@@jethro1963 they did not forget, the director (who also wrote the script) decided to exclude Chris intentionally. He said he originally did include Chris in his original script, but then he thought Chris story was too similar to Mike's. So he decided to remove Chris and basically combined Mike and Chris into 1 character. He also said that the movie was already tragic enough with so many deaths, adding a fifth death (Chris' death) would be too much tragedy. So that's why Chris was omitted from the movie, still sad though.

If you can believe it, Fritz's portrayal in the movie wasn't nearly as bad as he was in reality. Also, there was another brother who was completely left out of the movie who also died of suicide at age 21. His story was just combined with Mike's for the purpose of storytelling. Loved your reaction.

(Much like Kerry and Fritz (the patriarch), Curt's dad was also a pro wrestler (Larry "The Ax" Hennig).) You couldn't tell that he had only 1 leg; it was wooden; not the modern prosthetic types. Kerry not going to the Olympics as a discus thrower because of the American boycott was actually the second time a Von Erich got screwed out of going. Although Kerry wasn't on the team officially, but he was training to make it when the boycott came down. Fritz himself was a champion discus thrower and according to Kevin, Fritz's longest recorded throw would've won a gold medal had he been able to go. The reason he didn't was that he had gotten married, and the AAU refused to pay for his trip to the games. Fritz did hold the Texas high school state record for the longest discus throw until his son Kerry broke it. When Kerry wrestled in the WWE his finishing move was the "Discus Punch." He would spin into throwing a punch like a discus thrower.

In WCCW as the wrestlers standing in the ring and waiting for their opponent or for the ring announcer to finish their introductions fans could run up to the ring and have the wrestlers sign autographs for them. For laughs sometimes the brothers would take a fan's pen and write a note like "Hi Kev," on the turnbuckle pad for their brother to see when they would have their match. The promotion would reuse the same turnbuckle pads over and over, so those little notes would still be there. Kevin said it would get so hard to see those little "Hi Kev" messages in his brother's handwriting after they passed.

I was a huge fan of the Von Erichs. Kerry's death completely crushed me. All of their desths were rough, but Kerry and Kevin were my favorites. Kerry was enormous. He was built like a Greek god. To this day, wrestling hasn't been the same for me. I dont know how Kevin managed to go on. His sons Ross and Marshall have been wrestling now for over 10 years. They're very talented, and they both have good heads on their shoulders. What i really love is how protective Kevin's 4 kids are of him. He has somehow found peace. He deserves it.

It does make me chuckle while watching the film that Kerry is the smallest of the brothers when we all know that in real life the dude was an absolute unit - God DAMN, he was huge. You forgot to mention that Chavo's the nephew of the great and late Eddie Guerrero. And together they had a tag team in WWE named Los Guerreros before Eddie transitioned into his singles career. A current AEW superstar was also there, which is MJF (Maxwell Jacob Friedman). He portrayed Lance Von Erich, a wrestler (not related to the Von Erichs but was given the name as his wrestling name) that used to be with Kevin as a tag team. MJF also served as one of the film's executive producer.

Since you're already in the rabbit hole (lol) better search the story too of Owen Hart's death during his tenure in WWF. Owen is the younger brother of Bret Hart, and they're part of the Hart family, a famous pro-wrestling family just like the Von Erichs. IIRC, Stu Hart, the patriarch of the Hart family, trained Fritz (Von Erich patriarch) when the latter was pursuing a career in pro-wrestling. Btw, the movie didn't mention Kerry having a pair of daughters of his own. One of them became a pro-wrestler too, and also used the Von Erich name.

