The blonde bombshell, Jayne Mansfield was never shy with her sex appeal and she used it with full force for this legendary snap. Mansfield was constantly a subject of the tabloids with her turbulent love life and willingness to push boundaries that other stars feared to do at the time.
It was 1957 in beautiful Hollywood. An extravagant party where everyone who was anyone was attending. Sophia Loren was present at the party, garnering much attention. That was until Jayne Mansfield entered the event like a force of nature. She claimed every eye in the room with her revealing, backless, satin dress, giving a good show of her cleavage. She knew every eye was on her and she loved every second of the attention.
Taken over 60 years ago, the photograph still turns heads and has people talking about it today. The image was an international sensation with many people wondering if the Italian, Academy Award winning actress, Sophia Loren was not-so-secretly jealous of Mansfield’s looks and success. The famous photo only garnered more attention after the tragic death of Jayne Mansfield, who was killed in a freak car accident in 1967.
This ended the seemingly heated rivalry between the two Hollywood stars, if there ever was a rivalry to speak of. But what is the true story behind this legendary photograph? Was Mansfield trying her best to steal Loren’s thunder? Was this image just a split-second glance from Loren, that’s been blown out of proportion? Or was this truly the beginnings of a heated Hollywood rivalry?
Join us as we take a deeper dive and finally explain the true story behind the infamous Jayne Mansfield and Sophia Loren photograph.

What Jane did was utterly tacky, unclassy, and shows her true personality. It wasn't innovative to pull something like this, it was trashy. It was a party for Miss Loren, and Jane shows up acting like a complete control freak. Taking the attention away for whom it was meant for. Loren had already proved herself as an actress. Her beauty is beyond compare. She was flawless. She has aged well, and had more class than Mansfield could have ever hoped to have had. Her credits identify her as well rounded person. She didn't sleep around, or try to intimidate other women. She was above pettiness. Jane could have taken a few lessons. Side note: Jane wasn't the first female to be nude o. The big screen, It was Heady Lamar, in an old B/W film. She was running through a jungle and I think the movie was Tarzan.

@@janeaparis I Agree Wtih You. Sophia Loren Was "Not Jealous" I think she was shocked. This Was Hollywood For Gosh Sakes !!!!!! Sophia Loren said she didn't care for Hollywood. Remember Sophia was from Europe. They had a different attitude there !!!!!! They Made movie Sure !!!! that would show partial nudity even in those days !!!!!!!!! Actresses or extras in films with harem girls or slave girls would appear partially nu. Sophia appeared in one as a actress starting out. But what I'm getting at. At A social setting such as a party or a restaurant. This would be considered vulgar. Nooo Proprietary What So Ever !!!!!!!!y Nothing against Jane Mansfield. But People forget she was an hollywood actress. She was intelligent. But she had a calculated plan or agenda to "Show An Image" To Get Noticed As A Sex Symbol In Hollywood.

A couple of months before her death Jayne Mansfield came to Vietnam. I mostly recall that the tropical sunlight and heat was taking it’s toll on her and her milk-white complexion was turning decidedly pink. In the US the style of 50s-70s bombshells had slightly airheaded on screen characters and pinup photos like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield did it. While in Europe there was also pinup the focus was more on stylish femme fatale characters like Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot - they had a bit of edge. Perhaps the difference is kind of underlined in this photo.

A late friend of mine was Roy Gerow, Jayne's personal/family photographer not related to Hollywood/her career in any way. I have several one-of -a kind or near so photos of her, family, with actor Jeff Chandler, with dogs in her "pink pallace" bedroom and many others taken 1958 to 1966. Most have her signature on the reverse and/or handwriting. Roy and wife never had children and I have all taken of her by him. She adored Roy who never took advantage of his/her status. Fantastic photos and all never published. Roy Gerow always respected her/family and NEVER betrayed her in publishing these on his own. I have always adored her even though I was only 10 years old when she was killed.

A publicity stunt that cheapened Mansfield and followed Loren all her life. How tedious it must have been for Loren... who was and IS an otherworldly beauty. Exotic and natural and just truly amazing. No disrespect to Mansfield, but no one could duplicate Marilyn Monroe. One of my favourite old Hollywood pics is of Marilyn photographed from above in a roomful of men. She glows. The men are a sea of hats and grey suits. She glows like the sun as they seem to orbit around her.

