” and painted them as evil rabid monsters that roamed the hills. Western culture has a massive problem with ethnocentric bias and this becomes a slippery slope to hate and violence.

Pima?? I supposedly have Pima ancestry. Do you happen to know how people of India got mixed in with Pima peoples? My great-grandmother was 1/3 Native and 2/3 Indian. I moved to India in 2018 and found out towards the end of 2020 that I have Indian ancestry. My DNA test was done through an Indian company whose database is mostly Indian as opposed to European.Most of the Indian DNA is SE India, with a very small amount centered in north India and fading out towards Pakistan. Are there any stories of the distant past that indicates that Pimas came from a distant land to the west of the Pacific Ocean? On our side (India) we have history in Sanskrit that indicate something like this. Even the educated Indians of 14,000 years ago already knew that the world was round and had already identified the seven continents and the oceans of the world.

We are descendants of the hohokam. And even further than that ancient meso.... now people have always traveled... like good ol' dumb Columbus lost trying to find India.... hence the name given to the indigenous peoples here in what they call the America's "Indian" so there's a lot of different possibilities on how different races are in the furthest of locations of where they originally started from. Travel, or slave trade... idk if that helps..... I'm part of both "PIMA" tribe's here in Arizona. Onk akimel O'odham- salt river Pima. and also tohono O'odham- desert people down south formally known as the papago....

Yes,Parveen, this was much of what was concealed, especially during the Cold War Era,to fool people into running to America thinking it was a safe place,that had better standards of behavior than other Western countries. Communism,all the other isms are as bad,and even worse than most Westerners can know. But what happened in America is worse in one respect. It's really horrible on a personal level, because in my youth, we were taught that nothing like this ever occurred. And things that happened in our own countries, could NEVER happen here,right ?? And no, I'm not anti- American. Major shock and disappointment when finding out. And outrage as well. One should know everything good and bad about the prospective country they plan to move to, but in the study books for citizenship class, nothing remotely related to what was done to Native people ever came up back in the day. I hope things are more forthcoming in these books by now,at least !!

The video also, however, commits a tired old offense, unwittingly or not, by implying that the genocide against American Indians is past tense, that it happened in some age old time where nothing can be done about it today. On the contrary, the genocide continues today and has become far more sophisticated than the obvious barbarism of centuries ago. If you’re seriously trying to convey that argument then maybe it would work if we’re talking about the 1600s. The 1800s saw native Americans being killed with methods of genocide. They lost the first battle they had against the Mexica (Aztecs) and didnt even come close to winning it wasnt until they communicated with the Tlaxcallan a common rival of the Mexica and cut a deal with them that they would not pay taxes in the new world when the Spaniards won. Even with their muskets and metal armor archaeologists found evidence of such weapons and armor being useless in a close quarters fight. Secondly look at the Comanche war in the states where the US Army couldnt even fight them so they had to take away food supply killing thousands of bison and still couldnt beat them. If you believe Europeans did anything by themselves your a joke. It took Natives to kill Natives along with diseases and a cut of food supply.

When i was a child from about 1971 to 1976 my family lived in Oklahoma. My father was in the Air Force and we lived on the base. I went to school on the base.We were taught Oklahoma history. My parents home state was GA. We had an assignment to make an oral report on the state our family was from. Being from GA and learning OK history made me feel so much anxiety i asked my mother if i could use Spain as my home state since thats where i was born. When she asked why and i told her she told me it would be ok to use Spain. I will never forget her reaction. She told me she was proud of me to have such compassion at only 7 or 8 yrs old. She also told me that one of the the reasons we learn history in school is to be aware and not repeat the wrongs that were done on innocent people.

@@remshot1998 Well, that's true about intertribal warfare. Though there were some leaders at the time who could see that wasn't working, and it had to end, or they'd lose the continent. Lack of international news events get people killed. But no one from say, Asia could get here in time-- or things might have been VERY different.

I live in a area that is the home of Fox and Sac Tribes The Fox Valley and Not Far From the Rock River. The site of the Black Hawk War's. They were forced to cross two great rivers and a entire state to find safety. It's ashamed they aren't living here today.

I am Yupik, my mom was taken and put into a Catholic Boarding School, she never found our family again. I was taken from my mom by the government services. Sometimes I got to go back and live with her and she cried and cried. I felt like they did to me the same as they had done to her. It’s a horrible pain that never goes away.

I'm Colombia, mix race 23% native , 27% Spaniard and the rest from various places. I was born in cucuta a place with a large Indian population. Since a was young I was raised to feel proud of being white and to ignore the fact that I was as Indian as anyone there . Today I feel proud of my Indian blood. I don't look Indian outside but i feel connected to them . they are strong and beautiful people and deserve to be treated with love and respect.

I just finished watching this video and have to sit for a minute to catch my breath. What a heart-wrenching history. What I don't understand, is that the 'white' people left England for similar reasons, yet they treated indigenous tribes with unspeakable atrocities. I wish the history books would reflect the REAL America and not the heroics of the likes of Andrew Jackson etc. We need a lot more tribal sovereignty education in school curriculum.
