On my AAR sixPack I changed to stiffer springs on the secondary diaphragms and changed the cam on the linkage to open at latter part of the cycle. My T/A heads were fully ported and polished and had no bottom end power. By having the secondaries engage at the higher end of the RPM scale, the vacuum presure allowed a smoother progression, with no bogging down. I also enjoyed the benefit of 20 to 21 mpg on the highway. I was basically running a super efficient 318 down the road with a fully ported and polished Trans Am race engine waiting at the end of gas pedal travel.

I hope Tony gets into the tuning of the Idle Air Bleeds and Idle Fuel Restrictors. There was an article in the April 2018 Mopar Muscle Magazine called "Climbing the Hemi Mountain" by Tom Gipe. www.zinio.com/articlepaywall This was by far the best article I've read on tuning a Holley carb. Granted this was for a Dual Quad Hemi set up... but it easily translates to a Six Pack. Using that article, I was able to fix issues that started with the stupid blended fuel (Ethanol/ Gasoline) here in California that I was fighting for years. It's amazing with a little work how much my everyday drivability improved.

Those along with the Idle Air Restrictors are the two jet changes that really make a big difference in everyday driveablity.

Tony, I worked with an individual whom played with the diafram springs on the original carbs and he set them up to stage the secondary's so they would never bog out even cold, his set up made the front carb to open a few rpms lower than the rear carb, this made the car sound and feel all of the carbs open during a lead foot dump on the throttle, you heard the primary's go full, then the front secondary's open almost full then the rear opened, it sounded like your on a rocket going through its stages on launch plus you'd feel each carb open up as the car accelerated. I wish I could remember his tuning procedure but I haven't touched a 6 pack set up in almost 30 years and you lose it when you don't do it, but I think he'd use the softer springs in the front carb and the harder springs in the rear to get his tune to work and he did have a lot of very happy customers with his tunes (talk to Don at Ajax Automotive in Denver, Co for the mechanics name, I can't remember his name, he also did awesome Torqueflight trans rebuilds)

Enjoyed several "6 pack" vehicles over the years. My father bought a 68 c3 coupe 427/400 hp 3 two barrel 4 speed right off the showroom floor from Lamb Chevrolet, Prescott Az, 2 days after it came off the truck. Outrageously priced at $6,000. Lol. It worked fantastic. Until he got shipped overseas, (20 year Navy Chief) and it sat garaged for over a year. He did his best to prepare it, but was nothing but problems when he got back. I remember him telling me that 3 carburetors was 3 times more trouble than one! Lol. There's a lot of history with this car, and many fond memories. But, as you stated, when it was right, WOW!!!!

You took me back to the old days when I was a poor country boy tuning rich kids multiple carb set-up. I did two-4's, 3-ducks(of various types) and, even, Jag XKE set-ups. I had forgotten about the "kill bleed".....glad you brought it up. On the old Ford flatties they used to put on 2 little carbs on various types of manifolds....I thought the Navarro and early Vic Edelbrock, Sr manifolds were pretty darn good for the day. Stack them on a flathead with "Denver" heads and Jahns piston with a cam and the old engines came to life in terms of torque. Of all of the multiple carbs I like the Fords with mechanical pumps. If I was lazy, I liked the Mopar with the big diaphragms......thanks for the memories. Have you messed with the new 3-deuce fuel-injection pots yet? Keep the Faith, Tony

The four barrel Chryslers maybe didn't have as much potential but they delivered all they had right now. The six pack reminds me...back in the good ol' long ago....a buddy had a 340 Challenger that was somewhat overly peppy due to his tinkering. ( he had to screw the tires to the rim to keep them from just busting loose and the rim spinning while the tires sat still) Cruising around looking for a Corvette to kill (his favorite), he saw a Challenger in a car lot and stopped to take a look. 440 six pack. Guy was really proud of it and the race was his idea. My buddy asks to hear it run. He tried not to smile as he said ok. They ended up racing for pinks and he went home with two Challengers. He said he was actually surprised the guy followed through...much respect. One day he pulls up in front of my house in the 340....chokity chokity chokity..." Hey man I got it running pretty good, jump in" I'm expecting to go off somewhere and play. He just lights it up right there. The block I lived on was on a hill so we were facing uphill when we started. We went all the way around the block boiling smoke the whole time. Took about five minutes. As we get back around to my house...my dad is standing in the driveway. Oh shit! Yeah, you kind of didn't give me a chance to say anything.... "get the hell out that car boy, and don't you ever step foot in it again. And you...you better just drive on and don't come back." Oh did I mention this was when we were 16-18?

