Ethan Hunt No. I'm Spanish and I love etymology. By the way, there's always been a special bond between Ireland and Spain as they're both Catholic countries and many Irish soldiers worked for the Spanish Empire (in the 18th century). Also, in the 19th century there were some renowned politicians of Irish descent in Spain.

I thought... how useful can a video on the alphabet possibly be... but woah, this has been so helpful! I did not realise the alphabet itself sounded so much like Dutch, and the fadas make so much more sense for me as well now (we double letters to emphasise/lenghten them e.g. ee, ie, oo, which sounds practically the same!).

English normally doesn't use accents over vowels to represent sound changes. I like the idea of (left leaning) GRAVES and (right leaning) ACUTES to represent sound changes, they could be used to tidy up and streamline the multiple ways English spells the same vowel sound ("AY" being spelled "ai", "ay', "ei", "ey" or "eigh" in various English words.) The French invented these accents and perhaps that's why the English don't want use them! Fun fact, Scots Gaelic uses the left leaning graves over their vowels, but i don't know how it effects pronounciation.

Welsh also has lenition, but we call it mutation (treiglad). But same thing, I believe, first letter of a word mutates dependeing on gender and some other stuff! So, ci (dog) gets, 'ei gi' (his dog), 'ei chi' (her dog), dy gi (your dog), ein ci (our dog) etc. But seems to be same letters as yours: b,c,d,f,g,l,p,r,t,. Our accent, the circumlex, the little roof, make the vowel underneath longer. It's call hirnod in Welsh, but usually called 'to bach' (little roof). oh, interesting, fear (man) is 'gwr' yn Welsh, and féar (grass) is 'gwair'. Welsh and Irish are both Celtic languages but they've diverged a lot, think, partly as the Romans occupied Britain it had a big influence on Brythonic (the ancient Welsh language), which was, at the time, spoken everywhere south of Edinburgh in Scotland - so, the whole of England and, of course, Wales. One tip, is that words which begin with 'f' in Irish sometimes begin with 'g' in Welsh e.g. fionn (white) is 'gwyn' in Welsh. Also with s in Irish can be 'h' in Welsh: sean (?, old) is 'hen'.
@michaelhalsall56842 жыл бұрын
Irish, Manx and Scots Gaelic belong to the Goidelic branch of the Celtic languages whereas Welsh, Cornish and Breton belong to the Brythonic branch. The now defunct Gaulish language of France was probably a Brythonic language too. A Brythonic language was spoken in Scotland until the Middle Ages when much of Scotland came under the control of the Irish Dal Riada kings who introduced their Irish language to Scotland.
