When you search for a text, it reverses the algorithm to find the location of that text if the library actually existed. Well it depends on your understanding of the word *exists*, is something not *real* if it exists in concept but not in physicality? Conceptually, the algorithm is incapable of stumbling upon something it doesn't already *know* technically, it can classify every single thing you write, so is anything really new if it could have already been done and has nothing inherently new? Sometimes it's a good thing to think about situations in a conceptual level instead of a physical one, leads to some fun thoughts.

You didn't mention that the website is inspired by the short story "La biblioteca de Babel" (The library of babel) by Jorge Luis Borges. It's an interesting read and ponders some of the cultural implications of such a world which is both fascinating and something I would never have considered otherwise. I imagine you could find an English translation pretty easily, though I read it in Spanish. Also, each book is 410 pages, not 400.

Apparently it’s not as amazing as it seems. It it was a real “library of Babel” then it would contain more possible books than there are atoms in the universe, and a website cannot handle more than the universe. The website instead randomly generates pages as you explore, doesn’t permanently store any of the pages. And when you search for a specific string of words, the site actually just takes your words and puts it on a newly generated page with a bunch of random characters put around it, in other words the page didn’t already exist before you searched for it. The site also takes the searches and converts that exact search into a “key” that when re-entered into the website shows the same results every time. The site doesn’t claim that the library is real, if anything it admits to it not being real by referring to the library as “incomplete”. You can also find the code used to make the site online pretty easily in order to confirm all this. Either way the site is a pretty cool interactive in getting a taste of what a real library of Babel would be

It's not how it works, not by randomly generating the pages as you explore. Instead, the library is more like an encryption algorithm, where the room, wall, shelf, book and page is the seed that generates the page. Like any good encryption algorithm, if you take the result, you can find at least one seed that generates it. It is *not* random generation, there's nothing random about it.

You then essentially have a permanent node to refer to your particular data. I would think they just have an algorithm that determines, given the rules for how the books are generated, where the searched string of characters should be.(Almost similar to a hash function, except if it gets different inputs, it will always give a different output) That way it doesn't ever need to store any data at all, no matter how many querryies are made, while still giving the exact same result when typing in the same querry, so it's functionally identical to actually storing all possible combinations.
