Having ICP come in during the wrestling boom/Attitude Era made all the sense even though wrestling was mainstream. Maybe I'm a bit off the mark here but wrestling was mainstream in the way that South Park, nu-metal, Surge, extreme sports, etc was mainstream. "Alternative" was mainstream. ICP fits into that perfectly.

K.T. Cuffari yeah. I mean I find their music pretty bad but it definitely fits from a demographic perspective. I’m surprised WWE didn’t nurture that relationship. Also ICP was never really counter culture. It was in the same way nu metal was. It was culture for a fairly large demographic subset of early millennials/late gen x.

Throughout that era you would see ICP signs and fans painted up like them in the audience on WWF and WCW, even when ICP wasn't booked. WWF brought them in because they were already over with that audience. Same with having the New Age Outlaws wear South Park shirts, and having John Tenta come out with a Cartman doll, and the doll being used in an angle. The audience was already showing up with South Park signs. It was a no-brainer to work it into the show. This was a time when Howard Stern and Jerry Springer were HUGE. When the WWF started steering in the direction of more shocking angles and adult humor, it wasn't some brilliant and unique vision. They were just following what their target demographic was already into. It was kinda dumb, but it was entertaining as hell, and that's all wrestling is supposed to be anyway, entertainment. I really miss that era. People are way too uptight these days.

Cornette's lucky he made it through the Attitude era without having a stroke. He hated pretty much every angle, and was actually vocal about it on the show itself. He did a shoot promo criticizing DX and NWO, who were both over as fuck at the time. I love Cornette, but his old school sensibilities really did not fit the attitude era. He was still running around with that tennis racket, pretending to be the spoiled rich kid from the 80's. He should have been more like the real Jim Cornette.

My little brother was big on them for a while, largely because of their stint on WWF coinciding with his early interest in rap, so by proxy I listened to their stuff and dug some of it. Aside from when that song Miracles came out and turned them into a meme (or more of one), I just looked back on them as an oddity that somehow lingered on. I think where I started to gain a better appreciation for them was when a friend of mine told me about how Violent J's daughter was part of the furry community, and rather than be a hardass about it, like you'd expect a rapper to be, the guy supported his kid's interest. So much to the point that he commissioned himself an ICP-styled fursuit so he could attend fur-cons with her. I know most people out there loathe furries, but that kind of thing reminds me of the lengths my own father took to try to understand and connect with my interests and hobbies (so many comic cons and table-top gaming events). So Violent J earns my respect there.

The reason GG is more liked is because he played a character at a time when punk rock was a dying genre of music. GG played his character so goddamn well and when he was off stage he was a completely different person, he was extremely shy and was probably one of the nicest guys out there. When I met him after a show I was shocked at how much he cared for his fans and how he would sit and talk to the fans like he had known them for years.

Was a fan of them when I was younger around the time they popped up in WWE. They began getting a lot of attention at the time due to a major label record deal gone bad over censorship issues on their latest record that led to a feeding frenzy around them to buy out their contract, so a crossover with WWE/F made sense. I've not followed their stuff for a long time but they've been around for years now which is really difficult to do even for signed bands. They formed their own record company, turned it into a merch making machine and have managed to remain in business for decades. They also used their record company and platform to bring attention to other underground acts that wouldn't have been given the time of day otherwise. No matter what you think of the music and image you have to appreciate their work ethic and desire to do everything they wanted to do on their own terms.
