Just out of interest i read through the report from Australia (my home) and all references, dates and studies offered in the report are from 2018-2020. Now i dont have a report like this to offer the differences but the state of Victoria in Australia has had changes in weather and weather patterns that are of serious and obviously different in the last 2 years. Michael, the damage is what gives your money its value. Human action is the problem. There was never a budget for a species to break out of its ecological niche and decide it rules the world. We're hairless chimps that have been taking credit for the work done by oil for the last 200 years. What action do we take that doesn't make this worse? It's specifically our belief that we are in control that is driving the collapse of the ecosphere in the first place. What we need is humanity to lose its ego or wipe itself out. Without humanity's weird obsession with being in charge of everything, the planet would be fine. The hard truth is that we're not needed or wanted as part of this ecosystem any more than a person needs their cancer to protect them.

If it's not water, it's herds of hungry farm animals running wild - and locals not accustomed to the idea of keeping forests. Friends worked in Niger planting trees, cooperating with locals . Went away after 3 years, report came back after ten years - all new forests were gone, except one that'd been adopted by the village elders - who demanded and got a reward for every tree cut. The idea of planting forests was so strange to local culture, that after three years, it had not been incorporated in local custom, except that one village were the chief had remained involved - as he got some profit out of it. In those ten years, that one village also saw water from it's sources improve, cause that forest was located in upper catchment. Only then, the new ideas caught on

I got a copy of the 5th report issued in 2014 and read it for myself and it was so depressing then it left me gasping for breath and things have only gotten worse since then. The unknown tipping points of arctic permafrost melting and ocean methane hydrate thawing is especially unsettling to contemplate. Individuals can do only so much and what we need is major government action to force change across the board.

It is a 3 hour workshop that you can do to get a system's level view of the climate change. It's a little more than 6mins but it's hard to distill that much knowledge. 😅

This is an excellent video for explaining simply the IPCC findings. I especially am interested in learning more about adaptation, which humanity has done very well over the last 100 years. There are so many fantastic technologies being tried right now, and hopefully, green hydrogen power is not too far away. The share of renewables for the generation of electricity is expected to reach 30 % by 2024. But electricity makes up just 18% of total world energy. Most of the other 82% is heat and transportation. Renewable energy is on the rise but still makes up a small share of the TOTAL global energy consumption - about 4 %. It must also be remembered however that Climate Action and Climate Anxiety affect rich developed countries, where only 15% of the world's population live. For the rest of the world which is still developing, they need fossil fuels to access the best medicines, agricultural efficiencies, transportation, and other benefits that we have had from fossil fuels. The UN Sustainable Goals has it's number 1 priority as reducing poverty, which still affects 700m people in the world, mostly in the middle of India, as well as war-torn countries and sub-Saharan Africa. Unfortunately, there are still too many authoritarian and corrupt governments that we should be working to bring into line, such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Venezuela. Improving health and education, gender equality, and water quality are all top priorities for impoverished and developing countries. The world must also be careful not to be obsessed with climate action anxiety, as the actual data on world food production is positive. There is tremendous advances in green technologies for agriculture, aquaculture, vertical farming and soil reclamation. Let's not also forget the positive impact of climate change on increased green foliage covering the world's surface, and higher temperatures reducing deaths from cold. Deaths from cold are 4 times greater than deaths from heat. As seen in the tragedy of Ukraine, rushing the transformation to renewables in some European countries simply transfers the fossil fuel production to countries such as Russia, where human rights, environmental standards and now a brutal war against an innocent country have resulted.

I hope you guys are invested in algaculture and land-based omega-3 production. If you need a real life demo for how important and deficient we all are in these essential fatty acids, try giving your dog omegas as a treat rather than other treats and watch them turn shiny and lose any skin issues over a week. The reason we're all deficient is that the source of omegas is algae and diatoms at the bottom of the marine foodweb. These are also the organisms being pickled by acidification (especially diatoms who live in glass houses). The omegas in fish come from the food chain, not the fish, so the omegas in fish are dropping (esp. in farmed fish but also in wild caught). There are no good sources for EPA/DHA/ARA on land but there's a lot of promise in growing algae for long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA's). This is the only industry that's a win for everything: takes pressure off the oceans, provides better and more consistent omegas to consumers without any contaminants, creates a potentially indefinite source of an essential nutrient in a world where natural sources are going extinct, and does all of this with sea water, sunlight, and waste for fuel. If you've seen what's happening in the oceans, you know it's heading in the direction of those oceans emptying of life. This is an industry that needs development ASAP. Ideally heading in the direction of containerized algal farms that can grow and harvest algae with only solar power, to provide essential nutrition around the world.

Let us be clear about something, climate change IS a structural problem. The root cause of it lies not in the action of individuals like you and me, but of how things are structured, how power, money, influence, information, and so on moves through the world. You know, Ukraine holds the second largest gas reserves in Europe, after Norway ? A book that argues this case is "Manifesto for a Democratic Civilization" Abdullah Ocallan. It's often those with privileges who claim the west's greatness. Capitalism holds up a sliding scale of liberalism to fascism, the historical record shows us this. Not free or democratic societies. hi brendan, i'm not sure i would call it a maladaptation, it would probably fall into the emissions mitigation bucket (that's the next report). I'm not totally up-to-date on the numbers today, but I think gas is only slight better emissions-wise (if at all, depending on how much lost methane occurs in transport/capture) than coal. I do think you could make a compelling argument that getting off coal as fast as possible is better for human health since the mining and burning is just so devastating.

