A LOT of food (especially produce) is rejected because of superficial COSMETIC reasons; mishaped pears, blemished apples, tomatoes with a large stem or an off-center bloom mark, gnarly, contorted carrots, etc, etc. This is a MASSIVE cause of waste and efforts are being made to redirect then and seek them at local farmers and family owned markets.

I've seen the struggle it caused an older friend of my mom's. She grew up poor and by the way she cooks, preserves food and even shops that it's impacted her food decisions today. Couldn't waste food or she got very upset.

I grew up below the poverty line. The lack of food left all of us with compromised health. My sister has 60/40 hearing. I have lung issues from chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. I realized many years later that my father was the real reason we didn’t eat. He took the money that would have fed us to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol. Some days we had one meal, others 1 meal. My heart goes out to children without adequate nutrition.

@@pattycake8272 because many parents on food assistance (SNAP) have multiple problems, I’m thrilled with the “backpacks 🎒 for education program.” At risk children are given a backpack of food that they can prepare based on their age to take home to ensure a snack and dinner. Many also receive food for weekends to ensure adequate nutrition and development. Improves student performance and behavior.

I had 3 apple trees this year that produced abundantly. The apples weren't perfect but my wife canned an awesome amount of fried apples and apple sauce. This keeps us from having to buy as much from the grocery store and compete with people who can't harvest their own food. However, we are also blessed to be in the situation where we grew our own peaches, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, cucumbers and peppers. Our major proteins sources are venison and catfish which we harvest ourselves. The more a person can produce themselves the better off they are.

We had a cherry tree. Produced way more than we could use. Traded with the neighbors for peaches apples whatever. We lived in the middle of Milwaukee a large city. People need to start thinking better.

You are fortunate, and some would say Blessed. People who come from that type of lifestyle, get away from it and become homeless, and survive 237℅ below the poverty level lifestyle ( how you can qualify for WIC, SNAP, etc..) always want to get back to the lifestyle you possess. With all of the work entailed, harvesting your own, is a top priority in life. And this is not just about, independence. The food tastes better. Thanks for your personal story.

Hospitals and nursing homes routinely throw out tons of high quality edible food. Now our local government has made this illegal and they must donate the food to soup kitchens. But in many areas, this practice still persists. If this happens in your area, please lobby your local government to stop this practice and stop food waste.

@@gregorylyon1004 Almost any state west of Colorada have very high rents. If it wasn't for sharing an apartment with my sister I would be homeless. They also raise our rent by $100.00 every year which we can barely keep up with. Our electric bill gets paid by Salvation army and a local churge. We are very careful not to use too much hot water or heat. Our rent is $1865 a month for a small 2 bedroom apartment. Eight years ago our rent was $850 a month.

I used to work in many restaurants including a buffet restaurants, but the amount of food that was thrown away was sick. So much vegetable scraps, over-made food, leftover food, and uneaten food thrown away everyday, all day, all week, and all year.

My daughter was a teacher in an elementary school. She kept breakfast bars and protein bars for kids who were hungry and no breakfast money or lunch. Mind you teachers don't make a lot of money. She had roommates for years.

Teachers salary, it's a heck of a lot more than I ever had, I raised 4 kids on my own, and they always had a nice homemade lunch for school. Dinner was ready when they came home. I also worked part-time.

Depending on the state (there may be universal free) it's usually a free/reduced cost gained by parents filling out forms (like the extensive kind you do for welfare) depending on the area you may also have to prove that you're receiving state qelfare as well.

Kids who got free breakfast many times don’t want the milk and crackers that come with the meal. They put the milk as they leave on a table need the supervising teacher who then delivers it to the school nurse. Many times students don’t come in “hungry”, instead they have a headache or stomachache. Once they drink the milk and eat crackers, they are fine and return to class.

I have been homeless within the past 5 yrs. I can say I'm grateful I'm no longer homeless. I can say i used soup kitchens from time to time. Yes I got food stamps. But there are restrictions like no ready to eat hot food. Therefore you have yo find away to heat food. Transporting food is an issue, especially if you have to walk everywhere you go. There are lots of obstacles ppl rarely think of.

you should be getting mostly protein supplement. its the most bang for the buck and forces you to adequately hydrate to get the nutrition. comparatively, any other protein source will cost 10x more per gram. you need nearly twice your weight in grams of protein per day if you are older, in order to remain out of a state of starvation.

Indeed. Obtaining food (either growing it or even buying it) is expensive in terms of time and other resources needed (labour, transportation, etc.). Food is a scarce resource.

I did that for 20 years while working full time. Rent here in my hometown is far above average pay since the factory s have closed in the 70s. Only the university has decent pay and they have cut hours and benefits to staff.

