LIVE Rock or DRY Rock WHAT'S BEST? Easy Beginners Guide for Reef Aquarium
What is aquarium wet live rock and dry live rock used for?
Aquascaping the reef aquarium & primary biological filtration, most of the beneficial bacteria will live in the holes of the live rock.
Where does wet live rock and dry live rock come from?
Wet Live rock and dry live rock comes from the ocean and is dried out or is mined from the ground, whereas man made rock is manufactured.
What are the pros and cons to wet live rock or dry live rock?
Wet Live rock comes with bacteria and beneficial organisms, brittle stars etc, coralline algae or macro algae but also PESTS.
Dry live rock is completely LIFELESS but will become live rock over time. Dry rock has no bacteria or beneficial organisms but also no pests.
Manufactured dry live rock is made from man made aggregates and comes in shapes designed for aquascaping arka, aqua one, eco reef are some examples of companies which make this type of rock. Some types of manufactured rock is plain white whereas others are either dyed or sprayed.
Which type of rock you use is not cut and dry you can mix wet live rock and dry live rock as a cost saver using dry as base and wet live rock over top. Depends on your way of reefing, if you like super clean aquarium or prefer to create a tank with natural biodiversity.

As a new Reefer in the process of selecting the base rock to be cured for my first salt water tank, I have delved into dozens of available KZbin video on the subject, read dozens of articles, and several books before diving into my first purchases. Video's like this are an excellent resource, thank you. My very first experience in this hobby is an example of why to get dry rock: the first location I purchased from offered several selection, so I opted for mined dry rock for the majority of the tank, and selected a single large cured live rock to "seed" the tank and to see if it was a potential risk as many suggest. I observed the rock for 3 days in my empty tank with only salt water and a power head. Within 3 days I found Aiptasia, an Asterina starfish, and a small species of feather duster. Yep, the very first rock in my system brought Aiptasia; 4 of them. Now I have to clean the system and treat the live rock (likely killing it and wasting the investment in beneficial organisms). If you're just getting into this like me, take the advice of veteran Reefers about live rock as a potential for numerous pest. This is a long-term hobby. Just exercise patience and wait for a longer cycle, get dry or manufactured rock.

At my LFS the live wet rock is only $1 more per pound. But I think it's rock that was dried and put into water to start the cycle. It's actually really nice because there are no pests.

Nice video! When I set up my tank I used dry rock. I did have to cure it first bcuz even though the organisms and bacteria had died off, they still break down into ammonia. So both live and dry rock require curing.

I started with dry rock and dry substrate on my very first saltwater aquarium and really regret it. It's been two years of trying to get biodiverisy to take hold and just ending up with dinoflagellates taking over with nothing to outcompete it. If you start with a totally dead system, be prepared to wait years with a brown tank until it slowly matures unless you have a way to seed it with a diversity of life. Maybe others have had more success with dead rock, but my experience had been disappointing.

Excellent explanation , very detailed and helpful. I still have a question regarding polyresin replica rock, such as branch Tonga... which as you know the genuine skeleton is almost unobtainable. Do you know if aquarium polyresin becomes bioactive at all? Would live coral actually encrust over or make a polyresin structure a foothold or home? I have found the dry replica branching rock, difficult to work with! Thanks.

i was thinking either going with carib sea liferock or marco rock from BRS... what do you suggest for a 15g build ? do you like the real lie rock from live rocknreef? i love them jus very worried about pests

Absolutley love your video and love your channel. Was just wondering about something and hoping you could help me :) 1. On live rock, there is nitrifying beneficial bacteria (BB) and coraline algae (CA) right? Of course there are loads more but these are the main things? 2. The BB breaks down ammonia and nitrites and the CA consumes the nitrates? 3. Also, that natural purplish, green and pink colour comes from the CA, not the BB right? 4. how do i keep the BB and CA alive? What do they both need specifically? Do they need special lighting or simply ammonia? Or a bit of both? Thanks so much

Hi the coraline isn't what uses nitrates its BB, look up the nitrogen cycle and you will see how it works. Generally in a saltwater environment, even with no fish there will be enough nutrition to keep both alive. For the coraline algae you will need water condions suitable for hard corals and also a reef spectrum light

Will be setting up my first reef tank this month. The aquarium where I am going uses live rock and it is what they use in all of there reef tanks etc and they also sell it! If I bought it from them what are the chances of having 'bad' bacteria/hitchhiker's?

I had a 300ltr reef tank but due to health reasons I have had to shut it down and I am going to set up a Fluval Sea Evo, the problem I have is that I have kept some rock from my old tank in a bucket with some sand, a heater and an air stone connected to a mini pump just to keep the water moving, but, I have high nitrates in the water and despite doing water changes the water still has high nitrates. Any suggestions as to what is going on or has the rocks died?

If you have nitrates it means the rock is alive still but I guess some stuff has died off

Iv started with live rocks. The aquarium have been active for 6-7 years. My luck = no single sickness or pest attacked clowns. The bad = worms and Aiptasia have taken over. Hate it.. planning to start a new aquarium with dry rocks. But I will use my old rocks in A canister filter with fine filter + uvc. to keep the bad stuff outside.