Brody would be stabbed to death by a fellow wrestler/booker in the locker room shower at an event in Puerto Rico. A "booker" is the man responsible for making the matches and storylines for a wrestling territory. Brody and the booker were having an argument about business. On Zac's physique for this film, I love the detail that he looks uncomfortably big because it's not uncommon in pro-wrestling that guys will feel pressure to be in this kind of shape to fit the bill of being larger than life and meet an unrealistic standard set by the industry. -When I first became a wrestling fan as a kid, World Class was one of the first groups I saw with the weekly show as well as the ESPN Legends of World Class show during the week. So, when this movie was announced, I was really interested in seeing this movie. However, this was the FIRST reason I was interested in this movie. -It’s funny. When I saw Efron, his physique made me think he was playing Kerry. Meanwhile, Jeremy Allen White’s physique seemed more like Kevin’s. -Going in, I pretty much knew what was going to happen. So, I found it weird when I saw a mom come in the theater with her two kids. I’m looking at her thinking,”Lady, those kids are gonna be traumatized by the end.l -You’re right about David. He was the promo of the family. If you want to see some great examples of that, look up his stuff during his feud with “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin. David had that confidence about him. Also, this was before promos were scripted. So, everything was pretty much off the cuff, depending on if it was live or a pretape. -David’s debut in the tag match made up of 3 episodes of VICE’s Dark Side of the Ring with the Von Erichs, Gino Hernandez, and Bruiser Brody. -My favorite scene probably is Mike playing “Tom Sawyer” by Rush as Kerry’s working out. It was such a perfect scene for me because that was Kerry’s entrance theme also he went by the nickname “The Modern Day Warrior”, which was in the opening line. However, it brings me to the SECOND reason I was interested in this movie and why I said,”FUCK! I AM THERE!” It segued into the feud with the Fabulous Freebirds. The guy playing Michael Hayes is an indie wrestler named Brady Pierce who did work as the wrestling stand-in for Alexander Ludwig on “Heels” and a brief cameo role on ABC’s Will Trent. He is ALSO someone I know from when I was working as a referee for independent wrestling here in South Carolina. I met him when he was just starting out doing shows at a national guard armory in Orangeburg, SC and got to watch him progress as he developed his in-ring skills. To see him on the big screen was a huge thrill for me. - The tag match scene with Kevin looking like he stopped caring was funny because of the story with his tag partner in the match. After Mike’s death, Fritz brought in “Lance Von Erich” as their cousin, which he wasn’t. To say that it didn’t go well is an understatement. -The less said about the guy who played Ric Flair, the better. The filmmakers did a good job with the casting. This wasn’t. -Because I already knew the story, I didn’t cry that much. However, when it came to the scene were Kerry is reunited with Mike and David and met Jack Jr, I was bawling my eyes out like you were. For me, it was sad but, at the same time, they were together again. -A24 did them wrong by not campaigning the movie when it came to the Academy Awards. A lot of people were saying that Efron deserved a nomination for his portrayal of Kevin. However, Holt McCallany deserved consideration for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Fritz Von Erich. He did such a great job in the role.

As someone who lost a brother and sister, the emotion at the very end had me in tears. Not being a brother anymore is something I wouldn't wish on anyone, a part of your soul is lost forever and the longing for that connection is a pain you feel every second of every day. Efron's acting was masterclass.

In 2007, WWE produced a documentary called The Triumph & Tragedy of World Class Championship Wrestling. It is a look at the history of the Von Erich wrestling family, and the promotion that they ran in the Dallas Territory. (link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZSufISpqLSiabssi=RUbEvHW6jickTRpM ) Also, Kerry's daughter Lacey would later become a wrestler for Total Non-stop Action (TNA, founded by Jeff Jarrett, the son of Jerry Jarrett), and Kevin's sons Ross and Marshall are in the business currently wrestling for Ring of Honor and making appearances in All Elite Wrestling.

I'm a fan of WCCW Dallas wrestling. In real life Fritz wasn't as harsh. In real life every death as it happened took it's toll on poor Fritz and broke him. As tragic as anything in this movie called The Iron Claw. Great acting from the actor who played Fritz. It sounded and looked just like him in a scary way. That dude sould have won an Oscar for that.

The movie took element of youngest brother Chris, who was omitted because the director believed it was bleak enough as we saw it, and put them into Mike & Kerry. Namely the way Chris tried wrestling, but was already in poor health so his body was destroyed (Mike would end up forced back into wrestling, but behind-the-scenes was struggling with anger & judgment issues found in people with a TBI or in CTE), & that in the real story, it was Chris that Kevin found after his passing. It was a strange move leaving him out, but understandable. P.S. The wrestler sliding the tray of "powder" early in the movie was the Gino we saw in that early tag team match, and was an interesting & sad foreshadowing. In real life, Gino was involved heavily in both using & selling drugs. in 1986, he was found dead of an overdose. To this day, everyone still speculates about if it was self-induced, if he was murdered, or if in an extreme drug induced paranoia he tried swallowing the evidence.

As a longtime pro-wrestling fan; to see the story of the Von Erich family played out on the screen was remarkable. Everyone in the cast played their parts really good; especially Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich and Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich. Now, granted, the story took a few liberties with real-life events; like the fact that there was a fifth brother, Chris Von Erich, who also took his own life; and that Kerry has a daughter in Lacey Von Erich, who would also become a wrestler. But despite these liberties, this was a good film. And I’m glad that you reacted to this film.

He told me a part of him died when Sloan died. He seen himself in the coffin when we buried him. 12 years he was by himself was full of sadness, anger, pain. They never had a chance in life. My Dad died from a broken heart 1 year 10 months later. Just me and Mom now. We really dont know what to do anymore besides love my wife and my children. Watch them grow and make sure they receive every ounce of love and support till I'm gone. Love you Sloan and Shawn 💔 your little big brother.