It was not a wardrobe malfunction, only the nipple-line was seen. There are retouched photos that show nipples. Sophia was told carefully only looking straight in the direction of the photographers, not showing her profile because having quite a large nose. It was two days before Jayne's 24th birthday. Jayne was afraid of getting old, while Sophia was a little younger than she was. Now or never. This picture was a big scandal in Hollywood at that time. Together with box office flops, it showcases her fall from grace. On the other hand, it became her only enduring fame. Until the internet, Jayne was all but forgotten. Marilyn, as the winner, took it all. Mamie van Doren said, quoting Jayne in 1967: Maybe Mamie, Marilyn was lucky.

The back story is that Mansfield became tenacious at self promotion and an almost kamakaze stunt puller, however what few people know was that she came from a comfortably well off family and inherited quite a bit of money from relatives some who move in prominent in political circles. She had a MENSA level IQ was cultured , very well read and articulate. She had attended University and acquired classical training in piano and violin, in addition to English, she spoke four other languages French, Spanish, Italian and German. If her talent for acting comparable to Loren or Monroe can be a subject of debate, but based purely on education and intellect I think you would be hard pressed to deny she may just have surpassed them. Jayne being very far from a dumb blond had arrived at the conclusion early on that her looks and stunning voluptuousness specifically her large breasts were almost assuredly going to keep her from being seen as a serious actress, Jayne herself knew this and commented on it . At that time there were plethora of actresses all vying to ne the next Marilyn and Jayne unlike Marilyn had children to feed so she decided to find another way to market herself and molded herself into the over the top bombshell that people seemed to find Entertaining. it was pretty amazing bit of work. She actually created her own niche and then filled it magnificently, which was a fairly brilliant marketing strategy, for someone with no experience in the field. Sadly though, her lack of knowledge and experience caught up with her and her stunts went from publicity to notoriety as her career began to decline due to Hollywood's shifting away from the curvaceous actresses to the gamin waifs like Hepburn, and Caron. As for the historic side eye event:, Mansfield was famous for her minor or major wardrobe malfunctions and Loren would have been fully aware of that given Jayne' penchant for creating publicity stunts so I imagine that side eye was more of a rather leery 'oh hell what's coming next' more than anything else. I believe Loren when she says she was more worried than anything else about Jayne spilling out onto the table because it wasn't at all unknown for her very thin straps to break. I don't think there was any jealousy at all because both women had blazed their own paths to get where they wanted to be with each having very different personas so that the types of roles they played really didn't overlap and so were no real competition to each other.. Was Loren the more talented actress, of the two, we'll never know , but unlike Loren and Monroe, Mansfield actually came to Hollywood from the New York stage .She received a Theatre World Award (Promising Personality) for her performance in 1956,[86] as well as a Golden Globe Award (New Star of the year, Actress) in 1957. She performed in about 450 shows between 1955 and 1956.[90] At the time, she was considered one of the biggest Broadway-to-Hollywood success stories. I say we'll never know because the powers that be had made the unfathomable decision to take her promising talent and firmly pigeonhole Jayne, quite ruthlessly exploiting her by forcing her into formulaic roles in poor quality flims that soon grew stale and repetitive, which was one of the reasons Jayne kept an almost frenetic pace of personal appearances and creating outrageous copy for the gossip magazines. I personally think she could have been an outstanding actress because you can see flashes of serious comedic brilliance in some of her work, the sad fact is if she had kept being offered parts in films of the caliber of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter she may have gone on to a firmly respected place right along side of Loren. Finally Jayne Mansfield for all the things that brought to bear to limit her and hold her down went on to become an icon when many of the "best Marilyns' have faded into obscurity and that's no mean feat.
@Kaboomboo
@Kaboomboo 2 жыл бұрын
Very well said. Yes she did have well off relatives. She was brought up in the affluent Highland Park in Dallas. Her grandfather left her quite a sum of inheritance she used to buy her mansion (I think equivalent to 750k in today's money). But she wasn't a very stellar instrument player. She was about on par with a junior high student that practiced for shows rather than played well. As far as her acting is concerned she was capable of good stuff, but never great. That was due in no small part with the fact that she turned down numerous roles because of her pregnancies. Then Fox just found it easier to make money loaning her out to cheap movies. Her performance in Single Room Furnished, her dramatic acting vehicle, didn't seem to really wow anyone. And Ann B. Davis (Alice in the Brady Bunch) worked with her on a play in the mid 60s and said she was terrible in a dramatic role and at that time she was getting super drunk daily and having loud, violent arguments with her boyfriend while her husband and children were present. I think her problem was lack of self control. Couldn't keep away from the booze and couldn't keep her boobs in her top. Personally I don't think her comedic timing was that good either. She was mostly just a good looking lady with big boobs. Hardly a genius, hardly a concert performer, and hardly an actress. That's why her legacy is mostly limited to Hollywood sex symbol enthusiasts and people curious about Mariska's mother.

