Wet reef rock can also come from another fish tank. That's typically what you get from the pet store.

Back when I started this hobby (20 years ago) they used to cure live rock by actually boiling it in hot water to kill off whatever it had. Downside to that was that it actually killed rock and had to be start all over again with the cycle. Didn’t have all that nice looking coralline

This is actually a really bad idea. Poly toxin can be released into the air and make you and you family very sick and could even kill you and your pets. Dogs cats and people. Don't do this

Can we safely use lava rock in a reef tank?

A lot of talk on this but one area hardly touched on is ORP. This a complex measurement of ratio between Oxygenation vs Organics. The ocean averages around 350 but when you talk reef with the waves crashing on the rocks the oxygenation goes way up obviously in those ever changing peaks. For healthy live rock would recommend 350 to 400 all the time as much as possible(imho). Also for many years have seen the difference if disease breaks out in a tank and how outstanding this makes a healthier quicker recovery for the livestock. I maintain between 405 and 420 all the time and use nothing out of the ordinary at all. No ozone etc. In a 180 reef with some very mature and large fish have had for over 15 years.

I'm just getting into this. All you are talking about is limestone. But you rename it and charge 2000% the price. Nope.
