This black and white educational film presented by Los Angeles District Attorney Evelle J. Younger and the District Attorney’s Office of Los Angeles County, seeks to inform and educate police departments across the United States about bomb response safety and protocols. Founded in 1957 after witnessing a sharp increase in bomb usage, the LAPD developed a "bomb squad" consisting of skilled specialists and officers. The video is divided into two sections that detail the different kinds of explosive devices and additionally, explains the actions and protocols that should be taken by officers in the face of such a device. The film was produced through facilities of KCET, Los Angeles Community Television of Southern California and Larry C. Waddington acted as executive producer. It likely dates to 1969-1970.

I took a law enforcement class in high school that was taught by the local sheriff's department. Over the semester, the class had all manner of interesting guest speakers, and by far the most memorable was the former leader of the city police department's bomb squad. He played a slide show he'd personally compiled of bomb victims from cases he'd been involved with, and I'll never forget the photo of the head of a cadaver that looked perfectly fine from one side, but the view from the other side showed the sharp, round rock of about 12" in diameter embedded so deep into his skull that only a couple of inches were still visible. The dude was a hunter who'd found an abandoned mine, and in that mine was some dynamite. The genius decided to shoot the dynamite from an obviously unsafe distance and, well...he became a cautionary tale for the local bomb squad. The other photo I remember clearly was of a garage that in the wide shot photo looked like it had some kind of decorations, like crepe paper maybe, hanging from the ceiling. That wasn't crepe paper though: it was the intestines of not one, but two teenagers who thought it would be a good idea to make a pipe bomb in the garage. That class--and esp that slide show--absolutely cured me from any desire to mess around with any sort explosive substance.

The Police Chief at the beginning was name Ed Davis from LA. Ironically the Police Commissioner of Boston was named Ed Davis as well. Boston’s Ed Davis was the Police Chief in Lowell MA prior to taking over in Boston. The more you know.

This film probably wouldn't have helped much against Operation Northwoods.

If ive learned anything from movies, it always requires a blue and a red wire (one of which will blow up the hero, one will not)

so any breakable container filled with a flammable liquid with a wick is a destructive device< guess granny with her oil lamops is headed for the big house then!!!!

I think there was a requirement for it to also be intended to be used as a destructive device. So the lamp would only be classified as one if it was deliberately thrown at someone/something. Otherwise granny would definitely be in trouble…

If you see a box or suitcase that you find suspect you should immediately open it to make sure it’s not a bomb. If you are afraid then kick it as far as you can away from you.
