Here is the answer:- 'The Name of the Rose' is a very serious novel. It's a detective yarn at one level but it also delves into metaphysics, theology and medieval history. It enjoyed a huge mass audience. The author Umberto Eco admits that it is possible that the huge success of his novel was due to the fact that it dealt with a period of medieval history. But at the same time he says that a lot of books had been written about the medieval past before his novel. He thinks that the success of the book is a mystery. Nobody can predict it. He thinks that if he had written 'The Name of the Rose' ten years earlier or ten years later, it would not have been the same. Why it became so successful at that time is a mystery. i have read in my workbook! literature companion english core class 12!
