No, it had nothing to do with audiences not understanding it. The movie would have been too long and depressing. The term "flogging a dead horse" comes to mind. There were already several suicides in the story, having another one would have been one too many. They simply chose to simplify the storytelling down to make it more effective.

The Von Erich Curse: Fritz Von Erich's first son was born Jack Barton Adkisson Jr. on September 21, 1952. He died at age six in Niagara Falls, New York, on March 7, 1959, after he stepped on a trailer tongue, was electrically shocked, then fell into a melting snow puddle face first and drowned. David died on February 10, 1984, in Tokyo, Japan. The US Embassy's death report says he died of acute enteritis. Ric Flair wrote in his autobiography, To Be the Man, that "everyone in wrestling believes" that it was a drug overdose that really killed him and that Bruiser Brody (a fellow wrestler who found David) disposed of the narcotics by flushing them down a toilet before the police arrived. Mick Foley also claims that David died from an apparent drug overdose. A tribute show was held a couple of months later in his honor, during which his younger brother, Kerry Von Erich, won the NWA World Title from Ric Flair. Kerry died after shooting a .44 caliber bullet through his heart on February 18, 1993, on his father's ranch in Denton County, Texas. In 1985, Mike injured his shoulder on a tour of Israel and had surgery, leading to toxic shock syndrome, as there was an infection missed by the surgeons. He suffered some brain damage as a result of his illness and lost a great deal of weight. In 1986, he also suffered head injuries from a car accident in which his vehicle overturned after he lost control. Mike tried returning to wrestling after partial recovery. He continued to compete despite lack of mental coordination and strength. After an arrest for DUI and marijuana possession, Mike took a fatal dose of tranquilizers and alcohol around April 12, 1987, in Denton County, Texas. He was missing for 4-5 days, with the date of death being set the Sunday after bailing out of jail. After several years of not being able to succeed in the wrestling business, Chris became depressed and frustrated. He was also heartbroken over the loss of his brother, Mike, and experienced drug addiction. On September 12, 1991, aged 21, he shot himself in the head. His brother Kevin and mother attempted to dissuade him from his suicidal tendencies that same day. An apparent suicide note had been found at the scene. Toxicology reports also revealed cocaine and valium were in Chris' system at the time of his death.

I used to deliver Chinese food to Kevin and Pam ('96 -'97?). They were super nice to me. The Sportatorium became a music venue in the 90's. So it was only befitting that in his post-ring years he’d work as a manager for Big Van Vader, a three hundred plus pound man who could do a moonsault as easily as he could a powerbomb, carrying forward the torch of excitement over realism in pro wrestling, and selling out arenas doing it.

40:39 As divisive as the actor playing Ric Flair was, the actual belt they used here is so terrible. The "Big Gold Belt" is so iconic, and they used a paper thin piece of brass to show it on the big screen. They didn't have to go all-out for the full sterling silver belt that they really used, but a nice thick zinc title would have looked SO much better on screen. And they're not that expensive to acquire. Though I suspect they had more limited options of what to use on screen due to copyright issues.

@joecoffee934 ай бұрын
If you guys want a more in-depth and less dramatized recounting of the Von Erichs, I definitely recommend the Dark Side of the Ring episode that is focused on them. The film is great, but there was more to the story that they left out either for time or because it would just make an already sad film even more bleak and depressing. Hearing Kevin himself recount so much of what the family went through is heartbreaking, but seeing him with his children and remaining family enjoying some level of peace in his older life is nice. Also, his sons Ross and Marshall, going by the Von Erich name, are active wrestlers for AEW and Ring of Honor, and currently hold the Ring of Honor Trios championship along with fellow son of a legendary wrestler/promoter(and legend in his own right) Dustin Rhodes. They're pretty damn good, too, and Kevin will occasionally make an appearance with them at ringside whenever they're in Texas.
@patrickdepew49764 ай бұрын
This movie is gut-wrenching drama, but the real story is actually a lot more tragic. The circumstances of Kerry's accident and loss of foot were much different as it happened a couple of years after he won, and quickly lost, the NWA title. His drug use was also downplayed and they left out that he was about to go to jail for drug offenses when he shot himself. The circumstances of David's death are still disputed by some people who believe drugs played a large part. Mike also developed drug problems and was arrested before he committed suicide. His injury occurred in Israel, not the Sportatorium, and it wasn't his first match. Youngest brother Chris Von Erich was omitted entirely, essentially due to time constraints. Doris did actually divorce Fritz the year before Kerry's suicide. It only took her 42 years. And, yea, the guy playing Ric Flair was beyond terrible.

Well, you got it wrong by accident it’s the iron claw it’s based on a real wrestling tragedy of one of the most greatest wrestling families of all time

I went into this movie knowing very little about the family beyond the fact that Kerry wrestled under the name "Texas Tornado" when he was in the WWF. The film was absolutely heartbreaking and there was more tragedy among the Von Erich brothers than what was shown on screen because the director thought it would be too much for audiences. I came away from the film with the exact same complaint as you though; their Ric Flair was just all over disappointing. I get that the Nature Boy leaves immense shoes to fill on screen but I was left with the impression that the actor didn't put nearly as much effort into preparing for the roll as he could have.

After seeing the movie for the first time Kevin said that one of the things that he didn't like about the movie was the depiction of his father Fritz. He understood that the movie had to have some sort of antagonist in it for the story, but Kevin does not blame his father for the deaths of his brothers. He blames it on the illnesses, the accidents and most importantly the substance abuse/drug addictions more than anything in the deaths of the brothers who took their own lives. Kerry to this day calls his dad "a decent and honorable man." Kerry's eldest daughter also called her grandfather "a very loving man." Fritz's wife however did blame him for the deaths of her boys and would ultimately divorce him after the death of the youngest Chris who omitted from the film. I think that Kevin is probably choosing to remember his father better than his father deserves, but the movie may have made him appear worse than he was.

Fritz was tough on his kids but that's how that generation was. I think later generations might think Fritz was a bad guy, but I don't think anything about him was that bad by that era's standards.

@@chrischar9428 Kevin Von Erich doesn't think so. The remaining Von Erich brother has publicly disagreed with The Iron Claw's portrayal of his late father. “He was an honorable, good man,” he said on the podcast This is Jericho. “What he said, his word was his bond. Feb 8, 2024 Whether he was that bad or not I don't know. I'm not arguing that point. I just made the comment on what Kevin thought of the movie's portrayal of his father.

I grew up watching wccw on espn and Kerry was my favorite. I obviously knew going in what I was in for and it still got me with every death. While I think it’s a great movie, there’s enough material that this could have been a series.