Why was she always broke according to ppl who knew her? If she had all of this access to money, she surely wouldn't have had to stoop to playing gigs in off road taverns. I've heard it said she didn't like to work. She was all about showing off her body. So If that makes her intelligent there should be a lot Apologies made to 60 years of Playmates. She posed nude for Playboy how many times? It was looked down on in society as far as I remember. I don't care how much book smart a person has, it's the integrity of their character that's more important. I read once her last husband beat on her, as well as her children and known to say hit her hard like you do me. I give Sophia more credit because she worked hard and earned the title Movie Star. Marilyn Monroe was by far more sweet until she got involved with the Kennedy men. A mistake that cost her, her life. Everyone knew Jane was trying to be MM. It failed. That's why her movie career ended. It got old quick, and she wasn't bringing in the cash flow MM had. MM came from humble beginnings. She was mistreated by the film Industry. I think Jane loved sleeping around. She is known to have slept with some of the same men as MM. It's sad how she died, and it's unfortunate, but like I said, you shouldn't think higher of yourself than you are. It's sad to think that the only thing ppl remember you by is your death and how you died. There's still debating controversy as to MM death, but as grown adults who can critically put things together, know the truth about her death.

@@janetduncan87 Oh my goodness there is so much misinformation in your post that it would require a page and half to set right, but I don't really think you are asking any questions about Mansfield as you've already made some kind or highly prejudicial moral judgment about her. Although I think your excusing MM while condemning Mansfield for doing exactly the same things is rather hypocritical. They both slept with many men, however you THINK Mansfield “loved sleeping around” but somehow KNOW MM didn't. They both posed nude many times including for playboy, but somehow it makes Mansfield cheap and sleazy while Monroe was simply sweet and mistreated. The one thing MM didn't have to do in her pursuit of fame and stardom is support a small child while doing so. As for this ludicrous notion that you HEARD about her not liking to work ( heard from whom because I've never heard any such thing), although maybe you should go and research her bio and see a body of work which shows that she actually worked her ass off to support herself and her children. She didn't just show her body off she acted in on stage on BROADWAY for which she won a Golden globe, in films, on TV, sang for Movie Soundtracks and records and did nightclub and cabaret acts. She did all those things because she had to support a family and didn't have the luxury of a rich Johnny Hyde to steer her career and provide for her like MM and you question her INTEGRITY? FYI: She didn't want to BE the next Marilyn the studios dictated that she would be promoted that way and pigeonholed her in the same ditsy blond roles as they had done to MM and blocked any roles that didn't fit that image the same as they did Jeanne Carmen, Martine Carol, Anita Ekberg and Diana Dors to name just a few. All were touted as the new Marilyn and several posed for playboy just as Marilyn did and also had problematic affairs and very troubled lives. The reason pushing all these women to be MM clones got OLD is because the studios ran it into the ground not because any of these women wanted it that way and that included Mansfield. However it might interest you to know that when Marilyn first came on the scene she was touted as the new JEAN HARLOW. Then we have Loren, she also did a few nude scenes in the beginning, but the one thing she had that neither MM or Mansfield had early in their lives and careers was a CARLO PONTI smoothing and paving the way for their careers which takes nothing away from her immense talent it just means she didn't have the same kind of struggles. You need to check your facts because Jayne Mansfield went on to become a cultural icon in her own right and isn't ONLY remembered because of the way she died. I find it interesting how viciously you deride Mansfield while making no moral judgments regarding Marilyn Monroe although both women made many of the same choices in their lives and careers. Both women struggled for their place in the entertainment industry by any means necessary and both led lives filled with questionable choices, substance abuse and men who used and abused them and both women's lives ended tragically, but they still deserve respect for how hard they tried to realize their dreams. And who the hell are you to condescendingly decide how highly anyone should think of themselves, what a snotty thing to say. I won't be replying to anything you have to say because quite frankly your self-righteously judgmental situational ethics and selective moral umbrage rather disgust me.