The way that you explain how to tune a 6 pack, sounds a lot like tuning for VTEC engagement on a Honda. Either you can have an aggressive kick when the switch to high cam happens, or a smooth change over since the VTEC change over is an on/off switch (for older Honda engines anyway). I prefer a smooth change over, which is why my friend's VTEC head swap in his Integra, I have VTEC engaging at 4,400 RPM, if I set it before there, some mid range torque is lost, and if I set it too far after that, the engagement is more of a kick as the head demands cross flow by at least 5,000 RPM (off VTEC, the cam profiles are set up to cause swirl in the charge for better toque and leaner burning at lower RPMs) and it caused the tires to chirp in second gear just going to VTEC.

I have a 65 Tri Power intake I want to put on my 65 GTO, the center carb base on the Tri Power manifolds, except for 66, are smaller than the ends, so they require that base plate for the carb. All the other Rochester 2 barrels have the same pattern as the ends. Makes it so much fun. Since I will be using regular 2v carbs I have had for years on the ends, its going to be mechanical secondary. No worries, my 455s don't bog unless the air valve on a Qjet has no tension, setting the idle/float level is the hard part due to very high vacuum. Its in the works for this winter, if I can get the center base. So we might be doing them at the same time. Not much carries over between the Holley and the Rochester, other than they are carbs, but it will be fun to watch you build the Ramcharger.

Uncle Tony, years ago I had a 76 Camaro I bought from a widow woman who knew nothing about it other than “it has an rare engine” is what she said.... it was fast, built for top end. Had a forged pistons, steel crank, double hump heads, 365hp cast iron with 2.02/1.60 valves, studs, guide plates and angled plugs... All that was my dream come true at the time! Hell on my first car my positive traction came from an abandoned burned out Trans am hull that was in the bottom of a revine! But my question was about it’s carburetor. It was a Holley, DOUBLE PUMPER (no vacuumed secondary) but what was different is it was a spread-bore holly double pumper! Looked just like a Rochester Quadra-jet. (In my Opp Quadra-jet the best street/strip carb ever made) great mileage cruising around but GOOBS of air when you open up the rears.. nothing sounds like one either when it’s kicking in. Loss of vacuum in the intake causes at the same time the passing gear to kick in (I know it really just downshifts but that’s what I grew up calling it was the passing gear) anyways . The 327 wasn’t original to the camaro but the heads block and crank were all numbers matching... Torquer 2 intake, but that spread bore holly was something I’ve never seen before or since... Ppl have even said I didn’t know what the hell I was talking about. I was young but I knew what the heck a double pump was. All you had to do was hit the throttle and the 4 streams of fuel from the boosters was the giveaway. Even though it looked like Rochester made it it said HOLLEY.. This was in 1992 when I bought it and it had been sitting 5 yrs prior.... Do you know whT the carb might have originally came on? Was it a MOPAR carb by chance? I know I’ve seen thermo quads on chevys. Thanks bud. By the way I really like your style and enjoy your uploads.