In my situation, I'm grateful I'm no longer homeless, but I live on ssdi, and it's not nearly enough to merely survive, let alone live. I have custody of my grandson (4), and we share a home with my daughter, son in law, and granddaughter (10). Both are special needs. They both work I care for and homeschool the children. Our rent is 2000.00 a month plus other bills. If I fall sick (which happens often), kids miss a day at work, or God forbid loose their jobs... we will be evicted. On the streets with 2 children. Yet all these illegals are flooding our systematic system and taking our resources. Resources I might add are not offered to AMERICANS. This is a crisis! I can't be alone in my thoughts, concerns, and fears. If the American government is going to help anyone shouldn't it be AMERICANS first?

When you live in a captalist country this is the result. You must plan your life when you are young so that when you are old you have something to rely on. Just be happy we had FDR for 3 1/2 terms. People like me, in my 80's, would still have to work or die. Every benefit you enjoy, including unemployment compensation, Social Security retirement, and a host of others were the result of a president who cared for his people. He was, and still is, the only president to help the common working person. Without him the elderly would be dying at their jobs. The Republicans still hate FDR for what he did to help the poor and the working class. To prove that they are constantly trying to do away with SS, or give it to private corporations so they would get the money from your withholding taxes and invest it, and then send you your checks. But the big corporations would constantly be losing your money on paper and screw you out of you SS retirement. Most people today have no idea how revered FDR was by the working class and the men and women who fought in WWII. My father was in WWII and when FDR died he cried his heart claiming the war would never be won. That is the kind of faith the greatest generation had in FDR. Today's leaders from both parties are nothing but corporate shills, and their approval ratings show it.

We are a 6 figure income couple and had very little saved and not much cash lying around the preverbal". '...don't have $500 for an emergency" that was us. The big thing was debt all kinds of it, cars mortgage (although our home isn't a high price one), student loans for our kids, and of course credit cards. One day we just got sick of being broke and went total scorched earth and became frugal overnight. Paid it all off, it took almost 5 years but now we have no debt and this year our savings rate is 50% on basically the same income that had us perpetually broke. So for us it is mainly staying out of debt and watching our spending, at first it was a real effort to save in our HISA and 401Ks but now it's actually fun watching our money grow. No car or vacation or neighborhood is worth being broke or financially unstable.

Yes. You don't have to be homeless to be hungry. I worked from 2007 to 2022 and lived paycheck to paycheck and it was hard to decide what bills to pay or whether to get food. I worked as a housekeeper in a hospital from 2014 to 2018 and made 8.50 an hour. I would work days off just to make ends meet.

The homeless on the streets did not have warming buses sent for their use or have tents provided for them either.

My dad died when i turned 18 and i still had a minor little brother, mom was never around amdbhad died long befpre that. Me and neighbors would throw down on meals to share amongst us all. So I was homeless just six months ago I finally got on my feet. Only problem is food. I can pay rent but can’t pay for food. So it’s either a roof over my head and starve. I’m ok with that because we do have food pantries but they aren’t easy to get to. So I have lost over 23 lbs due to starving. In four months. So I have to survive and figure stuff out. But I can’t even afford a phone at the moment so it’s tough out here and job isn’t cutting it.

I've never been homeless. But I have known formerly homeless people and some of them told me a bit about it. These folks were homeless in Reno in the past 10 years. They all said food was never hard to come by. On the other hand my brother was homeless 30 years ago in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and when he came home he was way too thin. I never asked him about it because he said he didn't really want to talk about it. But I don't think he got enough food.

Coming from an asian country, we place premium on food prep ourselves in spite of poverty & economic struggles. Most of the times, in rural areas, we grow or tend our own food that takes patience & time even when we are busy. At school & work, we bring our own packed lunch-snacks prepared by us or our parents. Even water & drinks are part of lunch boxes. Some of us eat at home before coming to school or work. These taught us self-reliance. We eat what we have & struggles taught us not to be picky eaters. Here in the US, there are many picky eaters starting from childhood. Americans placed premium of pleasure on taste instead of the premium on nutritional value - even the needy do not seek complex carbs or fiber. On buffets restaurants, you will see a lot of people overloading their plate then wasting a large portion of it.

I'm from Eastern Europe and share similar mentality like you. We were poor, I lived through the end stage of communism but we were never hungry, dirty or didn't have clothes. We did relay on clothing donations from Germany (distributed by our local church). We grew some veggies, had some fruit trees, my father went fishing often etc. My mother cooked from scratch. And by Western standards we were very poor, living on in a tiny attic, no central heating, only cold water in the house and our toilet was outside. On top of that my father was an alcoholic and my mother was depressed and violent but we still never went hungry.

