The triple CAT 657was still smaller and less powerful that the Letourneau LT360 which still holds the record for the world's largest motor scraper. It had a capacity of 216 Cubic yds and over 5 thousand horsepower compared to the Triple CAT with 150 Cubic yards and 2580 horsepower. It was claimed that the LT360 could self load 360 tons (792 thousand pounds) in 80 seconds Letourneo had an even bigger one on the drawing board bosting over 10 thousand horsepower

The first Deere crawlers were kits made by the Lindeman Bros. in Yakima, Wa. installed on a B. Some custom units built from other attempts on GPs and Ds also existed. Deere and Caterpillar had a very good relationship. They exchanged combines and allowed some patent copying in the late 19th and early 20th century. Deere helped Cat eith hydraulics. The first Deere diesel combustion chambers were strikingly similar to Cat. Fast forward to the first Industrial forays of Deere. They were hardly a blip on Caterpillar's blotter. But they gad their place. Today is a bit different. Deere does their own thing until you get to Dozers. Cat does as well until you get to Backhoes and Skidsteers. JCB provided the backhoes, ASV the skid steers. Lately they have their own identities but the influence is still strong. Cat bought Perkins to gain not only their power platform size but their successful emmissions systems. I don't think Deere is trying to crowd Caterpillar out but rather provide a niche need. Deere dozers are pretty amazing with the Hydrostatic drive and zero turn ability. The Diff Steer on Cat coupled with High Tracks are very impressive as well. I've run both machine types from 15-20 years ago and say I have no real preference. When it comes to the cab and the offset seat, I like the Cat. For finish work, the Deere is pretty nimble. I think it comes down to preference and dealer support.
