The inner workings of a safe combination/dial lock

This is a Sargent & Greenleaf dial lock. It's not the most modern or sophisticated one you'll see (these are used for teaching safecracking), but it's what you might find at a jewelry store that hasn't bought a new safe in fifteen years.

thank you very much sir , my brother received a safe from somebody that was open but he had forgotten the code , and my brother wanted to throw it away i told him i would take it and after finding your video i opened up that baby's back door and played with the wheels until noticing the pattern and noting the code down :D now i have a working code with a combination i know... i wish i could change the combination thou : ohh and it was a 4 wheel lock :D hehe i thank you very very much sir

Thx for the video i had an idea that would make packages not get stolen my idea was to make a thing that has the aamw mechanism as the vault ao the delivery person just put the combination to open it.

what I don`t get is, when the first wheel is in position for the fence and you start rotating the opposite way to pick up the 3.rd and 2.nd wheel..why does the 1.st wheel stop spinning along, especially at the final stage when you are again rotating the wheel the same direction as you started at.

+CHARLES BRONSON i removed the panel in the back of the door, and then turned the wheel all the way right a few times and then u turn it right until the first gap aligns with the bar , then u go opposite side turning the wheel and u have to notice how many times and which number until the gap comes in alignment with the bar again, and repeat in the other direction now :) hope it helped ... the video sure did help me

Can it be breach with x-ray machine showing position of the whells?

Since you are "looking" through thick steel, the emitter must be gamma rays - not x-rays. Trying to detect notches in (I assume) thin aluminum alloy discs after gamma rays pass through thick steel; the notches may not be visible. Sorry.

Changing the combination would require removing the disc packs and repositioning the pins that act between disc packs.

That changes _all_ the digits of the combination, but *the relationship between all three is still related.* For better security, you may exchange dials between boxes, but don't install them flipped around or trade positions in the installation sequence!

When I changed mine, I left off the cover and noted when the indicators on the moving dial reached top dead center. Then I looked at the front of the dial and noted the position, wrote it down. You can also look from below, but the gap in the cams are wide and hard to tell when aligned with the latch tooth. Then I operated the lock until I could open it successfully three times in-a-row. Replaced the cover. *Then I finally closed the door.*

I created a tool for the new post office employees, so they could easily pop open the doors from the (always open) back side. Then they could remove the covers and discover the combinations, updating their records and modifying combinations for new customers.