Kerry went to a lot of trouble to conceal the fact that he was wrestling with a prosthetic foot. He even showered with his boots on at times to hide it. He didn't want anyone outside the family to know, but there were one or two wrestlers outside the family who knew anyway, one of them being Rowdy Roddy Piper. I'm guessing Kerry knew Piper wouldn't blab to anyone, so he trusted him with that secret.

Prior to me watching this movie, I was sort of familiar with the story of the Von Erichs, since I’m an avid wrestling fan, but I forgot how tragic and emotional it was. This movie actually made me thankful that I still have my brother with me. We both had thoughts about taking our lives. He had thoughts about it when he was a freshman in high school in 2014-15, his grades weren’t exactly good and he had a relationship that didn’t turn out well. He didn’t do it solely because of how he thought I would handle it. I had thoughts about it in college during the pandemic (I’m a visual learner and learn best in person, but I was stuck learning virtually). And the work load of assignments was too much for me to handle since I was diagnosed with autism at 4 years old. I was so depressed I never told anyone about it, especially my brother, because of how he would feel. So when the movie was over, we both hugged each other really tight, and we both felt so grateful that we’re both still here and that we’ll be there for each other. ❤️

I got to see Kevin wrestle at a small Texas high school gym when I was around 13. He was always my favorite. There are some great sit down interviews with him on KZbin. Kevin never really chased the titles or the fame, wrestling was just a way to make money. But they were all about their brothers and family without a doubt. You could tell that Kevin was really just a humble guy.

Kevin's kids, Marshall and Ross Adkisson both became pro wrestlers, as Marshall and Ross Von Erich. Kerry's daughter Lacey Adkisson also wrestled as Lacey Von Erich, though she has since retired from in-ring and is a co-owner of the SWE Fury wrestling promotion. Marshall and Ross usually appear as a tag team, and have been managed by their dad. There's no pressure on them to please their father, or to become 'World Heavyweight Champion' or to have to live up to a legacy, they do it because they want to, and they do it as brothers.

Apparently Kevin Von Erich only had one rule with this movie. And that was to showcase how close he was to his brothers. I'd say they did a great job in showxasing the comradery they *HAD* to develop living with an overlord like Fritz 😒 That line early on where *TO HIS SONS* he's talking about the rankings on where they are as his favourites...just tells you everything you needed to know about the man. Also thank you for the line at the end...as someone who's always felt like they've had to prove themselves...in, well everything. But most of all to some family members (including my father who I'm not close to...at all) your speech at the end hit me like a gut punch! Edit: *OH!* Forgot to mention that both of Kevin's sons are wrestlers in their own right.

As with most movies based on true events, they are some things that are left out, events that happen out of order and other liberties taken with the story. Overall, I think they did a pretty good job of covering what happened, but there are things that could've and maybe should've been in the movie. A couple of other facts left out or changed by the movie: (I won't mention that there was another brother because others have already): 1) David was married to his second wife at the time of his death. His first marriage ended after their 13-week-old daughter passed away from SIDS. 2) Kerry had been married and had tried a reconciliation with his wife but that fell apart right before his death. They had two daughters. One of those daughters did try Pro wrestling for a few years and had some success but would retire. 3) Kevin's sons are professional wrestlers now. 4) Fritz and a business partner owned the majority of WCCW, and they were the ones that sold it to Jerry Jarrett. Kevin and Kerry owned a minority portion of the company and they actually tried to fight the sale of the promotion. 5) Kerry had actually spent some of the morning on the day he died with his father at his father's home. He told his father that he was going out on property to do some shooting and that he would be home later. The last thing he said to his dad was "Dad, I love you." He then hugged his father and left. After several hours Kerry didn't return, Fritz went to look for him and found his body sitting in a tree that he and the brothers used to climb and play on as kids.

Those of us who follow pro wrestling know this story, but it hits harder when you see it “live”, as it were. The timeline is loose here, but mostly accurate. David’s death, Kerry’s accident, Mikes suicide (Mike was pretty much forced into wrestling), Chris’s suicide (not in movie, literally the “runt of the litter” who never had the physical tools and couldn’t live up to Fritz’s expectations), and Kerry’s suicide. David Von Erich has said this is overblown but every other pro wrestler has said that Fritz was too hard on his boys. And the line that Kevin says about not being a brother anymore was taken directly from one of the many documentaries about the Von Erich’s.

You might want to read up on Chris Von Erich, the brother the filmmakers chose to omit. Many are angered that he wasn't in the movie. The justification is that since his circumstances were so similar to Mike's, it would have been too much for the audience to accept. I don't think his inclusion would have hurt the overall quality of the film, but I still really enjoyed The Iron Claw as was presented.