I work in food manufacturing and from time to time we shift our BBE dates, sometimes by as much as 6 months - it all depends on what the buyer (supermarkets) want - The shelf life of food is far longer than you think.

in this case there is. Because the food doesn't come at an extra cost, but comes from optimization of the current system. That means, the system (by system I mean the entire business and supply chain, from the farmers, to stores, to logistics and to the government, in terms of regulatory framework) is not overloaded with more expense, it is just optimized in such a way, that more people can benefit from it - consumers and those, who are less fortunate and in need of food to survive.

@@dcg590 in the food industry there is always a percentage of it, that will never sell and will go bad and into the trash. Such is the nature of this business. This price is covered in the retail price, that every customer pays, when buying food. It is calculated anyways, because without it - the food industry will have to operate at a loss, which is unsustainable, thus impossible. Something, that is destined to go to the trash, but is optimized so it feeds hungry people in need - is literally saved from the trash, in such regard it is free. Because otherwise it simply goes to the trash, benefiting nobody. So technically it is not free - all customers are paying for it, but it comes at no EXTRA fee, as you pay that anyways. (with or without the existence of food banks).

While I was in a Little Rock AR Greyhound Bus depot, I saw an elderly man, such as the one here, who used his walking cane to do dumpster and trash diving for thrown-out lunches. He came up with a half of a sandwich. He was so happy.

When my girls were in elementary school the lunch ladies couldn't tell them apart. I funded their lunch account, but yet one daughter would come home crying and hungry. I worked at their school at the time so I paid the lunchroom a visit. One daughter was getting double charged while the other one was not getting her account charged. Finally I explained how to tell them apart. This should never happen to a child.

You never forget your first time walking into a food pantry or shelter, whether by necessity or pure over indulgence, yes “over indulgence.” I’ve seen people pull up in late model Mercedes to pick up a brown bag of groceries for their kids. I’m not one to judge, but for me it was a humbling experience, one I hope I never have to live through again

You'd be amazed at how much they find in the dumpsters that is perfectly edible. Fresh fruit and veg, eggs, dented cans, cans with missing labels, meat that is still cold... It's crazy.

You're smart, sir. An air rifle can be an inexpensive woods survival gun. You can easily carry a thousand rounds and survive in the woods for quite a while. I also have a hand pump 22 air pistol for short range small game hunting.

In France they made a law that throwing out consumable food is criminal. I have seen corporations such as KFC at the end of the night throw out food perfectly okay. Their excuse was law suits or experation dates.

We teach kids math, science, English and etc ~ but none of those knowledge directly contribute to keep one self sufficient. Instead of giving people food, show them how they can GROW their own abundance. It’s amazing what 200-500 sqft can produce. It’s amazing what happens when you pile FREE leaves in corner and grow squash, tomatoes, beans, and etc. it’ll be amazing if there’s no regulation and laws against raising 3-5 chicken for eggs and fertilizer enrichment, chicken gold. But hey - these solutions may cost less than a hundred to get started and a lifetime of nutritional payback…let rethink and teach our communities how to fish once again, instead for just serving them a meal of fish and chips…

We pick up from food banks and help deliver to elders on the way home. Fresh foods get tossed if not taken so on what I can I dehydrate up and bag and give it to elders who use threw there needed food's. I have about three dehydraters running a day and had to fix few times as much as I use them. But to have a hard of carrots, celery, tomatoes, onion and so on gives added needs for soups and recipes so fresh goes into saved and used. They went from over skinny to healthy elders.

Our statewide food banks and local food banks were concerned that clients weren’t getting enough protein. And, we had a big problem with deer overpopulation. It was decided to allow specially licensed hunters to hunt outside the normal hunting season and the deer would be turned over to the Department of Natural Resources to take down vital statistics, general health, etc. The deer would then go to a processor. The frozen meat is then distributed to food banks for those in need. The hunters hunt on public lands and by invitation of private land owners. Win-Win!

Great Efforts and presenting relevant information! How much is going on with this in every state of the USA? There used to be a vegetarian food relief group around by New York. How much is food waste related to businesses being too large? How much is food shortage due to excessive Urban Sprawl? How much are people getting adequate Vitamin D? How much are recipients getting job opportunity and job security? Have they tried converting milk before it spoils? Can you get a good deal on peanuts? THE BUDJET THAT IS CALCULATED FOR YOUR CAS IS REALLY SHAMEFUL TO EVERY AMERICAN THAT GETS FOOD STAMPS. SOMETIMES I HINK THE SYSTEM IS SET UP FOR YOU TO FAIL AND END UP BACK WHERE YOU STARTED. THE STATE AND CITY BUDGETS REALLY NEED TO BE UPDATED SO THAT PEOPLE IN GENERAL WILL HAVE TO WORRY WHEN THEY CAN AFFORD TO BUY FOOD TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES.