@@Kaboomboo Oh gracious you seem to know far more about her lack of talent then the critics of her day did. That Golden Globe she won in 1957 as New Star of the Year for a DRAMATIC role in the Wayward Bus for which she beat out Carroll Baker and Natalie Wood for her performance as a "wistful derelict" should have been given back, because if course Anne B Davis is the last word on her acting ability although by that time Mansfield's live was in a death spiral. However, by all means let's dismiss her entirely based on the authoritative opinion of Davis, that and the fact that apparently you knew the woman personally. FYI It wasn't easier to put her in dumb blond roles, it was the marketing strategy for every studio at that time research Jeanne Carmen, Martine Carol, Anita Ekberg , Diana Dors. Mamie Van Doran Sheree North, Kim Novak, Joi Lansing, Beverly Michaels, Barbara Nichols and Greta Thyssen just a few, ALL pigeonholed in exactly the same way. Fox particularly honed in on Mansfield in this kind of promotion as a means to try and force Monroe back to work to fulfill her contract. If all she was was a pair of boobs that filled a dress well then what explains her remaining an enduring cultural icon in her own right still well known to people that never saw her on the stage or screen at the time of her initial fame. A lot of women with extraordinary bodies have come and fallen by the wayside with no one remembering their names a few of which are listed above.
@Kaboomboo
@Kaboomboo 2 жыл бұрын
@@lucretciaseven4873 There is nothing extraordinary or enduring about her legacy other than the success of her daughter. And this stunt she pulled at Sophia Loren's party. Seriously, it was Sophia's party and she was photobombing all of her pictures. No wonder the studio was fed up with her. They invested a lot of money bringing Sophia to the U.S. just to have another starlet make it all about her and turning it into a borderline boob show. No wonder the studio was fed up. And you can blame the studio all you want, but at the end of the day, Jayne pigeonholed herself too in the sexy blonde role and didn't help matters that when she went out in public, her clothes would burst open. She was dropped by a major designer label because the clothes she wore by them kept "accidentally" falling off which was making the label look cheap and unreliable. Jayne had a contract with Fox through 1962, the same year Monroe died, and they decided not to renew it. By that time, Jayne was already shipped off to Europe so her role of bringing Monroe back was irrelevant. If you're going to bank on Jayne's "dramatic" prowess on ONE performance in a movie, and not the string of other terrible movies and roles she's done, to say she was a "great" actress, that's on you. It shouldn't make a difference if your life is in a bad place. If you're a good actor, then you should be able to act well no matter where you career is. As far as your list of blondes that "aren't remembered" go, Anita Ekberg was in the masterpiece _La Doce Vita_ and is by no means forgotten. Kim Novak is an icon herself due to her roles in the Hitchcock films. Mamie Van Doren herself at least wasn't deluded into thinking she'd be taken seriously like Elizabeth Taylor or Katherine Hepburn and didn't try jumping for the dramatic actress role. And she's doing well enough for herself even to this day in her 90s.

I am in my mid 60's, and I have enjoyed that particular picture for literally decades, I am aware that many people regard that photo as distasteful on Jane's behave, but what people don't understand is Jane was actually picking up where Marilyn Monroe left off, MM had already passed by then and Jane was simply filling in the void as the Blonde bombshall, as far as the two beauties go, in my eyes, Jane might have token the night, but Sophia was/is an international icon in own right, when she arrived in this country she had already made a name for herself in her native country, she came to the US not speaking English, and she went on to win numerous awards, which proved she was not only eye candy, but was loaded with talent too, bottom line in my eyes, between Blondes & Burnettes, its a matter of personal preference, I have always regarded Sophia Loren as my personal favorite for years, and she was no stranger to publicity stunts herself, she took her first topless photo in Italy in 1955, and she caused quite a sensation in her own right.

Mansfield was blessed with those mammaries, smart, confident ,and she could get the attention ,or steal it. Sophia came from modest upbringings in WW2 era . She was able to commandeer a $1.000,000 salary for TRAFOTRE in 1964! not too shabby ! Jayne typical brash,loud and ambitious American Fleshy mammalian flesh woman . Carlo Ponti the ''sugar daddy '' and older mentor was Sophia's grace. Jayne was from self-made stuff. I think Sophia had nothing to be ashamed of, she had a 36-24-36 buon figura ,and many talents not just being gorgeous . Only been one Sophia !. Jayne had a carbon-copy version in the 80's with Anna Nicole Smith ..America creates models. Italy they are born there. :)

Loren had more class than Mansfield who was already treading on Monroe's toes by doing imitation pictures( far inferior) to hers: let's not forget Mansfield couldn't act to save her life. Loren lasted and showed in film after film she knew you shouldn't do the naked pictures, but let your acting to the work. She also was shrewd with men and didn't jump into bed with any hunky-dory but saved herself for real marriage and having children. She had it all.
