@@drpoundsign There was nothing wrong with the Corvair. Nader has always been an attention seeking idiot. Early VWs had swing axle rear ends (thats where Chevy got the idea for the Corvair). There were millions upon millions of them sold yet Beetles aren't famous for roll overs.

@@1978garfield Funny you mention the Beetle. Nader wrote a separate book on the dangers of THAT car (not very safe in a crash.) All cars were Death traps until the safety advances of the last thirty years or so. The old "lead sleds" transferred forces to the occupants, as well as not having seat belts or airbags. Until recently, there were no side curtain airbags to protect the head in T-Bone crashes. Drum brakes and bias ply tires were Bad news. If you look at vehicle deaths/mile, they have actually been decreasing since 1920. I assume the early decrease was due to the implementation of traffic lights. And, perhaps, ironically, to the fact that early cars were slower, less miles were covered, and the wrecks occurred in the cities. Nowadays, we travel 70mph on the superhighways, and yet, the yearly toll is about 30K (and, this includes cyclists and pedestrians, who are Much more at risk))

if you add three inch screws to the catch of the deadbolt along with at least one in each hinge to make it to the actual framing of the door then the kicking in becomes WAY more difficult. of course a very sturdy door also comes into play on how many kicks it takes. there several vids on it with one in particular that opened my eyes about the hinge side needing the extra long screws as well. it was a local news piece on the subject and they used firefighters to demonstrate how easy it was to simply put your back to the door and just back kick usually one good time and you'd be in. when they put the extra long screws in the catch the firefighter got tired from using his left foot and started using his right and that's when the hinge side started letting go and with two more kicks they let go. now i tell anyone who will listen to have either me or any carpenter to install them.

We just had dogs. Ours actually let two would be robbers inside the house then refused to let them out once they were inside. Pinned them in a corner and kept them there until someone got home, pasted both lads and let them go.

dogs are the worst way to protect a house, I'd rather them not make it inside at all. Most of these dog stories involve the intruder feeding the mutts or just ignoring them while they loot the house. A really strong door and bars on windows dont need endless "training" to be effective.

@@frydemwingz Oh God no I don't rely on dogs and agree it's a pretty poor security measure and not worth the risk but for a lot of people scouting potential places to rob, they're a good deterrent. The lads that tried robbing ours when I was a kid spent a fair bit of time deciding whether the gormless looking idiots staring blankly back at them were gonna be any trouble before trying the door and not getting any reaction lulled them into a false sense of security. Most dogs would make noise and just put them off but ours almost deliberately made themselves look pathetic so they'd waltz in. Once inside - “stop right there lads you ain't going nowhere until someone gets home” and I swear it was purely for shits and giggles.

I got the Three stooges of the guard dog world: an uncut German Shorthaired Pointer, giant sissy pitbull, and a mini-Rat Terrier with attitude. The German Shorthair will growl and bow up at a stranger until you throw him a sandwich and he will run off with it. Pitbull is a big baby even though her size scares people. The little terrier thinks he is hot shit until someone bends over and growl in his face. The little prat will run off yipping like a baby. Next line of defense are my mean bantam chickens. They will chase away the Amazon and pizza drivers.

I am from Patagonia. Dogs are the most used form of defense for farms. If you are in a strangers farm and they release the dogs you run, don try to throw them a sandwich. XD

The Auto & Burglar? That's the sawn off that Ithaca made a century ago.They made two models. The Model A had a 10" barrel and the Model B had a longer 12" barrel. The Model B also lacked a spur on the grip.

yeah all of this is still relevant. and most sheriffs and chiefs STILL discourage having guns. and they for sure don't want us to carry outside the home. if they wanted us to have them then they would promote training on not only safety but marksmanship as well. i firmly believe they should actually provide free training for folks who can't afford to hire some "special forces" vet who charges 400 bucks for 6 hours of "tactical training". but that would mean cops actually caring and serving the public now wouldn't it.

There is a prison not too far from here I live. They have a range for training the guards. Not once have I ever seen it in use. In an ideal world the police would offer classes to people who have gotten their concealed carry license.

@@1978garfield good observation. i would argue that cops should offer training to ANYONE who wants to own a firearm of ANY kind. i also think we should be able to use their ranges at least one time a month. without some kinda background check involved (as in "gimmie your id") we totally paid for those facilities after all. furthermore i really think our schools should be teaching firearm safety and to actually let them have shooting teams startin as early as parents would allow their kids to participate. for those who don't live in a rural area or have access to range and to those who are poor and can't afford gun club fees and what not.