The only six pack setup I ever saw run in person was on a hot rod 57 chevy I think it had a 327, but it might have been something larger. During normal street driving it acted one way, pretty standard really hard to tell it even had a six pack. but when the guy to ready to race it, he did ... something under the hood with the carbs. They would then come on sequentially, as if he had three gears in one... if you get what I mean. In first it would have the regular then two more kicks in the pants you could hear as it went down the track. I think once he got into 3rd they stayed open, the sound change was mostly in first, and maybe second a bit... but that was like 50 or 60 years ago, memories fade or "improve" over time.
@generalgreivus4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like Pontiac tri power sequential linkage
@tootall55594 жыл бұрын
@@generalgreivus I really don't know what he had under that hood. He worked at his Dad's garage and probably had access to anything. Could have been a Chevy engine with a Pontiac carb setup. A lot of people don't know that at one time not all the engines in the GM lines were the same. I had a 350 in a 72 Pontiac that was different from the Chevy 350. That motor sucked. I put two engines in it myself, then sold the hulk to a local guy that could do his own mechanical work, he put 3 Pontiac 350's in it, eventually he changed the mounts or whatever to put a Chevy 350 in it and had no more problems. The last motor I had in it developed the strangest problem I'd ever seen. Somehow, something cut a groove in the head right between two cylinders. I couldn't find another head for it. I suppose it could have been welded up and machined back down, but I just didn't have the money at that time for all that. I'd wasted too much money on it already, I had fancy wheels and tires, a turbo exhaust, air shocks and a number of other things on it.

My dad rest his soul thought me all about the old ways, he always said that he really loved that setup, good mileage and power he claimed.

@@generalgreivus Well under normal circumstances it basically is running a two barrel. Only when you get on it does it come alive and scat. I've had four barrel setups that were similar, if I kept my foot out of it, but I have a hard time keeping my foot out of it. Worst thing I ever did for gas mileage was put on "turbo" mufflers. They are quiet at idle and normal driving, but when you open it up, they roar. I loved to hear it roar. I'd slip it into neutral and let it roar sometimes, just to mess with people and the cops. If they stopped me, the car is quiet. "Who me? Can't be this thing is quiet as it gets." I always wanted to have a car with a big rumble and exhaust cut outs. Oddly, there is a place in Utah that does a lot of them. I guess it's legal to install them there, but not legal to use em on the street. They came up with a one touch button to open or close em. They used to be cable operated, then they were electric, but you had to hold the button until they are fully open or closed.

He had an undying love of turbo mufflers aswell lol, I fixed up one of his old trucks had a quadra jet and turbo mufflers and much to the same effect. Loved that truck.

The channel is going in a good direction. First a slant 6 build. Then a 318 build. Now a 360 build. Tell me this wasnt by design !!! Lol. Your kickin ass uncle Tony. I cant wait for you to pile all that on top the 360. I just picked up a set of aluminum heads with titanium valves 7 angle grind, ported blah blah blah. I hear they came off a 1000hp 360 that was in a duster. I been throwing ideas around on detuning them to run on the street. I think a six pack set up would go well with these heads I got so, youve peaked my interest.

Super interesting to see, and hear how these setups work. As a teenager I was around these cars. I never had anything with a six pack, but I did have several Mopar vehicles, as well as a couple Chevell's, and a Firebird. I can't wait to see the 360 six pack come together.

My dad worked on cars all his life and passed away at 79. Please Tony, cut back or stop smoking. Because my dad's lungs were so bad that when he had a heart attack, the doctors could not do any surgery and dad suffered for weeks and then passed. Now I know people think that 79 is very old but when you're 79 one doesn't think that way. Let's just say that you (even though you're younger than me) remind me of my dad and I want you to hang around a while.

Thanks for a great 6 pack school. I built a 3-1 barrel progressive set up on my 55 chevrolet 235 6 cylinder. Used 3 intake manifolds. end ones were cut off flush and welded in plugs. then ends facing in left some nipple ends as well as on both sides of center when clamped to head center and outside manafold sections welded together.. outside carbs no accelerator pumps or idle jets. then a progressive linkage that ran on the center carb till half throttle. past half throttle the linkage was step up 1-2 ratio so the last half throttle on the center carb would open the outboard carbs 100 percent. did it work. Yes, It did not give any more top end as the cam was stock but acceleration was noticeably better. cost was really cheap.

