happy to have found you're page as im in Reno Nevada doing a jdm ej205 swap into my 99 legacy 2.5gt limited, and this is exactly what i wanted to do as well! the gear ratio is perfect for the 2.0 with a bigger turbo and front mount, subscribed :) and will most likely use this video for my swap as well thanks!

@oldfashionedwrx35748 жыл бұрын
Also in regards to the STI transmissions, They're all 3.9!!!! The only difference is that the USDM and ADM ones I believe or any that come with the 2.5L engine have a reducer in the centre differential housing, they're essentially drop down gears, reduces it by 1.1 so 3.9/1.1 = 3.54, to match the rear diff. using those 3.54 transmissions can match the stock wrx diff, though my advice is those transmissions are suited for the 2.5L which has low down torque and short ratio for 2L engines.

thank you for you time and effort you have helped me and so many others keep up the good work .
@oldfashionedwrx35748 жыл бұрын
Nice video, just one thing bro. 'where you say in your thread no more slipping clutch etc' that 3.9 R160 is EXTREMELY WEAK the higher that number the ring and pinion gets weaker unless you get a physically larger differential like the r180. at least rear diffs are easy to replace. I think if you go 5*100 STi hubs, 2 piston wrx brakes rear and r180 axles and differential you can have the R180 rear end (obviously budget is a thing and IMO much better than having a 5 speed even using the 3.9 diff) Don't dump the clutch as it'll snap axles or that 3.9 differential. Nice guide, I really enjoyed it and I learnt a lot!
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm aware of all that stuff. Luckily for my r160, I don't beat on my car too much. I'll upgrade to the r180 one day though
@oldfashionedwrx35748 жыл бұрын
+Subie Rumble if it's an open diff it'll go to one side and break on a launch.

Hello, great video. How does one know what type of diff ratio they have? To me it looks like there are only two types of rear diff. A r160 n r180 is this true? Like how do u know if ur rear diff is 3.54 or 3.9? Is the r180 from an sti compatible with axles of a wrx? Is a sti box compatible with wrx front axles Thank u
@Djyova10188 жыл бұрын
What about the axels and the brake conversion?? There is a bit more to that then just swiping the transmission
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, it depends on what you're swapping in. If you retain the R160 instead of opting to the R180, then you can keep your axles, brakes, hubs, etc. All you need to ensure the R160 works is an auto driveshaft & the correct gear ratio to match the transmission's. That's the difference between a $2500ish 6 speed swap or close to a $5000 6 speed swap. It all depends what you want.
@Djyova10188 жыл бұрын

I just got an 06 wrx and want to do the sti transmission swap. Would I have to change the knuckles and everything else? I would like to keep mine on a decent budget and not have to spend an arm and a leg. I've also been reading a lot about the PPG gears but that final gear on the sti just seems like the better choice and those gears are about a 5k install assuming you do it yourself.
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
No you won't need to change knuckles unless you use an STi R180 rear diff. Stick to the R160 to retain your current knuckles & axles.

What's the importance of matching the rear differential with the transmission final drive? is this something specific you have to do as it's and awd? honest question here as with most FR layout cars ( from my understanding ) you can throw whatever diff in the back to either shorten or lengthen gears, anyone knowledgeable is welcome to explain.
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
+TriniRogue Yes, you need your rear gear ratios to match your differential ratios. If they don't match up, you'll grind gears. With a 2wd car, you'd be fine. But the since this car has a front diff, a center diff & a rear diff. They all must play nice. I'm sure there's plenty of info on NASIOC as I don't know the specifics.

I don't know much about cars so can someone tell me what does the 6 speed have that the 5 speed doesn't
@brandonsever25768 жыл бұрын
+markcovka The six speed has much closer gearing and it is a LOT stronger. There are videos of 700+ wheel HP STI's with stock transmissions, meanwhile the 5 speed WRX transmission is only good for about 300 HP before you break something.
@markcovka65498 жыл бұрын
+Brandon sever so 6 speed is better for more power?
@brandonsever25768 жыл бұрын
markcovka Yes. I would assume it would make you accelerate faster as well due to the closer gearing and it seems more capable of harder shifting.

@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
+Phat Comp A lot of things. Plus the wiring since your ECU will think your car is an automatic still & will act up if you just drop a manual into it. I'd recommend looking into converting a Subaru Auto to a manual before considering the swap

@thomasterry90478 жыл бұрын
yes axles in the front and non trubo automatic drive shaft
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
Thomas Terry turbo or non turbo. The auto driveshaft will work from either! As for the axles, it all depends on what transmission you're buying. If the trans comes with axle stubs than you can use female axles. If there are no stubs. You'll need to buy the correct axles seals & male axles.
@thomasterry90478 жыл бұрын
i found a 2011 6 speed i think that be to new what do you think mine is s 2002 and what did you do to get the back up light and the speedo to work

Thomas Terry The wiring literally just plugs right up. The only thing you'll need to consider is wiring your DCCD. Be sure to match your rear diff ratio with that year trans

How did you debadge the front grille??
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
+Spooney I'm kicking myself in the ass for not making a video of how I did. I did it back before I had a KZbin channel for my car. So basically I took a dremel with a small cutting wheel, did a rough cut & just sliced out the center emblem pillar. I then sanded the rest of what was left from the pillar off. I then added body filler & resanded to make it smooth. After that I painted it all flat black. It was pretty easy tbh. Maybe one day I'll buy a spare front grill & make a video haha

@blackie3618558 жыл бұрын
+Subie Rumble was it the same way for the neutral safety switch?
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
blackie361855 Yes, assuming you have a non DCCD STi 6 speed, the ENTIRE harness from your 5 speed will go right up to your 6 speed. Now regarding DCCD 6 speeds and later model 5 speeds (08+) I'm not entirely sure.

I really want a 04 wrx but I am worried about the stock transmission so when I get wrx should I save for an sti Transmission or can you rebuild the stock of one
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
+liltroll Ethan Building a 5 speed will most likely cost as much as a 6 speed swap. My cheap version of the 6 speed swap is probably the best bang for buck in my opinion. HOWEVER if you're under 300whp running a stock clutch and don't launch or shift hard, you're 5 speed won't fail. At least mine didn't. My 5 speed has 145k miles on it & never skipped a beat.
@Ethan-lz9kw8 жыл бұрын
+Subie Rumble OK thank you and why do you need to keep the stock clutch
@SubieRumble8 жыл бұрын
liltroll Ethan The stock OEM clutch will slip before a gear breaks. Buying a stage 1 or 2 clutch decreases the chance of clutch slipping which increases the chance of gears breaking. (strictly referring to the WRX 5 speed)
