Being a model can be very expensive, especially when you are not booking jobs. One of the areas that creates the most confusion for new and aspiring models is the area of fees, expenses, and startup costs.
There is a lot of hype and misinformation surrounding modeling expenses and what a model should and shouldn't pay for as they're starting out. This misinformation is particularly prevalent in modeling forums and other online resources. New models can get bewildered to the point of giving up and never pursuing their dream - Don’t let this happen to you.
When people ask me about "Model Apartments" I typically tell them to avoid staying in one at all cost. While a model apartment can give you a unique living experience, it can be more costly to a model than actually going out to find an apartment on your own. In this video, I breakdown the average monthly cost models can expect during their career.

Guys if your interested in modelling, STAY AWAY from agencies that charge you for photoshoots/polaroids. If you need to update your portfolio, a competent agency will always book you for a test shoot. Most urban cities have a lot of photographers who constantly need models and contacts local agencies for free test shoots. And tbh, most agencies have a little studio for Polaroids within their office or will legit take pics outside their building. Also from what I know, agencies don't charge you for being on their website unless it's a freelance agency (I assume it's included in the commission they take from your shoots). Everything else he said is true tho! Just thought I would warn you guys that it's really not normal for an agency to do those things and maybe it's a scam, plz always be careful!! (Although I'm only aware of Canadian and Japanese agencies so it could be different elsewhere, but still usually it's a scam if they charge for shoots and stuff).

That's true. Here in India, for each and every pageant, and as you said modelling agencies will charge it is very true because I have seen all the modelling agencies in my life which ever tried to apply their asking for money more than 7000 8000 and they have also charged my brother like 15000 just because they promised that they are going to give them an opportunity in AD shoots, and after giving the money he just quit everything and it felt that he was being cheated and it just left the modelling thing.

I think the agencies profit form these model apartments. Get your own and share. 30% interest is outrageous. If an agency charge 30% interest I would think that the agency is struggling financially and is being a scrub

I have heard its wise to have a secondary income stream from a job or similar when starting out in order to support your new modeling career. Do you know what is common for models to do for finances starting out to get secure enough to have a steady modeling career?

Thomas Graham waitressing/serving or bartender, or basically any jobs where you have a more flexible schedule and income is ideal. i’m getting into the industry and nearly every model i’ve met has recommended me to do serving.

also wanted to add to my last reply, what i mean by “flexible income” is that you can usually make anywhere between $200 to $1000 a night being a waitress. the weekends are especially profitable, and even at lower end restaurants you can make quite a lot of money from tips. but it does fluctuate and there’s definitely a decrease in income during the weekdays, but you still usually make about $200 a day.

Hello & hope you are safe and well. Thank you for sharing this, I will share this with the models I mange. I recently had an issue as one of my models hinted leaving the agency as a result of travel expenses that didn’t go in his favour. A lot of models really don’t read contracts. I for one run mine as a social enterprise to empower young men especially with male models being the minority even in Nigeria and we don’t charge them any fee at all. Keep up with the amazing and educative content. I tend to use your videos as tutorials of my boys at Led Models. Stay well.

This is wonderful, information, tho, what could also, happen, is going into debt, and spending, more then you earn. New models, need to understand, being an independent contractor, you represent yourself as a business, and all these costs are business expenses (see an account, about what is deductible from your taxes). You might do well some years or you might fall some years or fall all together, depends, how long you stay at it. You will be extremely lucky for your career to take off at the start (best example: getting a modeling contract with pay)! Also, remember, models who stay in model apartments, (are usually from out-of-town). Or lets say international models. They want to work (or try there luck) in one of the Major Fashion Capitals, where they have model apartments. This is because, there's always a need to find the next fresh talent, in this industry. That's how this business works, and yes, it's set up for the agencies to make money, their a business. Your the one who, wants to be a star (needle in a haystack) trying to be discovered.

There are a lot of workshops aka agencies hidden in plain sight, especially when you live in the city. I'd rather you stay safe because most agencies online are real sketchy and untrustworthy at all if you're hoping to be a traditional model.

Most aspiring models usually suffered because of what this guy said. There are a lot of expense that comes being a model and also many agencies always have a lot of overwhelming miscellaneous fees that you will see on the statement. You would be confused why because you know those expense didn't come from you. Its very confusing at times of how those charges were added. Many models usually quit modeling because most of them usually don't see the rewards and money of their work. It has been consumed by the Modeling Agency fees. Only nepotism models will never experience these challenges.

You still can become a runway model at your height. He made a video about successful models who are shorter than 5'9 so you should check it out. Also, agencies like Wihlelmina management, Willow management and BMG management sign shorter models. Wish you luck and don't give up)))

I've read a lot that agencies should never charge models sign up/admin fees, their profit should be from a percentage cut from each job. In the UK it has actually been made illegal for modelling agencies to charge models to join them. Is this just a UK thing maybe?

If you are a famous name.and face that an agency knows you will earn them a 6 figure income then some will pay your way....but if you are not famous with a following of clients the they wont pay for your expenses. Those are your career expenses. Never pay for representation or classes but you arent getting work without promotional tools and most of the time that is your expense or they might cover it for you then take 100% of your pay until they make their expenses for you back. Those are.called recoup fees and believe me, they will make a huge profit on you.

@@Bfnnature I’ve been signed for over a year now and in the UK you should not be paying anything to a modelling agency. They make their money from commission and if they don’t think they’ll find work with you, they don’t sign you. Might be different in the US though

You gonna either stay in an model apartment or in an housing of your choice ( friends, family member). Then you gonna send you to clients for castings/gosees and try to organize some test shootings which are normally for free.

Some one i’m scouted and i had a small interview with the agency and they said i had to stop touching my face and keep it clean as well as drink a lot of water(for the acne).And for eye bags,i’m pretty sure they would just tell you to sleep more.

idrinkbleach thank you I do a lot of skincare research so my acne scars and acne are almost gone but once in awhile they pop up. Also my dark circles are genetic so there’s kinda no fixing them other than reducing them with vitamin c hydrating eye creams

Hi, I have one agency in Italy and one in Germany. I can tell that they make you pay about 90€ every 6 months to be on their website. And when you get paid they get a commission between 20 and 50%. You also pay for the test shoots for refreshing your book which might also contain the Polaroid photos. Agencies usually take Polaroids of you in their studio for free, but they don’t always have a professional photographer to take them so they are not super great photos. Most of the times you have to pay to go to castings (I got my casting paid only once because I had to go to Berlin from Italy). And sometimes when you travel for work the client doesn’t cover all your expenses like travel and food.

For commercial Models it might be different. In good agencies, there is always one person who has an eye for light and angles to do good Polaroids/Digitals.

And yes, the good agencies have someone that sets up light and everything for the polaroids but If it’s not a professional photographer the result is never the same as a professional taken Polaroid 🤗
