The Internet Is Turning On Critical Drinker - But Why?

The Critical Drinker has recently been under attack by many people online, who are most likely Disney fans, accusing him of being a toxic fan and a grifter. However I'd argue he does more good than bad as the recent Helldivers 2 situation proves we need loud voices for the fans so that studios like Sony and Disney hear our perspectives and are forced into taking action. So the grift and toxic argument is clearly ridiculous for all the reasons I outline in this video essay.

@@NoshikiYTnot really. His typr of content appeals to toxic people. Either internet keyboard warriors or people that go on the internet looking for reasons to be angry. And its so easy for the same audience to turn against the KZbinr. Same reason wrestling fans turned on CM Punk.

I'd argue it's because the meaning of the word 'grifter' has drifted from its original meaning. Unless we can establish how it's being used before we discuss anything it will almost always lead to people talking past each other. In the case of The Critical Drinker (and many others), it's often being used to say he's someone I don't like, or he's dishonest and a fraud. I don't think TCD uses film critique as a vehicle to push a political agenda, which would be political grifting. I think he just genuinely enjoys critiquing film and popular media.

They are on a clear downward trend, not a momentary 1 percent "dip." They have lost over a FIFTH of their 2021 value. Adjusted for inflation, it is actually worse than almost every other company except 20th Century Fox (whom Disney bought). Not that anyone else is doing that well either. This comes from Hollywood trying to blame anyone else for their movies flopping. If the audience are right, then they would be forced to admit they screwed up and and change direction but we are talking about high ego people who hate being wrong. They did "Toxic fans" until recently but that backfired pretty badly so now they are blaming "KZbin critics" instead. The problem is that while they probably can make life harder for critics that wont help them since people don't like trash. Very similar to the recent drama with Hello Future Me. (see Random Film Talk's response video for details) Essentially: left-leaning content creator accuses right-leaning content creator(s) (or perceived as being right-leaning) of: A: Using their film criticism as a Trojan Horse for conservative politics B: Being monetarily influenced to do A Never mind that these right-leaning content creators are criticizing a multinational, multibillion dollar corporate oligopoly. whereas these left leaning content creators are defending said corporation(s)...for free! The sheer double standards and hypocrisy would be shocking if it wasn't so predictable. @@daemonhoundofkhorne834 they are not contradictory terms just like conservative and good aren't contradictory. Barbie is also not a one off, the not so great "woke" Little Mermaid also made a good profit. Plus "woke" is just a word now thrown out for everything so when people say it they just change what the definition is. HBO's Watchmen was called woke and after a slow start took off and while it had plenty of criticisms of some conservative ideas, it also was critical of progressive ideas but was called "woke" so that's why the use of the term when people try to discredit something is usually dumb. They point to failures, which there are a lot, and ignore the successes which are in television and movies. "Woke" movies and television shows are every bit as successful as "traditional" or "conservative" ones in that, most fail, a few are highly successful, a lot is mediocre.
@daemonhoundofkhorne834
@daemonhoundofkhorne834 Ай бұрын
@@jamesmarshall6619 You used the term woke before I did so I assumed we were both coming at the word from the same place, but if I must clarify further I'm talking about hamfisted intersectionality and in your face progressiveness that is common through a lot of modern entertainment. The opposite of woke also isn't conservative I suppose you could argue traditional, but I generally just think of entertainment that doesn't send a strong political message or rub the viewer's nose in it. Somewhat apolitical. I am generally against entertainment that would hit me over the head with conservative themes as well, but we both know that's far less common unless I subscribe to the Daily Wire or something. You also picked two really bad examples of successful woke entertainment. The Little Mermaid while not considered a complete flop, was considered a disappointment by Disney and ya that HBO Watchmen show wasn't exactly successful other than some award nominations that the general public couldn't care less about. In my opinion that show was awful, but that's neither here nor there. A better option I would have picked is the movie Prey which I thought was pretty heavy handed in its political posturing, but was at least a half decent movie. Still kind of a 6/10 for me though to be honest and that's about the best "woke" thing I can think of. Your final point though about "woke" movies and tv shows being as successful as traditional ones is extremely dubious. As you stated before the word "woke" is often used in an ambiguous fashion and from what I've seen most entertainment with heavy handed political themes that I personally would consider "woke" tend to fail. You can get very lost in the weeds with this though as there is entertainment I would say has woke elements, but the sum of its parts isn't woke which makes it harder to classify.

I appreciate your defence of him, I saw that video in my feed last week and clicked on it against my better judgement, I didn't watch for long because it was disingenuous from the the off, even the title alone, as if he is conservative or not is even relevant, when it's not. I'm not Conservative and I agree with a lot of his observations in current TV & film. That video exists solely to accuse the creator and his audience of doing the very thing they, themselves are doing. It is projection, it's gate-keeping, it is confirmation bias and worst of all it misrepresents an entire group of people just to convince themselves that they're the good guys, other side bad, drawing a line where it does not need to be. Even when I agree with 'the message' if it is there just so it's there, that does not make the film or show suddenly great, that is ridiculous & very narrow-minded. That's my issue most of the time, is that it's not in the work organically, it's there to act as a shield against valid criticism and to get people like José to champion it. I don't see why pointing these obvious studio manipulations out is in anyway a bad thing. This was a great video, you pointed out things I never considered. Good job. @@Pendletones77 For the movie Prey! before the movie released dude was saying propaganda on how it is another girl power movie and is going to bomb, but surprise surprise! Prey actually was pretty well received

@@Murdock347 he did a trailer review first, but then he did a review of the movie saying it was better than he expected. Nothing dishonest about that.

@@Pendletones77 Again the problem is with the sheer confidence he has in his assumptions. He blindly assumes stuff before it was released, before Prey was even released dude was so overconfident in his predictions which leads to false propaganda being spread, and when Prey was actually good he acts like he never said anything bad prior
