The Indonesian Parrot Project (IPP) has been conducting important conservation work to save parrots and cockatoos from extinction in Indonesia. The film shows the history and current work of IPP, the challenges of parrot conservation in Indonesia, and the importance of protecting parrots as flagship species. We zig-zag around the Indonesian archipelago following local researchers to show their work in action. We travel to the remote island of Masakambing to see the collaboration with local people looking after the last remaining population of the Abbotti cockatoo, to the Moluccas to observe the parrot rehabilitation and release center of IPP, and to the Komodo island to reveal how the famous dragons contribute to the conservation of a critically endangered cockatoo species. In the documentary we examine all aspects of parrot conservation including the roles and responsibilities of conservationists, decision makers, local communities and eco-tourists, demonstrating that success can be achieved only by well-organized cooperation among them.

I've been in Indonesia for 3 years now. Sadly they catch and cage almost everything that moves. It's rare to see a beautiful wild bird. They're all in cages on people's porches. So much more education has to be done to help people understand that if they keep it up there will be nothing left to put in a cage.

Its such a blessing to see Indonesia becoming conservation minded. The Moslem faith is like the old Hebrew faith where a man's wealth was gauged by how big his herds were. Overgrazing followed Moslem conquest wherever it went. The grain fields of North Africa were turned into desert after Islam took over. Even now in Sudan Moslem herders are at war with non Moslem farmers. If the herders win that farmland will be turned into overgrazed desert. Slowly Moslem nomads are beginning to understand that they world has changed and they need to change too. Animals were always seen as just a way to make money but they look around and see those animals are gone.

Its good to see there are people that are taking pride in the abundance of natural wildlife their home countries and communities have and believe it is something that has value in preserving. Like the video said it is difficult when people don't even have enough money or opportunities to provide the basic necessities for their families. In reality these people are also being exploited, being paid $10 for trapping a bird that will eventually pay someone upwards of 15-20k once it reaches the end purchaser.

Men and women like Stewart and Bonnie that see and have passionate values for flora and fauna like so few of us are the ones that save the world. Bonnie your are a hero as well and so are the indigenous people that changed their trapping history to ecotourism which the best way to earn funds for your personal needs. I can't wait to visit the south Pacific to see the birds. Captive breeding just like germination seeds or rare plants is key to saving all species from the Homo terra-vorus- Earth Eaters amongst us.

Thanks! Researchers from the Indonesian Parrot Project installed wide plastic sheets around the bottom part of the tree trunks during the nesting season. This method has proven to stop some predators like snakes climbing up onto the nest trees.

I have a 40 year old mulaccan cockatoo. I got him from my sister that passed away and she got him from a friend of hers who was very abusive to the bird. I have had the bird only 3 months now and he is finally letting me rub the side of his neck only. He is so sweet and gentle and I love him so much. Thanks for the video. I was looking to see how i can care for the bird and give him all the love he needs to be happy. I feel like he is lonely. Do you think if I buy a little budgie parakeet to keep him company is a good idea since i work a lot ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work. Thank you all.

Javier, most important thing is keeping the enclosure and the birds perching water and food bowls extra clean. varied fresh foods that are good for the species you have. The more you vary and offer new thing the more vary their diet will become making the healthier. Enclosure size is critical that any bird has adequate room too fly for exercise. Avian vet visit is a great idea to get blood work done in order to know the health or nutrient deficiency that may be present. Have the vet clip some flight feather some you can take your adopted bird outside under supervision. Take this slow not to frighten the bird. They generally are not really accepting of sudden changes so every change needs time for them to warm up to different exposure to new surrounds and people and other pets. Hope the helps. They are wonderful companions us they trust you. If it does not work out consider offering your Cockatoo to a responsible breeder that hell produce chicks as pets responsible so more more are adults trapped or babies stolen from the parents.

Most of the Cockatoos & Lori’s etc aren’t caught by criminals, they’re caught by poor Papuans and Indonesians to make a living. I’ve been to places with over 100 Palm Cockatoos and they were all wild caught.

That is very true. However, the term “criminal” can be applied to anyone who has committed a crime, whether convicted for the offence or not. It is also true that in most cases this is not an organised crime but more like an opportunistic activity. There are plenty of videos on KZbin of people openly hunting or trapping baby animals for the wildlife pet trade in Indonesia and other areas of south east Asia. Also lots of video footage of people walking around through the various open markets selling wild caught animals.

The film says that the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) are native and abundant in Australia. That is a close relative and similar to the Yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea) that is indeed only native to Indonesia and Timor Leste.

Rather than instantly releasing it to the wild, have the ipp tried breeding or maybe artificial insemination before releasing these birds in the wild to further increase the population? And if it is have they been succesful in that regard?

Artificial insemination before release would do nothing, they breed in pairs, so if the bird has no partner, why would it lay an egg? As for breeding them before release, that's probably already happening.

The parrot pet trade should be banned everywhere. The parrots like orcas are far to intelligent & social to be bought & sold & kept as pets. They are difficult to care for & require huge amounts of time. They're like having a 3 yr old child permanently in need of your attention. Their lifespans are long & they have great difficulty bonding with other than one person. They have no business being kidnapped from their wild homes to be a pet for someone's pleasure.
