I don't understand how the FAA intends to regulate these vs. other drone licensing. How does that coexist as beyond VLOS operation vs. Part 107 pilots? Hoping that means an additional level of certification will be available as part of it.

@@default_user_89 That's not a social problem we need to address seperately. Not just minumum wage workers, but highly paid knowledge and creative workers will eventually be replaced by AIs some day. Do we limit the capabilities of AIs just so humans can keep their jobs or let technology advance freely and see what benefits can bring? it's a philosophical debate beyond our current understanding. For example, displaced coders, laywers, accountants, radiologists by AI. Should they become carpenters, plumbers, personal care workers that cannot be replaced by machines? Should the latter mentioned positions be compensated more or at least equally as coders, laywers , accountants etc, that are traditionally considered require higher degrees? In a way, AI turns it upside down, anything that require brain suddenly can be replaced by AI. But things that require hands-on or personal skills still need human touch. Plumbers, electricians etc, may one day be compensated as much as radiologists or software engineers.

The biggest problem with drones is the weather! Rwanda has 2 seasons raining and dry! Unlike the US where some places have 4 season and a lot of wind meaning the drones will have to get even bigger to over come that!

Other great inventions such as ionic propulsion, metamaterials or even the famous graphene or its derivatives or elements that can act "similar to graphene", such as boroene or silicene, would greatly help aviation in general, not only to drones, but in general, as in resistance, to have less weight and be more efficient... at least I think so...

There is an issue with the wishbone propellor for a quad copter drone. Those propellers reduce noise in all directions except directly downwind. This works great on their plane drone because no one is standing behind the propeller but with a quad drone, everyone is below (downwind) and so the noise reduction isn’t as useful.

In Rwanda they stay high above the ground and the packages get yeeted out on a parachute. That probably protects it pretty well against most forms of violence and theft. The zipline package version also stays high above ground but the zipline itself could be pulled to pull it down. But because it brings the package to someone who ordered it and the drone is observed by an observer that probably solves a lot of problems compared to most autonomous drones that are navigating the streets and are unobserved.

According to the graph, an EV making 5 deliveries is cheaper. An EV has a much higher weight limit too. It's going to be great for disaster areas, but for places with decent roads, people will prefer the cheapest option. EV will probably be cheaper for a lot simply because it isn't flying. Feel like the payload is too small personally. If they can increase that then yeah. Not really sure what the heck he meant about special operators using drones versus helicopters to inflatrate quietly... Still going to suffer the same issues unless you use a different propeller design. Drones high pitched whining is also super loud and distinctive. A quad or tri toredo design maybe? Just don't see where he was going with a bunch of drones. Seals and such already have a way to drop into enemy territory virtually undetected. It's called HALO or just regular parashooting. You'd be surprised just how far they can glide before having to use the shoot and no motorized vehicle will be as quiet as a parachute.

I’m a drone pilot and this sounds awful… the fact it works in rural Rwanda doesn’t mean it’ll work in first world countries. I can see this being disastrous. No.

the delivery drone is too small it's not going to be able to fit a 18" pizza or several pizzas. or even two bags from mcdonalds

I personally don't like drones for shopping delivery. For necessary emergencies, sure, but not for regular shopping. Those drones will fall on someones head sooner or later, it's not worth the risk. Using autonomous micro cars for delivery makes more sense instead. They can deliver heavier parcels and use much less electricity too. Please only use drones for emergency delivery when no other option makes sense.

what do you think of the scaled up version of the idea for emergency rescue?
@SkepticalCaveman

@@TwoBitDaVinci great, as long as it's for emergencies. It's the same as with hovercrafts, they tried to commercialize them for decades, but in the end hovercrafts ended up only being useful for the military and emergencies.

Way too easy to hack, far too much of a security risk... Also, employing people to deliver goods is actually good. We want people to be able to work - earn a living. Putting them out of work isn't actually good.

If that was true, the FAA wouldn't be handing out certificates. The certification process is extremely complex.

@@arranf - Wouldn't count on that being the case. What you're saying is that these can't be hacked. They can.

Abosolutely. Problem: Drones make annoying noise and are dangerous because of their propellers. Solution: Leave the drone 100 feet above ground and only lower the package

Such a cool design....cant wait to see one in real life.... and a scaled up rescue version of this idea would be so so awesome.
