The scene with Midori is what almost made me give up reading this. To this day, I'm convinced that scene, is Punpun getting sexually assaulted (It's clear he was coerced into it and not into it at all, and taken advantage of by Midori, an older woman. She doesn't stop even when he's clearly crying and distressed. ). I'm not sure if he was a minor or not, but he's barely an adult if he is one. But such a thing just came and went in his life, like a lot of other things. No karma, nothing. Especially for young punpun. Reality is like that for a lot of people. That was almost too much for me. I'm glad I continued reading, because as tragic as it is, Punpun is a well written manga.

If anything its still rape as in the panels punpun starts crying as u said its so sad because the whole event changes punpun into someone his younger self wouldnt and couldn’t identify with, everything after the beginning of vol 3 is the decline in punpun as a person and his own personal downfall, turning to almost a couple rape and SA charges, then to a almost murder count it 3 times. @@ikimchi4753 i think this could be a commentary on how society views sexual assault with a male victim and a female perpetrator. @@ikimchi4753 Well I think that’s the thing however. Midori may have came clean about what she did to Punpun, but may not have worded it in a way that explicitly paints her as a rapist/sexual assaulter. People tend to have a way of deflecting negative traits associated with themselves to protect their image to both others and themselves. So for all Yuuichi knows, Punpun “may have just gotten lucky that day”, which is a very common male perspective to have.

As I was reading and finished this manga, in my mind, Midori went from "Aw, she is so sweet and I hope she and Yuichi can someday be happy" to "Hope she dies" Seriously, it almost made me feel unbearably hopeless that she ended up with everything she wanted but at the end the author was a true genius because that was awfully realistic. People like her who seem sweet, wholesome and like they could never hurt anyone can hide such a horrendous side. Calling what she did to Punpun "consensual" is far from the truth and it's even worse that she kept getting herself into his life when Punpun didn't want it. The fact she never reaped what she sowed was... damn. Many aspects about this manga are just beautifully tragic and can make you end up feeling just hollow.

I don't really have a solid basis for my guess here, but I think the nameless girl was indeed being abused by her mother. All I have to go off of is how the mother responds to Yuichi's point blank accusation/ questioning of abusing her daughter, trying to steamroll past the topic by ignoring it and chattering away. I know "normal people would have done XYZ instead" is flawed logic, but I feel the mother's response is a) odd, and b) a deliberate decision by the mangaka (an in I think the oddness of the mother's response is something the author wants to express to the reader

one of the only videos I’ve seen analyzing this section of the manga. Once again, your analysis and perspective are very interesting and thought provoking. Midori and Yuichi are such broken characters. I wish Yuichi’s story was followed up more in the later volumes. I get that the story needed to go to other places but the little glimpses we see later on just makes me want more. Regarding Midori… She did a terrible and horrible thing to punpun and it’s almost impossible to look past. Even after her interaction at the cafe with punpun, she behaves like nothing has happened and treats punpun the same. Honestly, that might be what traumatized punpun the most. His fury, hate, and resentment toward Midori was most likely kept hidden away inside festering for years

It would be great to see Yuichi raising his son as a side story. I could only imagine how the two parents would act, but it would definitely make for some more interesting scenes. excellent analysis! Im not all the way through yet, but I wanted to comment on something. One of my favorite things about punpun is how morally gray all the characters are. So despite yuichi being a protagonist, I don't think he's completely in the right and the Young girl is in the wrong. Yuichi was selfish and gave into his desires of cheating on his girlfriend with a child, I feel that shouldn't go unnoticed. I suppose the legal age is 16 in some parts of Japan but not all parts, in any case he's well into adulthood while she is still in adolescence. If it was an older woman, I would buy the "faking abuse" and manipulation, but I truly believe the Young girl was a broken soul reaching out out of desperation. Yuichi was a grown man and he should know better, and he KNOWS he should have known better, and I think that nuance is fascinating.
@wldnbsvxajyb64012 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that there's at least someone talking about this. That whole part didn't sit right with me and the (male) readers' reactions to it just confirmed the problem. During the whole arc, the girl is portrayed as a villain, while the author does everything to try to make you sympathize with the uncle. It was so disgusting how op (like many others in discussions I've read about it) continuously tried to justify it by bringing up that it's legal in japan or how it's normal for Yuichi to be swayed by beauty. No well adjusted adult should EVER think it's okay for a grown man to want to sleep with a 16 year old HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT. It reminds me of how in the movie adaptations of Lolita, the whole narrative, instead of showing the depravity of Humbert, portrays him as the victim, and Dolores as the evil manipulator, defeating the whole point of the book. I've been looking for interpretations of and discourse about this part of the manga in particular and it's so terrifying that the (mostly male) audience doesn't see any problem with it. (You can also notice the stark difference between the way this and Midori and Punpun's relationship is handled and interpreted but that's another discussion)

