The San Francisco 49ers have miraculously found a quarterback with the last pick in the draft in Brock Purdy, but just how good is he? The team is absolutely loaded on offense and defense and have created the perfect ecosystem for any Quarterback to fit into, but does that mean Mr. Irrelevant can take them to the super bowl? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze the San Francisco 49ers rookie Quarterback Brock Purdy.

Does this guy know Brock has been hurt the past 2 games and he was at 70% for the seattle game? An oblique injury as a QB can be tough. Also I wouldn’t call it seriously concerning if a rookie QB has a bad throw here and there.

I'm a 49er fan and my observation is that the thing that makes Purdy special is his accuracy. Shanahan's offense emphasizes quick, accurate passes so that the receivers can get YAC. Jimmy G was getting really good by the time he was injured, but previously his ball placement left much to be desired. Often thrown high at the receivers fingertips. Purdy from his first snap makes a quick decision, hits the receivers in the body, in the direction they are going, consistently.

This Kid's processing seems elite. Intelligence/ Defense reading will always be the biggest attribute of a good QB. This breakdown is such an eye opener As for the "Bad" throws, he will see those on film and work to improve. But he's a rookie still, so he'll make some rookie errors, as any rookie QB should. But this kid can be elite at this level. As for the deep post route,I disagree...The 45 yrd TD Kittle caught vs Washington was meant for Ray Ray McLoud who WAS Running a deep post.Washington dared him to hit that ball and he did so. So he's already ticked that box
@IamBIGuUS

The throw as meant for Kittle all the way, Kittle just went rogue. The middle safety was sitting on the deep in, Kittle saw his flat feet and just ran by him, which is why there were two receivers in the same spot. That wasn't design it was a read on the fly
@t4d0W
@t4d0W Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say elite but Shanahan's system makes it easy to work the progressions and given all that strong talent around the perimeter, he just has to pick right consistently to give them the ball and make a play in space. I think the few great things that do stick out in his starts has been his pocket awareness/navigation and his consistency in structure. Many QB1s get giddy with their feet when the pocket gets messy but Brock has done well with those. Along with stepping up and even taking a big hit when throwing his deep bombs when the matchup presents itself. Can't ask for more from a guy who just has to stick with script and execute.

Yes. a few bad throws a game is enough to go from really good to pretty bad. A QB is not their highlight reel. That’s how it works. Example being that Tua is an awesome statistical QB. If you ignore the fact that he consistently under throws his wide open receivers and throws at least 3 atrocious passes a game that should be picked off. Hence he’s just middling.

Besides Shanahan wasn't looking deep into day 3 of the draft for a dude with an special ass arm. Those guys are already taken in the earlier rounds. He's looking EXACTLY for a guy who sticks with the script to execute and make the smart decisions 7-10 times to march down the field. If that QB can make a 40 yr throw off a mismatch read they saw, big bonus. The pocket navigation is already a big bonus since even most QB1s in the league struggle moving in messy pockets.

People talk so much about his arm but it is more than fine. Just see the post throw he made to Kittle this past week. In the nearly four full games Purdy's played since Jimmy's foot injury on 12/4, this 7th round kid leads the NFL during that period with a 110 passer rating. I get the haters, get the doubters but you gotta admit this story has gone from cool to crazy. Go ask Broncos fans how they like QBs that DON'T play within the system. I remember a couple of pretty good QBs who worked "within the system" named Montana and Brady, so I'm not sure why this is a dis these days.
@caa3rdrail

Also, if his "regression" as you say, is all over the film, I'd look back at that, bc his stats say differently. He got injured vs TB and almost didn't start at SEA, but still hit over 65% of his passes/8.3 AVG/117 RTG (RTG & AVG would be #1 if he played out like that). Better than his MIA outing, btw. Against WSH over 68%/10.6 AVG/114 RTG (all #1), and that D is top 5 (btw those #s were better than Hurts, Cousins, Rodgers, & Lawrence did against WSH). I like your vids, but you do fall into a pattern with your narratives. Stay nimble Alex, on your toes, keep looking downfield, and we'll check back around Valentine's Day to see if you see something I don't.

On his pressure to sack rate: Obviously quick release and quick reads is a big part of this, but his athleticism is surprising. He has an elite 10 yard split (1.55, 95th percentile among QBs), so while he doesn't have top end speed (mediocre 4.8 40), his acceleration is similar to a 4.3-4.4 40 yard runner. It's uncanny how often he gets a guy in his face and absolutely bursts away and gets rid of the ball. When it comes to evading rushers, pressuring the line of scrimmage and stretching the defense horizontally, he's up there with anyone.

But he hit the deep post against WAS last week? Likewise he hit the deep wheel route against Tampa. I love how you featured his footwork. You made a point I've been all about with him: he leaves his base "available" for the deep shot. That's something JG doesn't do. Ultimately, I hope the NFL world sees that a QB doesn't have to win a shootout to win the SB. This Niner defense deserves to be discussed among the greatest ever, and will make Brock's job a little easier
@yerdadkinda

This is a good example of Brock getting analyzed differently than other rookie QBs. There's a built in bias it seems. Historically, if a rookie was playing this well everybody mainly focuses on the player's upside. They don't ignore the downside but it's usually brushed off as "he's a rookie, he'll get better." Brock, even after what he's done, is still getting pessimistic coverage for the most part. Hard for people, even Alex it seems, to look past size and draft position even if there's plenty of historical evidence to do so. I appreciate the in depth look at his downsides though. Most others have just disregarded him with very little analysis. My prediction, he's the 49er starter for the foreseeable future but he probably loses the nfc championship or the super bowl in what will probably end up being his first shootout with the eagles or chiefs.

