Well... The concept of the fidget spinner is believed to have originated in the 1990s. According to a study conducted by the University of Cambridge, the first modern fidget spinner was designed by Catherine Hettinger in 1993. She created the toy as a way to provide comfort and distraction to her daughter who suffered from a rare autoimmune disorder. Hettinger never patented her design and it faded into obscurity until McCoskery discovered it.

Hettinger did patent her design, but didn't renew the patent in 2005 due to not being able to afford the fee (US Patent 5591062). It also doesn't resemble modern day fidget spinners at all lacking any sort of bearing or counterweight.

I know a guy who thought he invented fire again. He bought 100 fidget spinners so he could quickly gain money. Not considering that it was a temporary hype and that his spinners wouldn't come in a day... he set himself up for a bad business idea. The moment they arrived, not a day later and no one was talking about it anymore. So he got stuck with 100 spinners that nobody wanted. I don't know what he did with it afterwards, but I do know he spoke to everybody for a month to ask if they didn't want a fidget spinner.

In India as well, these things blew up and got so much popular. I remember when I was in 10th grade ( 1st year of High school), students had these all the time and they "smuggled" fidget spinners in the classrooms to play with and show it off to others. The torqbar was essentiallythe first one that really made it to market but wasnt popular. Then a few people in the edc (everyday carry) community got them and liked them as there are quite a few fidget items in the edc community so a few other makers made them. Then a few hit the mass market, but were still machined and expensive. From there someone int eh 3d printing community designed a printable model that used skate bearings as the weights and middle bearing. Then a few Chinese manufacturers got a hold of it, made a bunch, and a ton of companies tried to hop onto the bandwagon and sell cheap ones as they become very popular.

Actually the idea came a while back from this one lady before the 2000s I don’t remember the exact details as to why she made it but she lived in a poor household and wasn’t able to patent her invention so she never was able to make any money off of it. She died a while back but her daughter is still around to share the storys
