This Thatcher film was rated 12A. Because some scenes were not suitable for miners.

Thatcher as a subject for a film really needed to be in an episodic/Netflix-style series a la The Crown. A series on British parliament would be really interesting.

I don't think it would give analysis of Thatcher at all and would just be for American audiences. I watched that film, it was so horrific and had no analysis of her motivations beyond her trying to overcome the glass ceiling lol

Biopics like this are made for the US. I'm sure if there are any Americans on this tread they'll tell you that over there they just love films about major British figures. The political side of Thatcher's reign doesn't count for squat. Does Streep look and sound like Lady Thatcher? That's all that matters. Her startling lack of empathy when it came to issues concerning the IRA, the Falklands War or the Miner's strike won't pack em in in the multiplexes of Minnesota.

I love how that film did not actually analyze or explain how the tories came to choose a woman to be prime minister only beyond her overcoming the glass ceiling, no politics or ideology is explained.

it was very ordinarily made. like it was made just for the sake of making a movie on Margaret Thatcher without any nuance or depth. Margaret Thatcher is one of the most popular leaders the world has seen and by far the second most popular PM after Winston Churchill. She deserved a better movie.

I agree. There is a far more interesting and important story to be told about Thatchers politics than there is another well trodden narrative on ageing. A complete waste of a character. Frankly I don't want to be manipulated into feeling sympathy for her. The world she played a key part manufacturing is foul - she doesn't deserve it!

artistic licence is one thing but changing something as historic as her speech when she becomes prime minister by pretending that all was well and there was no one shouting abuse at her so hard she had to raise her voice to be heard is entirley another.Then proceeding to ignore thatchers life which was politics is ridiculous

I have to ask why is there a lack of Kermode's reviews on youtube? Sometimes I liked to check out Kermode's reviews, but as I did not have the time to listen to the whole programe, I just wanted to listen to his reviews.

The issues with this video are a subtle warning from Kermode about what will happen once the final projectionist has been fired from your local multiplex.

sometimes its not really possible to seperate politics from the story of a politician .An extreme example would be hitler.Would anyone even try to gloss over the politics in a biopic of hitler?.Though thatcher was obviously not hitler she doesnt really have much of a recognisable story outside of politics .Her persona was an invention or rather a reinvention by some pr firm .She got a new voice hair and clothes and ditched the original or real thatcher and that invention was a product to sell to the public.The re invention is a small part of her story and without the miners strike, the three million unemployed ,the Falklands war etc you dont have much of a film.

a film involving thatcher showing how we all get old and die .Well why bother using her to tell the audience the obvious ?Why because old age comes to us all so that makes us all the same ?Well no old age comes to us all but its a little better when your not poor and isolated.Yes thatcher lost her husband and her marbles but her children were around and she was certainly comfortable so not really the same.Not like pensioners choosing between heating and eating or selling the house to pay for long term care.
@michaelhall5429
@michaelhall5429 4 жыл бұрын
Old age doesn't come to us all. Plenty of people all around the world never get old enough to worry about heating or losing their marbles. Some people don't even get marbles. There are people for whom the wealth gap from them to you is tremendously larger than the gap from you to Margie.

Whatever about the merits of the film as a film, I did produce an interesting (and rare) debate between the 2. If I understood Kermode rightly, you can look at Thatcher from 2 distinct angles, namely, the feminist and the political. Any other is in danger of becoming fluff, and I agree with him. This looks like a fine impression by Ms Streep but with little substance.

Mark argues that the film isn't 'political enough', and in fact, those who saw the film with me, said exactly the same thing. However, I would ask Mark, how would HE, a man with his political convictions (as with everyone else) find a means of presenting the politics of Margaret Thatcher without alienating the audience?
@trinityj1
@trinityj1 13 жыл бұрын
@MaManfie It would be possible to make a film based on political history and facts without the film itself taking a political stance. Difficult, but possible.

@microwaves25 I suspect it's an expression of an underlying hope for a superior leader/father-figure to come forth and make everything better. Satasifaction with government throughout the western democracies is at a real low. On a more practical level these type of films are Oscar-bait.

I normally find Mark Kermode's reviews informative but it seems his politics have clouded his judgement. This year he praised the documentary "Senna" because it was more about Senna the man than Senna the F1 driver. Yet he slams "The Iron Lady" because they concentrated more on Thatcher the woman as opposed to Thatcher the politician. I think Mayo talked alot of sense in this clip.
@ReclusiveDuck
@ReclusiveDuck 13 жыл бұрын
@RAIDERS58th You're perfectly correct, and your comments could apply to nearly any other politician too.......Except this is just a film and shouldn't be taken seriously. If they made a realisitic film about politics no one would watch it!

Why has the political/major world leader, become such a trend in cinema. You have Iron Lady and Lincoln coming up with a host of previous films (Kings Speech, The Queen, Frost/Nixon etc). It's usually big time actors, with big time directors and I don't know but this is just my opinion, they are not terribly interesting. They don't give me a great cinematic experience (Kings Speech is an exception though). Politics is not very interesting in real life let alone on the big screen.

politics aside, this film is absolute tripe. adding in more politics would have made this film so much more engaging. By ignoring the only interesting part of Margret Thatcher - her political career - this film becomes a really boring, and unnecessary, account of dementia and old age

seems their seems to be (along side this film) an attempt to re,wright thatcher as an angel that she was not , she started all the shit we are in now for instance , if they leave the politics out you leave the story out , i mean whats it going to be about her wonderful personality . sounds like a pile of shit just like the one thatcher left us all .