@@petercoxable As I understand it, if methane is lost during capture it would mean greater emissions for the same amount of captured gas. If a fracking site has a gas leak, that will result in a smaller ratio of energy to emissions and thus a worse energy source for GHG emissions. Is there a reason why you think it might not work that way?

@@Lectical Firstly, I appreciate your question. Now, just to make myself clearer, my question was asking, if no methane was lost during transport and production/capture, how would that make it a safer GHG? See, it’s tough to measure how much is actually lost in these processes; It can be anywhere from 10% to 20%. Given the transition to renewables, the former is probably more accurate. Methane is a trace amount gas and makes up for 1.7 PPM in volume or 0.00017% of the atmosphere. There’s very mixed arguments what make methane anthropogenic and what doesn’t. Eg. If you put compost through an aerobic process, any methane or CO2 released after, is considered, non anthropogenic; This makes no sense because it’s 100% man’s doing, and composting is a huge industry. It’s fair to say 50% of methane is anthropogenic, which makes ppm in the atmosphere 0.85 or 0.000085%. If we take away the 10% lost, it drops to 0.75 ppm or 0.000075%. So with all those numbers, if we reduce the PPM of atmospheric volume by 0.1 or 0.000005%, how does that make it safer and or better?. Methane is flammable, about 30 times more potent but only stays in the atmosphere for about 10 years. Knowing how much more potent it is and how little is actually lost, why is it a better GHG?. Does that 10% change everything, knowing just how little methane there is in total?. I would have thought given it’s lifespan, it wouldn’t make 1 bit of difference to how the climate behaves. I personally think it’s just being spoken of because it’s more potent, yet she is saying it’s a better gas if 10% is saved. But people don’t realise how little in total there actually is. And because CO2 only makes up 5% of the atmosphere, with 95% of it being non anthropogenic; to suggest it is a better form of energy, is just sneakily adding fuel to this whole climate climate debate. It’s also a dishonest way of convincing people to go vegan. The gas shouldn’t even be spoken about when it comes to climate change, it only produces about 7% of the world’s energy(that’s being generous) and is far less reliable, and way more expensive than coal; given the processes it must go through. Again, how is that better? I know you’re talking about the energy ratio decreasing; And you’re right, it will decrease, but it will be so small, and when you learn about the gas and numbers, it shouldn’t even be spoken about it. It’s all manipulation to bring another non existent problem into the debate because CO2 is not a problem and the IPCC know it. They say it’s worse than CO2 because of it’s potency, and flammability yet she is saying it’s better if that 10% isn’t lost. It’s just contradiction after contradictions, if you’ve actually read the report and I can tell she has only looked at the mainstream publicised areas and not the whole thing.

@@petercoxable You fundamentally misunderstood climate change. Flammability has absolutely nothing to do with greenhouse effect. Water vapor is a greenhouse gas but it's not flammable. Greenhouse gases in the atm trap IR radiation emanating from earth being heated by the sun. Its because IR radiation vibrates the molecules. This is how your body feels heat and how microwave oven works. If you want to prove the scientists wrong please learn the basics first.

Something that nobody thinks about is that India is currently where China was in like 2007 and will soon start to use massive amounts of energy, coal and gas, we shall see how much more that accelerates even the current projections, because I feel they’re not factoring in the hyper growth and hyper increase in fossil fuel consumption. They should probably build 200nuclear reactors as apart of their overall energy strategy

​@@anthonymorris5084 Hi Anthony, OK I will engage. I believe that you are putting the cart before the horse. It is technological development that has created our world, not economic growth. Economic growth has been possible since the industrial revolution through a combination of expansion into as yet untapped resources and markets combined with rapid scientific and technological advances. This means that for two or three centuries it has been possible to develop a monetary and financial system that relies on the continued expansion of all three of these factors, i.e. resources, markets and new technologies. This period has brought us many wonders which we would not like to lose, probably first among many is modern medicine. It has also wrought ecological disasters from the dust bowl to the loss of the Aral Sea. Unless you can entirely disconnect consumption from environmental impact there must be a limit to growth generated by new resources and markets. This leaves only technological development as an engine of growth. Many economists believe that this is sufficient, but I disagree. A strategy relying on that assumption amounts to continuously gambling our future on new technologies as yet unknown. I do not have the knowledge or expertise to recast the financial system but I contend that it should be able to meet the needs of the people without expansion and then expand into any new space created by science and technology. Thank you for listening.

Does the report assume non-interference by threats separate from climate change (non-greenhouse pollution, pandemics, war, etc) in its projections? Surely, these would complicate our survival schedule.

As a general rule, when the survival of your species depends upon your species displaying utopian enlightenment and morality at a universal scale you might as well write your species off as extinct, just as if you happen to amass so much debt that you would need a sports star salary to begin paying the debt off that is hardly likely if you've spent your whole life living on the sofa and not training or getting any sort of coaching and eating fast food every single day.

Why do we always point to the systems that use fossil fuel to provide the things humans are addicted to? (comfort, convenience, pleasure) Why does no one suggest that people change their individual ways of acquisition? i.e. transportation mostly with pedal power (free exercise), gardening (exercise, enjoyment, food). We are conditioned to equate the value of everything with money. We are not conditioned to evaluate things based on our personal environmental impact. We did the carbon footprint thing for awhile, but someone said that was a ploy by BP, and so we stopped. If we have a mass revolution away from things that create CO2, and toward the alternatives, we would become less addicted to the modern conveniences and become mentally and physically healthier.
