Holy cow. What a ride for Groundhog. From having the weakest starting settlements, to having long road and the prospect of more sheep/monopoly, to being cut off, to a steal and a pull away from winning, to losing road, to luckily not being monopoly’d or losing army, and a few nice dice rolls and no seven to seal the game. GG. i enjoyed the whole video. it's so interesting how we assumed dylighted had a 4th knight from groundhog's POV, and the fact that he didn't have it gave groundhog an entire other round to stay alive. then, dylighted was hoping that ian had a monopoly card, and the fact that ian didn't also kept groundhog alive. and in the end, groundhog won because of some nice luck with the rolls that got him tons of wood and sheep, almost as if to balance out all the robberies that he was getting just before.
@DyLightedCatan4 жыл бұрын
Well said! I was fairly certain Ian had a monopoly card since he had so many unplayed dev cards, but unfortunately he didn’t. I think I needed to speak out more in the game telling the other 2 players I had 2 year of plenties and I needed another knight badly.

Great game groundhog. To try and go for the win early on, I wonder if he could have extorted a trade from hawkeye for that wheat instead of dylighted, then he could steal from dylighted with a 2/3 chance to get a wheat with his knight! Can't believe he still got the win though that was crazy haha
@DyLightedCatan4 жыл бұрын
Good thought! I think that probably wouldn’t work since Hawkeye only had 1 wheat and he’d be less hesitant and giving it up when he has 5 cards. Worth a shot but I think it’s unlikely.

So curious about your thoughts. If I was Hawkeye, I think I actually would have traded the ore to get my sheep back, giving the city to Groundhog. My thought process being that giving him the early production will ensure that knights get placed onto Groundhog for a good chunk of the early game by opposing players. And since Hawkeye doesn't share any tiles with Groundhog, it will guarantee that his spots remain open, especially that vital 5 wheat. So not only would Hawkeye get his rare sheep back, but it also limits his spots being blocked in the early game. And you wouldn't really need to worry about Groundhog being able to move the knight since he only has 2 points of wheat and the 6 ore would be constantly getting blocked. This is something I've done in casual play before, trading that city or great third settlement spot to someone that doesn't share any good tiles with myself to force the robber away from me. But I've never really seen it talked about before in higher level play. Obviously it doesn't always make sense, such as attempting it with a pure OWS player since they could just constantly move the knight off of themselves. But in this case, I think it would have been a good play by Hawkeye.
@DyLightedCatan4 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting idea, but the rare sheep doesn’t come at too big of a cost since you’re going to get a lot of sheep trades from red. I’ll have to think more about giving free cities away. Typically I don’t like it, but there are certain circumstances where it’s a fine play to do so.

04:00 wouldnt the 11 wheat + 6 stone + desert make more sense für grey? He would have the best stone setup in the game and an additional wheat source in case his 5 gets blocked. Also the 6 stone will then be used by three players and only blue would block it. He could then extend his road to the bottom 10/9 sheep port since nobody build there. (Or only the 10 sheep port if blue decides to race him.) He would then have best stone, and also good sheep and wheat for a city/dev card win.

Pause... I would port for a wheat and save for a city... He's already ahead in the army race, and falling behind in production... It's also fairly safe to port for a rare wheat because he's behind in the game and unlikely to be stolen from between turns... He also has the option to go for longest road, since he has the best wood/brick combo of anyone in the game and room to expand on the bottom of the island... Upgrading first his 6-11-12 and then his 5-9-10 will really help the production needed to take and maintain longest road... It might be kind've unrealistic, given the other player's ore-wheat-sheep production, to expect to be able to secure and maintain army in this game, and upgrading to cities and switching to a road strategy might be his best bet to win anyways... Unpause...
@Catanimal7204 жыл бұрын
But I guess after watching the rest of the video what he did worked too lol... If no one else pulls enough knights I guess you can hang on to army long enough to win... Well played Groundhog...

Haha, was wondering where you went. What type of poker were you playing? Just starting with something like 25 to 50nl 6-max?
@DyLightedCatan4 жыл бұрын
I played 5NL and moved up to 25NL online. I specifically study 6-Max. I eventually found a club with a few whales that consistently played 50NL and it’s been quite profitable playing against them and it motivated me to study harder to win more.

you can play a knight card after trading? at home we don't allow that since asking for trades gives you information about players cards.

Green needs 2 more points because he has largest army; he needs either 2 cities or city + settlement. He has 4 ore 1 sheep 1 wheat 1 wood; so 2 cities would cost 2 more ore and 3 more wheat, also he could use the sheep to port if he gets one more but it seems hard. A lot of ore and wheat has been gathered tho last couple of dice rolls. However, for a settlement and a city he still needs 2 wheat and a brick. This might be doable tho, he can trade away an ore for wheat, steal another wheat but idk how he gets the brick?... also he might just get a city and pop a dev card to get +1vp?..., then he would only need 2 wheat which seems more doable being able to steal wheat and trade a wood for the other one with red Who has no wood... plus he can threathen with knight

Hey Dylighted, with the potential 4 point turn at about 18:00, wouldn't it have been technically smarter to go back on the 'non-binding' promise to not block the red player, because you have a 1/3 chance of getting the 3rd wheat we need, rather than a 1/5 chance from blue? I know its a little bit dishonest, but perhaps it could be justified to go against your word since it is non-binding if you have a chance of getting the win through the action. Would you see this as justifiable? Or does it just damage your player credibility too much for making deals in the future? I mean, if this game was hypothetically the world catan championships, you might want to consider taking the 1/3 odds since its technically within the rules to do so.