@@mckinleyknight1775 You're right, Yuuichi is shown to feel remorse afterwards, but I think the concept of statutory rape should never even be approached from the "the child an evil manipulator and the adult is the real victim" standpoint in the first place. it's really harmful to actual victims. First of all I want to thank you for introducing me to this series with your videos. I saw he first half of your general series breakdown and decided that I need to read the whole thing before I go any further, and I'm glad I did! Second, I want to talk about the scene between Midor and Punpun, because that easily had the biggest impact on me during my entire readthrough. The only way I can describe myself during that scene is borderline catatonic. The suddenness of it froze my blood. It dropped my emotions to a state I haven’t felt in a long time. I felt the broken vulnerability and trauma. I was wrecked. I wanted to go on, but I also felt absolutely sick to my core. I thought, “Surely, something will happen from this! We’ll see Punpun address this trauma and get over it! We’ll see Midori as the rapist she is!” But… That’s not what happened. Midori faces no consequences. And, although he doesn’t realize the cause, Punpun is terribly affected in all of his actions with his sex life and how he treats girls afterwards. The way he seems to desperately seek sex and approval from the girls around him after that. How he disregards the feelings of the other girls. How he almost commits sexual assault multiple times. How he feels a deep emptiness and sadness from/after his interactions with other women. And much more. In my opinion, this stemming from this sexual assault trauma commited to him by Midori. Although I was never sexually assaulted by someone in my life, I do have trauma related to sexuality, and PunPun reminds me all to much of how deep and seemingly unnoticable those scars are. And how those scars will drive you to possibly hurt others as well as yourself… But Midori, Punpun, and Yuuichi don’t realize that this event has incredibly deep consequences leading to his future actions. It still shakes me, and as many others have said, I almost stopped reading. It was almost a feeling close to “secondary trauma” as I read it. I think the Manga is brilliant in this portrayal though, as it feels almost unbearably real in how this sort of F to M sexual assault is actually dealt with in real life, and its consequences… That said, it feels like it could easily go over a lot of readers heads who aren’t reading close enough, or who have little to no knowledge on sexual trauma such as this (how its perpetrated and the affects it can have on someone’s future). Anyways, thanks again for introducing me to this series! I'll be watching your other videos about it now, lol

Midori is the reason I stopped reading this. The fact she never got any consequence or punishment is worse. She ruined two lives and thought it was nothing.

...F Y midori ... No one can give safeplace for punpun ... Shit being si dark they might all need therapy ... Neither father , mother are satisfied with what they have. Yuuhichi find the oddest wife to be pair with who is somewhat obscess with him yet she is now with yuuhichi are maybe a weird pair who will raise a child for now

Fuck, those people think too abstractly about their lives. It seems to be the reason why Youichi is so depressed, apart from the trust issues coming from his experiences with that other girl.
@shindarene69006 ай бұрын
That was what I was thinking the entire time! I mean, I was chronically depressed and I know that it's easy to have tunnel vision in that state, and focus more on the bad than the good. But 1. I knew there was always good, the bad was mainly within myself, self hate lol and 2. purpose(lack thereof, in this case) never really bothered me. In fact, it freed me! It doesn't matter that I'm (supposedly) terrible, if nothing matters!
@shindarene69006 ай бұрын
Although, if I had actually done terrible acts, like cheating and sa, then maybe I wouldn't think so lightly about it? But, yet again, that doesn't matter because it's impossible at this point. I didn't do anything, especially at such a young age, to warrant such hate from myself. I'm not gonna do anything like that bc tf. If life is meaningless, the self-hate is meaningless! Even though the good things would be meaningless too, they feel good so why not indulge! That's all I need, I've realized.

Yeah it felt like such a betrayal. She and Yuichi were the only safe persons in Punpun's life, and she broke this bond out of nowhere by forcing him to have sex with her, ruining Punpun's life even further.
@Johnnys_Manager4 ай бұрын
i believe she did it because yuuichi disappeared for a long time and cheated on her, which can take a huge toll on someone who literally stayed and wanted to change him despite his character and past (something that will repel a lot of people). she herself is already quite a feeble person and acted out of vulnerability because she simply desired a connection to make up for the loss and the only thing that could give her that was forcing it out of another person who wouldn’t fight back, which sadly had to be punpun. i hope nobody thinks i’m excusing it, simply because i’m giving a reason. but it’s just an explanation to build more understanding of the situation and i think that adds more depth to the story
