OK..I know it seems obvious. But-what if Magellan (sailing West) or the fictional Philes Fogg (sailing East) had gone ALMOST all the way around the World, i.e. starting just East/West of the Dateline, and stopped just before crossing it?? Would the problem continue to exist???

U explained nicely but still I am having doubts. There is a main topic about IDL in my book but u didn't came to that topic.

Why didn't they accept the IDL time as mean time? IDL is fine but GMT is the confusion. They should have accepted the IDL time as standard mean time.

Nice video. What is the reasoning, and try and keep it logical; 🤔😏; as to why the international dateline is not straight?? Especially since the prime meridian is straight. The sun does not alter its brightness for those areas, so if you know, please inform as to the idiot who had muscle spasms when deciding what the "line" would look like.

It would appear it's not straight because each country determines their time zone nationally and then there's the sea. Ye ole maritime. It's an interesting subject, depending on how deep you dig. As far as the Prime Meridian goes, it is 0° longitude. I personally don't think of it as a line of "time" directly... Imagine a gear called Earth with numbered teeth and lines, the PM is 0 on that. Now we'll add this gear called time, which we number in a round about and similar fashion. Naturally, it would make sense to line up the zeros! It was a good place to correlate and center time, which is what using GMT, and now UTC are all about. Though, the time gear is allowed to be painted and numbers changed because of disagreements, but it still doesn't change it in physical relation to the earth gear and universal time. I would surmise to guess that Earth gear doesn't need to paint itself to realize it's beauty and awesome efficiency. If you look at the time zone map where the Prime Meridian intersects, it goes through 2 different time zones (if my eyes and brain are working properly). All these tools are quite useful, but we're looking at a warped and uneven surface of a giant spheroid at 30,000+ ft on a flat piece of digital light paper... Then, factor people in... So probably multiple idiots (who still don't agree completely) with some suffering cartographer who was sent the sum of all their madness and told to draw a line of it. So he did what any good cartographer does, he analyzed the data, and drew their line and said "Gentlemen, have your line... Send payment here". And we're left to try and make sense of it. Seems logical, to me...(?) Best of luck! Ha-haaaa.
