I work in the concrete repair industry in the DC metro area and one of the things that DC has implemented is a requirement that 50% of all concrete waste from demolition is recycled. At first we thought this was going to be a huge financial impact but it turned out to be cheaper to recycle rather than send it as trash. Now we recycle more than our minimum because it’s cheaper to do so. Incentivizing really does work! Edit: I forgot to clarify, DC subsidizes the recycling of concrete to incentivize companies to use the service more than required and is part of the reason why it ended up being cheaper.

I am from India and almost nobody among our politicians talk/discuss about climate change. The masses are also largely unaware about this serious issue and even the so-called 'educated' people (like those in my college) couldn't care less. Heck, I myself have never given it so much thought until very recently. This has to change, we have to save our planet 😔😑 the only thing which seems I can do is make others around me aware about this and possible mitigation measures...so the ordinary people can vote better politicians in power. Currently, I'm studying car design and am contemplating doing a final year project that explores the idea of using bamboo as car body panels and extruded aluminium and 3D printing for chassis production. I'll spare the details but basically, smaller factory floors, lower production emissions and more sustainable cars on top of the switch to electric. I don't know if the tech will ever take off but this is my contribution, at the very least, get a conversation going.

Eventually I realized I’m neither a politician or social savant, but I do love fish and I know how important they will be both as an ecological force and as a nutrient rich protein source. Some ideas: - Eat produce that is in season - Buy less things. Go for quality over quantity - Get a car that consumes less fuel. If you don't need an SUV, maybe get a hatchback or crossover instead. Also look at the efficiency of the engine. Something that I feel like isn't addressed when talking about agriculture and reducing emissions is that 1/3 of the food we produce simply isn't eaten because we think it looks weird or buy too much food. I know that simply reducing food wasn't won't solve everything, but reducing food waste both reduces the emissions to produce food and gets git of pollution from that food decomposing at landfills.

Also today’s agriculture relies on feed which is not good for the environment to produce. Grass fed animals are very beneficial tho since grass traps insane amounts of carbo from the atmosphere. More than what the cows fart since it’s a feedback loop. Cow farts turn into trapped carbon in grass then the cows eat the grass and fart it back out but not all grass is eated so there’s more carbon trapped then is taken out of the soil. Natural food for cows produces better quality meat too

This is probably the BEST video about climate change and carbon emission, not only in the channel, but in the entire internet. I have to admit, the last time you guys talk about climate change you didin't touch the topic of the "carbon footprint TM" and I admit I was kind of pissed about. All the propaganda (because it was) about the topic in 2019-2022 focused on how the change was responsibility of the individual and honestly, I was tired of it, unable to bring myself to the idea that somehow we as individuals had that ammount of power in the matter and angry about the tale that developed countries had about the issue. I wish it wasn't as I was going to retire in 2026 and start a goat or crawdad farm but five years ago I was given a link to what the Federal debt was going to be in ten years in 2025 and realized America simply can't pay back that amount of money. I am honestly not sure if America will exist in 2030 perhaps a few states in the heartland will cling to the American idea(mostly debtor states) but I think some biggies will want to leave with Florida, Texas, California , Oregon and a few of the most important states joining them Florida, California, Texas and California will heavily impact Americas GDP. And yet climate change isn't. The dinosaurs were around for close to two hundred million years. They were clearly fine with global mean temperatures 10°C higher than today (CO2 levels were 3-4 times higher back then). Burning ALL the fossil fuels in the ground would raise current temperatures by roughly 10°C. If the dinos can survive it, I'm confident we can too. And we have air conditioning.

If you ever heard of the term “Litterbug”, it’s from companies like Coke a Cola switching from glass bottles (that they would collect clean and re use *expensive*) to plastic one use bottles. This caused a lot more trash and because of how light they were they would go everywhere from wind. So coke decided to shift the blame to consumers for the added trash saying we just didn’t do enough, when in reality there was a much better solution that they discarded (glass is also more easily recycled)

this is the first climate video where I felt the narrator was actually trying to think about the complex nature of the problem, and not just spit back talking points by scientists about how wonderful green energy is so therefore we should have it, so I have to show some respect to that. However, this video, as thoughtful as it is, only gets to the heart of FRACTIONS of the problem, and at the end seemingly oversimplifies the solution after it had argued against it the entire video. You've got many factors I couldn't even begin to list. Wars for example. We're fighting a cold war with Russia and the need for more oil and gas to combat the threat they face is a factor. Another factor is cutting back oil production altogether. If we seriously cut back oil production gas prices spike which causes everything to spike including the price of green energy, green cars, solar panels. We need to stop and think and think and re-think it some more.

The technological and financial wherewithal is already existence to make a thorough shift globally, within 40 to 50 years, from fossil fuel power and energy sources to much more efficient and much more abundant renewable and nuclear power ones that emit zero greenhouse gas emissions. Concurrently within 40 to 50 years fossil fuel vehicles can be completely replaced globally by hydrogen and electric ones, which will give no secondary and indirect greenhouse gas emissions since they will be connected to power generation sources that produce no GHGs. Furthermore, having a non fossil fuel energy and power infrastructure, due to the great abundance and efficiency of the fuel sources will enormously bring down the costs related to sequestering of the emissions and effluents of factories, meaning that all factories will not release GHGs into the ambient atmosphere. These and other things means that it is possible to not only reduce the rate of global warming, but also even reverse the negative effects of climate change.

It is understandable that the individual co2 emission is only small percentage but the meat industry? Idk about that as the meat industry exist only for the individuals to consume. From the farm to the plate, the meat industry uses alot of fuel and land (and I don't even want to mention the cruelty). So I'm confused of where you read that reducing meat consumption isn't effective. Also, as mentioned in the video, the world population is increasing. So to keep that up with meat products, we are going to need more land and fuel.

