I'll never forget where I was when Perseverance made tango delta. I was driving down a country back road back to the house from the convenience store, I had my dog with me in the passenger seat, I pulled over on the side of the road when they had confirmation that it had entered Mars' atmosphere. Once tango delta was called out I freaked out and scared my dog lol she didn't know what was going on. A sheriff deputy, who's a family friend, actually stopped and rolled down his window to check on me, I told him I was just an excited nerd and told him about Perseverance making touchdown on Mars, he just laughed and we wished each other a great day and to be safe lol

If it makes you feel any better, Opportunity doesn't actually speak English. It just sent the same bunch of numbers it was programmed to send, including light level and battery voltage, same as it did every day. It doesn't have emotions. What I really wonder though: If it's just shut down because it has no way of getting power, then when humans get to Mars and find it and brush off its solar panels, will it boot up again? What will it do? What kind of damage will there be? It would be impressive if it just had paint scratches and dead batteries.
@colejohnson49413 жыл бұрын
@@thewhitefalcon8539 The batteries will certainly be useless and I suspect the flash memory will be as well (although the flash memory was already in a terrible state.) Oppy uses some nuclear-based heaters so the electronics will always be at least somewhat warmer than the surrounding atmosphere so they might just work after a decade or two. In The Martian (both book and movie) Watney was able to get Pathfinder working with just a power source and a portable heater and I've never seen anyone claim that was unrealistic. JPL designs those things to be practically indestructible after all.

13:46 "And we have barely scratched the surface..." Pun definitely intended, and a UFO in the background lol.

I'm so glad this amazing rover landed safely, this is indeed an important milestone in human history. If the Perseverance mission is successful this day will officially be the day where a new era and age of discovery began. I cannot imagine what will happen within the next 10 to 20 years, what we will discover, and how far we'll be in science and technology.

And to think we have the James Webb to be excited about scheduled to launch later this year...May 2021 be full of Discovery!!

It´s just crazy how many things you need to combine to get some good engineering. I always hated chemistry in my courses but seeing that the perseverance Rover needs to deal with so many chemical reactions to work makes me regret not learing chemistry enough ^^

Fantastic video. The engineering behind this thing is mind-boggling and a product of time and care.

NASA is criminally under-funded. Cant 'we' do 'something' about this?

Actually, the name of the Jezero crater is pronounced in the language where it comes from as if it had letter "y" as the first letter (if it were an English word).