Brock Purdy is 10x better at executing this 49ers offense than Jimmy G. This video completely ignores his oblique injury in the Seattle game which was during a short week. He barely practiced and still executed when they needed him. If a 1st round pick QB does that scouts will be praising him. But when Brock Purdy does it means he’s not ready to lead a team to the SB? Brock Purdy has completely revitalized this 49ers offense and has elevated Kyle Shanahan’s play-calling. He is the perfect system QB which Brady was and he won 7x super bowls with that. Tired of scouts writing off prospects because they can’t throw a 100mph heater that most receivers can’t catch anyway.

This dudes opinion seems like a copy of most Purdy critics. Fails to mention Purdys amazing 10 yard split time, the fact that the Niners are averaging 10pts more than they had with Jimmy G, that the 2 games he blasted were without Deebo and Purdy has found a way to get Kittle involved in the passing attack far more than before. awesome vid! very fair assessment, hopefully the regression is from his oblique injury which he had recovered from now. teams finally have film on him now, hopefully he can stand up to the test, more 49ers vid please.

First of all, citing a drop in play the last two games and not mentioning his oblique injury is short-sighted. Secondly he’s exhibited more than adequate arm strength on multiple occasions. Not sure why analysts keep bringing up the arm strength issue. Might be time to hang your hats on something else, if you can.

Jimmy didn’t need that big post throw. Look back at the film. He had Kittle wide open in the middle at the line of gain and all we needed was a first down. Jimmy doesn’t have long downfield accuracy and never will. He was momentarily delusional and thought he was going to out Patrick Mahomes Patrick Mahomes. Jimmy also has a hard time seeing wide open receivers.

Not sure how you make this video without even acknowledging his oblique and rib injuries that were so bad that he could barely throw the ball at warmups vs Seattle. The Niners were legitimately preparing to play with Josh Johnson and did not expect Purdy to complete the game.

Personally this is a bad take. How are his few mistakes “seriously concerning” the Seattle game he was playing through a rib injury, and didn’t throw a single pass all week in practice. The Commanders game he came out in the second half and didn’t repeat his few mistakes from the first. Sure he’s a rookie and will learn, but at this point nitpicking the LAST PICK of the draft is a little pointless. I mean doesn’t mahomes have like 11 interceptions? He’s stepped into his role nearly perfectly and is doing a fine job.

Brock Purdy wasn't a NOBODY! He was among the elite QB's in the Big XII. The issue with him and Iowa State was the team AND himself came up small when the stakes were at their highest. He even beat my OU Sooners twice while in college. Like most of the QB's that came out of the Big XII, they just needed time to adjust to the speed of the game and limit interceptions. Purdy shouldn't have dropped as far as he did, but give the Niners doing b their due diligence and making a calculated gamble, they got the QB steal of the draft.

Fair and balanced. We'll have to keep an eye out for that skinny deep post. I've maintained that while he's been hot out of the gates, we can't consider him a true talent until he shows development and improvement on his weaknesses. There's a reason he went nearly undrafted, and once he gets figured out he'll have to prove he has staying power. Until then let's go Brock!

Honestly although he has an amazing supporting cast, imo he has been doing a good job of steering the ship per se. I don't think he's being carried at all, actually I think he does a good job at using his legs to make plays. Our offense has been a bit smoother since purdy took over and Jimmy wasn't playing bad at all before he got injured

Really unfortunate to get severe injury... Brock Purdy showed more than Jimmy G and effectively kicked him out from Bay Area. I still am a big fan of Trey Lance's potential and will live in a fantasy where Purdy and Lance play as one-two punches which Bill Walsh envisioned with Montana and Young, well, until next training camp... Thanks again for magic run Purdy! Really hope your best days are ahead.

I think the throw at 7:48 was more an indictment on his arm then his feet. Footwork was clean on that Read play. Pocket was moved. He even read the coverage the same way Aiyuk did and threw it on time. He just couldn't step into it and had to drive it and couldn't get it there

I don't understand the Purdy doubters. The offense was inconsistent and STALE most of the season with Jimmy under center. Brock has helped elevate offensive play, slinging throws sidearm around defenders, all while avoiding sacks and getting the ball into the playmakers hands. Don't forget that deep post he hit last week and made look easy. Jimmy might but pretty, but he isn't PURDY! GO NINERS!

Good analysis. The Brock Purdy story is amazing and I'm hoping he succeeds. Shanahan's system is QB friendly, so he's in best possible position to bring the Niners the Lombardi. One thing about the footwork not being the best in his last 2 games, do you think the injury he had could have been a factor?

For this year, Niners should be able to win with Brock Purdy. The defense should prevent being put in a hole to need to come from behind. The focused running game should be able to control the clock. And if opposing defenses sell out to stop the run, Brock seems to be skilled enough to make them pay for it. A lot of folks give thoughtful criticism for Brock in a general sense, which is fair since most evaluations are in the context of going to any team. However, in the narrow context of Brock can win on this team in this system in this year, anything less would be a disappointment.
