We tell a different story in school when we study history and civics. In that story, we tell that things were not cool that we did but we paid some money, gave them their own nation within a nation and all is good now so don't bother with that story too much. We want to tell a story of American exceptionalism because that's the story of "you can be anything", "if I can do it, you can too." What we don't want to tell is the story that much of how we got to this point is by taking what other people had and destroying them in the process. America and much of the generational wealth that funded the expansion and thus today's wealth came from free labor, exploitation of native people and the destruction of everyone from the poor to those who were defenseless in any way they were defenseless but that story doesn't sound as 'christian' as the one we want to tell so we lie instead. Almost everything i know about US history, I learned after school. It isn't to attack the US about either. It's to look at what humans actually can be and are and to confront that. America is just a story told on top of what human beings are capable of when they get power. We need to stop looking at it as a country thing as if the country was always here and look at it as a person thing where people did terrible things and then built a country on top of the spoils so that we can now do something about correcting whatever can be corrected.

I agree that this is a part of our history that we should know about, but currently it seems to me that the misdoings of non-native americans agains native americans, as opposed to the misdoings and attempted misdoings by native americans agains non-native ones, or inter-tribe warfare (native americans displacing other native americans), are covered disproportionally. Seems to me that this creates a sort of skewed picture of american history,
@SpinnerWrought5 жыл бұрын
@@TorBarstad but it is skewed, that's kinda the point... Settlers killed thousands and thousands of native peoples, disease resulted in the death of millions and then when things seemingly settled down and treaties were signed it was overwhelmingly the non native peoples who broke them. It's not disproportionate, it's just accurate; also, it's important at the same time to study specifically the atrocities done by those in power to make sure we never repeat them.

Last year I looked into my mother's history and discovered that she had been taken from her Passamaquoddy family when she was very young in the 1940s. My mother wasn't aware of this, only that she had been "adopted" and that her name had been changed. She was horrifically abused and neglected by her "family", in many ways that I will not get into here. She was also forced to get her hair cut short and dress as a boy because that was what they had really wanted to adopt. She was married off to a 40-something year-old "cousin" when she was 14, and she lost two pregnancies his abuses. I'm not sure how that marriage ended, but she was married three times after that, most of the times to abusers, always feeling that she "deserved it", and she has many emotional issues that she has been unable to let go of. I wanted her to understand that what they did to her was not her fault, but when I told her that she is a Native American, and not French/English like she believed, she broke down crying and thanking me for not hating her because she "is an Indian". She knows nothing of her culture, nothing of her real family, and at 81 years old, she feels it is too late to learn. This is what they did to those children.

I'm one of the Native babies who was adopted out to a white family in 1966 in Alaska. I'm Tlingit and Tsimshian, mixed with Pennsylvania Dutch. The white parents who adopted me were loving, middle-class blue collar/white collar, we lived off the grid about 1/3 of the year, and they did a good job raising me. They let me know from when I was 2-years old that I was adopted. Out of respect for them, I never went back to the tribe to find my birth mother, although I am a recognized member of the tribes by birth due to involvement of the Bureau of Indian Affairs since before I was out of the womb. I have mixed feeling about being adopted out of the tribe. I loved the parents who raised me, but I do know that I have missed out on experiencing a unique culture with the tribe and community.

So true, it IS still happening today... I remember when I was younger , talking to my grandpa and him telling me about family history and mentioning HIS grandparents were Mexican and Native Americans (I wish I could remember what tribes he said).... and I asked my grandpa why him and my grandma (they raised my brother and i) why they only spoke English and Spanish then, and not any native American languages.... and my grandpa told me, that he KNEW about his grandparents thru stories from his parents, but he didn't get to ever meet his grandparents. And he never learned to speak native American languages because his parents couldn't remember how (makes more sense now, after seeing this documentary)...😭😭😭 And when I was younger we would go visit my paternal great- grandmother's ( my Grandpa and grandma's mothers) in the summertime...I loved them so much and enjoyed visiting them in the summertime.... my grandma would have to translate for my brother and I thou , because neither of my great grandma's could speak/ understand English (both spoke Spanish) . It didn't bother me at the time, but now that I'm older, I can't being to fathom the pain it must've brought them to see their descendants (my brother and I) and be unable to verbally communicate with us without a translator... let alone how the parents in this documentary must've felt when they realized their CHILDREN that they no longer remembered their native language!🥺😱😭