To add on to the issues with aviation, as an aircraft mechanic it's been so frustrating hearing how unrealistic some of the proposed solutions are. People are touting electric planes, but battery-based planes will never replace long-haul flights. Their energy density (mass to energy ratio) simply isn't high enough. Jet-A, the kerosene based fuel used in aircraft, has an energy density of 42.8 MJ/kg. What's the energy density of the most energy dense battery, Li-ion? 0.972 MJ/kg. An aircraft can store more than 40x as much energy using Jet-A compared to even the most energy-dense batteries. "Massless" (structural) batteries could help, but only to a certain point. The more mass you load into a plane, the less passengers/cargo you can carry, or the bigger the plane will need to be. You not only need to carry enough energy to carry the plane, but also enough energy to carry THAT energy. Right now, even if we replaced the entire mass of passengers, cargo, and fuel on an aircraft with batteries, it still wouldn't have close to the range a kerosene-based aircraft of comparable size, cost, and payload. I do think electric aircraft are going to replace short to medium-haul flights, possibly some long-haul flights by making multiple stops. But oceanic flights can't exactly pull over to recharge halfway through, and while it's entirely possible to create trans-oceanic electric airliners, you just cannot make them with the same payload mass and/or production cost. Fuel efficiency isn't a solution either. Airliners are already designed to be as fuel efficient as humanly possible, because fuel is expensive. Winglets? Reduced drag, thus fuel efficiency. Composites? Reduced mass, thus fuel efficiency. High-bypass turbofans? Increased airflow without an appreciable cost in fuel consumption, thus massive fuel efficiency. Getting airliners to be more fuel efficient is already the job of hundreds, if not thousands, of engineers. Algae-based biofuels are also tricky. While they are promising, will they be compatible with existing engines? Almost all of General Aviation still uses leaded Avgas, since the engines are designed to run on avgas. Most of GA was built before the 90s, so even if you start mandating aircraft be designed for biofuels, it will take decades for that to take effect. While they might be able to find the perfect biofuel that replaces 100LL with no issues, that seems unlikely, and until then, most of GA will still be running on 100LL avgas. Liquid hydrogen is also a solution I've seen, but this one has some serious safety concerns. You know the Hindenburg? Yeah, that thing was full of hydrogen, hence why it burned so well, and left so few survivors. Liquid hydrogen would require either extremely-high-pressure tanks that would explode if damaged, an insane amount of cooling equipment that would add significant mass to keep the hydrogen liquid, or, more likely, both. If an aircraft crashes with hydrogen fuel tanks, and the tanks get damaged, it's unlikely that anyone will survive. If hydrogen leaks during maintenance, that entire hangar, if not multiple hangars, would probably explode. Jet-A, while flammable, is very difficult to actually ignite (a cool party trick is that you can extinguish a cigarette in a cup of Jet-A). The same cannot be said of hydrogen, which even just the sparks from electronics could ignite. Sorry for the long comment, lol, it's just so frustrating when I see people suggest "easy" solutions for aviation that aren't nearly as easy as they think. Many of these are certainly possible, but they'd require serious tradeoffs in utility, costs, and/or safety of the aircraft. It's certainly going to get better, especially when electric aircraft take over the short-haul flights, but hydrocarbon-based fuels are going to be here for a while, until something with both comparable energy density and safety can be found.

The concept of airships is still prevalent to me despite the Hindenburg disaster (in the same way people shit on nuclear power because of Chernobyl or Fukushima despite it not representing the whole story). Rather than Hydrogen, the Hindenburg was actually designed to run off Helium, but wasn't able to due to US restrictions on helium export if I recall correctly. Is there anything preventing helium-based airships from transporting small-medium weight goods internationally (aside from the obvious ramifications of mid-transit leaks, slower transport, etc)?

It seems that the trouble with vote with your ballet/wallet is that individuals don’t necessarily have the knowledge or resource to truly understand the targets of their local/federal governments. If Government behaviour and objectives were more clearly conveyed to public citizens, I think we would see a clear shift in party agendas as the public would be able to more easily vote in favour of addressing sustainability. It seems that most people typically vote based on 3 things: - Candidate character - Party values - Previous voting choice If people were provided with clear information regarding their voting options, these three decision making factors would become insignificant.

Keep in mind that the most carbon efficient car you can possibly own is the one you currently do. Don't replace your gas car for an electric one just because, the emissions of making it are worse than just driving your current car until it dies. Once your current car's life span has reached its conclusion and no longer runs by all means get an electric car, but not before.

Engineering Explained actually did a really interesting video on this recently. And that's not always true, he has made a handy graph where you can see with the mpg of your current car how many years until buying a new car would be better for the environment. For example I believe if you have a car that gets 25mpg and you bought an electric car right now as long as you kept it for at least 3 years you would have broken even with emissions (including all the emissions produced to make the electric car) and any time keeping the car after that you are in the win. Not to mention that selling your old 25mpg car could go to someone that currently has a 10mpg car who couldn't afford to buy electric or new

I’m not sure this is accurate entirely, as your used car would likely be sold and driven by someone else (or multiple subsequent owners) until it is financially unfeasible to continue to repair. Because someone bought a new car doesn’t mean their old car is trashed. It enters the market of available cars. And the video itself said that if you can afford to buy a new electric car now, it may be a good thing to do it, because you’re helping fund the development and market of electric cars, and help bring down prices so that everyone else can afford them also in the future.
