Keep in mind that allosaurus wasn't the largest theropod in its time, or possibly even the second largest. Both torvosaurus and saurophinax were larger predators that co-exist with it, though the ladder might be just a large allo. They probably all had their own niches in the environment, but that doesn't mean they never could have competed with each other, so the fact that allosaurus was more populated makes wonder what kind of edge it had on them.
@andrewcrowley6331 Жыл бұрын
According to recent research, Allosaurus was insanely aggressive and attacked practically everything it coexisted with, even including Torvosaurus. So it’s possible their success strategy was the same as animals like the Honey Badger or Wolverine: naturally evolved crackhead energy.

Fun fact:Allosaurus (/ˌæləˈsɔːrəs/)[2][3] is an extinct genus of large carnosaurian theropod dinosaur that lived 155 to 145 million years ago during the Late Jurassic period (Kimmeridgian to late Tithonian ages). The name "Allosaurus" means "different lizard", alluding to its unique (at the time of its discovery) concave vertebrae. It is derived from the Greek words ἄλλος (allos) ("different", "strange", or "other") and σαῦρος (sauros) ("lizard" or "reptile"). The first fossil remains that could definitively be ascribed to this genus were described in 1877 by famed paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh. As one of the first well-known theropod dinosaurs, it has long attracted attention outside of paleontological circles.

Something I heard once was that the way allosaurus was able to take down such large prey while having relatively weak jaw muscles was because they had incredibly strong neck muscles. What they’d do is slam down their jaws onto the prey, grapple them and finish them off
@IndominusRex-wc1ey Жыл бұрын
The whole "slam down their jaw" thing is false, Allosaurus would break its jaw if it tried to do that. While below average for its size, Allosaurus still had a very meaty bite and super serrated teeth
@the_monstah6378 Жыл бұрын
Another fun fact: since allosaurus didn’t have strong jaw muscles in comparison to other therapods of similar size, that meant it had other methods of killing prey. For example, Tyrannosaurus Rex and other Tyrannosaurs could deliver up to 4000 pounds of pressure with a single bite, so most of their prey was killed simply by crushing them. However, they couldn’t open their jaws very wide. Allosaurus on the other hand was almost like a snake, in the sense that it could open its jaw extremely wide. So scientists believe that a method of killing it would use was that it would open its jaw very wide and use its top jaw filled with razor sharp teeth to stab into the prey’s body. Almost like an axe wielding psycho you would see in a 90s horror movie.
@roscoegustav9693 Жыл бұрын
These guys also had incredible specialized neck muscles to compensate for the weak bite force. They would effectively open their large jaws and slam their top teeth onto their prey, gouging then open without the trouble of ripping and tearing

Allosaurus had the two dimensional vision of a horse. It's literally used as antipode to T.Rex, which stands for the peek in evolution of stereoscopic vision within tyrannosauroids.

I'm not sure why my algorithm is pushing a ton of Dino content my way, but I'm kinda enjoying the nostalgia kick of my days in elementary school when I thought dinosaurs were the absolute shizzle. I'd be in the library about two or three times a week checking out the maximum number of books I could all about dinosaurs. Eventually my fascination with pterodactyls lead me to slowly delve into books about airplanes. Went to college to work on planes and now I live in a fossil Hotspot in Colorado right by the Marshall-Cope dinosaur quarry from the 1800s and our city has a ton of dinosaur statues all around town to boot haha. Life has come full circle and I didn't really put it together until these shorts came along lmao.

I'm glad it has that pull back style of attack as its actual special feature. The axe jaw hypothesis was cool but I'm there's something more true to replace it.