The three Holley two-barrel carbs were originally designed for the 1967 Corvette 427 tri-power. Holley flow rates two barrel carbs differently than four barrel carbs, at a different vacuum level. Using the two barrel flow rating, the outboard carbs are rated at 500 cfm each and the center carb is rated at 350 cfm. Using the same flow rating vacuum as the Holley four carbs, the flow rating for the Six-Pack carbs works out to around 950-960 cfm for the three carbs together. The 440 Six-Pack intake system adds about 40 horsepower over the factory four barrel 440 Magnum. That's about as good as it gets with the Holley Street Dominator (best low rise intake), the Mopar Performance single plane intake and the Edelbrock Performer RPM. The 340 Six-Pack was more of a gimmick (especially with stock valve springs), but the 1971 Thermoquad setup did beat the 1970 AVS intake on the 340. The 340 and 383 AVS carbs were rated at 570 cfm and the 440 Magnum AVS was larger. The Six-Pack setup did make a strong, modern difference in power on the 440, especially with the Street Hemi valve springs. Chrysler did design a Six-Pack 400 engine for 1972, but with the low compression requirement and the Thermoquad carb available, it was scratched from production. Edelbrock made the low block B engine Six-Pack intake that was designed by Chrysler engineers for the 400, so that is a Chrysler designed intake that was sold by Edelbrock. There were a very small number of 1972 440 Six-pack cars made. These had the same high compression, forged pistons as the 1971 engines and may have all been Dodge Chargers. Something like 6 cars. 1973 was supposed to be the last year of the 440 with a steel crankshaft and a manual transmission, but at least one 1974 Dodge Charger got a 440 with a 4-speed factory installed and it had a steel crankshaft.

Dude! I've forgotten everything I knew about carbs until you brought back every horrible memory of the quadrajet, th AFB and the God forsaken 2 barrels they replaced. Looking back, I was in hot-rod heaven. All those goddam parts and vaccum secondaries with... (I'm gonna wet myself) color coded diaphragm spings!!! I usually went with the yellow since it matched the one I took out. You are a true savant when it comes to these things. Basically that vintage sixpack was just a quadrajet or AFB with "Kick-you-in-the-ass" secondaries. Love it! Still going with six downer Webers. Maybe try a 173 slanty configured like that?

40 plus years ago a friend of mine had a Duster with the 340 Six-Pack. We had just gone over to a guy I new and had gotten it tuned beautifully. On the way back to my house we had to go through this blind 4-way X intersection. This guy in a big rig blew the stop doing they figured at about 70. It hit the Duster at the dog house from the left side. All I remember was my head breaking the passenger side window. When I got my senses back I looked at my friend his hand pinned to the drivers door by the steering wheel. Nothing from the firewall forward was left. We had been going west and were now facing east. The impact had shattered the front of the Duster. Engine and transmission were eviscerated. The only panel that wasn't damaged was the deck lid. I remember we salvaged that, and speedo and the 3.91 posi pig. My friend had only had the car a week and had just paid his insurance that afternoon. We where lucky he came out with a busted finger, and me with a slight concussion. But it was a real kick in the ass for the last 10 miles before the wreck. );

That is gonna be cool man, looking forward to the build, the home-made six pack I bought from you worked pretty good, I changed the center carb to a 4412 500cfm center, and it helped a ton, did some fine tuning and that setup kicks ass on my 451 stroker in my 73 Satellite, and my 505 stroker going into my Jezebel Charger has 3 4412 500 CFM carbs I modified to work, and let me tell you what, those bastards work like no other. I also have an original set of Direct Connection carbs, with linkage and everything, along with a Mr. Norms air cleaner setup. If I knew you were gonna do this video, I would have sent you my Direct Connection carbs as a visual representation piece for the video.

Chevy 348 engines with the 3x2 setup was vacuum operated on the end carbs...when the center carb was opened over 50% throttle, the secondaries went full open...there was no modulation...either full on, or nothing...that's why the progressive linkage was used...it was much more driver friendly.

I love my six pack it has always worked great I bought the whole setup in 1987 used everything including even air cleaner 400 bucks my dad thought I paid to much I put it on a 68 roadrunner had to change the wiper motor to a 3 speed motor and it worked great. still does also the first time I stepped on it the motor mount ripped off and the pistol grip shifter smacked my knee hard

One of the Olds 371s I used to own was a 57 J2 in a 88 Holiday hdtp. That was the engine that dad used to teach me how to overhaul an engine. I remember filing compression and oil rings until I got the right gap, tedious job. He would not allow me to file back and forth but, I had to only make a forward swipe to keep from ruining the teeth of the file.
