Teddy was an enigma. The embarrassing con artist TV speech after Chappaquidick, the moving eulogy of his fallen brother: same brilliant, addled mind. This guy nearly took down an incumbent from his own party, but for his own folly. The Mudd interview was damning because it confirmed what most people already knew about Teddy. He had too much inner conflict, too many demons, to carry that mantle. He knew it too.

My family crossed path with Ted Kennedy in 72 in D.C. We were taking a tour of the Capital, the Rotunda at the White House, to be exact. I was just a young teenager. My Dad was in front of me. Suddenly, we see Sen. Kennedy and two obvious Security Men walking flank left and right of him. My Dad froze up, star-struck by Kennedy's sudden appearance. Because he was standing about 20 yards ahead of him, rather than smile when my Dad waved, Kennedy stared at him and got his Security guys to glare at my Dad and wave him away "out of his presence." I kid you not. It left a VERY bad taste in mind for the arrogance of this Kennedy. Later, in life, I knew an executive in D.C. who frequented a swank bar Ted Kennedy frequently tell me she saw a beautiful busty woman crawl under his table (and she wasn't looking for her contacts). In my opinion, and many others, Ted Kennedy murdered Mary Jo. He was never prosecuted because he was a Kennedy. He was the WORST of all the brothers.

It only did because Ted Kennedy was a disgrace of a man who pursued power for the sake of it. Ted's inability to give a coherent answer to "Why do you want to be president?" was the best thing that ever happened to him. I believe it crystallized in his mind that he didn't really want the job. Given that Jimmy Carter was flailing badly, and given Ted's name recognition and the resources at his disposal, if Ted really wanted that nomination, he could have gotten it. My recollection is that his 1980 campaign was a half-hearted effort at best. Just doing his Kennedy duty. I think Ted came to realize that the Senate was his comfortable place.

TK never wanted to be president. I always say the way you know he didn't want to be president is that he was never president! I think he saw it as a burden that he didn't want to take on and only ran because of his sense of obligation to his family and his supporters. The speech he gave at the Democratic convention when he lost was one of his best speeches--and given with more passion and eloquence than he'd ever exhibited when he was actually running. It was almost as if he failed the test to get into medical school but was relieved because he'd never wanted to be a doctor anyway. He couldn't answer the question why he wanted to be president. because he NEVER WANTED to be president! and that certainly wasn't Roger Mudd's fault!

What's interesting (I guess for history buffs) is that this was the same evening hostages were taken at the American Embassy in Tehran. This event greatly contributed to Kennedy being unable to beat Carter but also helped defeat Carter in the general election of 1980.

There were actually rumors that Carter sort of "engineered" or set up the hostage crisis, knowing that Americans would rally behind him--and then had it turn into a monster when he was unable to resolve it quickly. I don't necessarily believe that myself, but there are those who do. and to Shahrul Amar: he did admit to lusting after women; but unlike some other public figures, only in his heart.

Carter came to Washington in 1977 as an outsider, and he left the city in 1981 as an outsider. I guess he wanted to do things his way with his people. Big mistake. As much as Carter's weak performances in the Reagan debates (Reagan: "Well, there you go again.") and the Iran hostage Crisis situation, the American people didn't want Jimmy Carter as their President any longer.

He got a few months he plead guilty to leaving the scene, and even that sentence was suspended. But the voters of MA did not care, and you bet the local (and even the national) press covered for him. He had some nerve to run with that baggage against Carter. domestically the most important mistake was to let Paul Volcker his Fed chair run amock with interest rates to "cure" inflation. the cure was worse than the disease. But volcker was described as intelligent even brillant man (who doubled down on his new strategy to strangle the economy until people consumed less, because of missing confidence and and high unemployment. At some points the desperate companies that are still in biz will not increase prices and will even sell at a loss. - if smart people are wrong they are really wrong). But there is no doubt that Carter is a principled man. if any politician stayed faithful to his wife - he is a candidate. They did not test Ted Kennedy for alcohol (or other drugs) when he showed up after allegedly 10 hours. The timeline he created fits the narrative that he wanted to drop her off at the ferry station so she could catch the last ferry and that they left at 11.15 pm. That time of departure rhymes with the departure of the last ferry. The story that she was not feeling well and wanted to leave protected his reputation and hers. If not - if the sheriff that claims he had seen them nearby the bridge at 0.30 am is correct - than he had only 9 hours to get drugs or alcohol out of the system. But I think they did not even try to get a blood sample.

The impression I get is that he didn't run in '72 or '76 because of repeated and then renewed interest in the Chappaquiddick incident before and during the primaries preceding each election year. The look of guilt on Ted's face every time he was asked about that tragedy says more than words could ever say.

Officially, he declined to run in 1976 for family reasons. His son was undergoing cancer treatments. But that was probably his best chance, because Ford was the weakest republican candidate in modern times. And of course, there was also Chappaquiddick. By 1980, it was clear that that would be a millstone around his neck for the rest of his life, outside of Massachusetts, at least. So he dropped back to his bought-and-paid-for senate seat and spent the rest of his career just down the street from the White House--so near and yet so far. It's ironic that Ted Kennedy and Richard Nixon both forfeited the presidency in the same way--by making a single stupid mistake, and then trying to cover it up and lying about it.

I feel Kennedy wasn't sure he wanted to run until the hostages were captured in Iran. Kennedy announced his candidacy a few days later in Boston. I think he was kicking the idea around when he did this interview, and, when the American hostages were taken, that event made up his mind. We need to remember he would face off against an incumbent President from his own party, and that's a daunting task. Also, his brother John had been killed while President, and his brother Robert had been killed while a candidate. Here Roger Mudd simply did his job as a journalist, asking a very pertinent question and he let Kennedy answer.
