As a former driller, I can 100% attest to the "blue collar Olympics". I remember when I was about 19, working an average of 95 hours a week in a tough and arguably dangerous job, I was talking to a 50 year old pipefitter on a job site. He said we were insane to work that much, and that he would never do it anymore. He wanted to live his life, etc. My coworkers and I scoffed and said he was weak. Boy oh boy were we dumb. That dude had it made in the shade and wasn't ashamed, while we were breaking our backs in the hot sun, thinking we were better than him for working more/dirtier/more dangerously. Bad mindset to have, glad I grew out of it.

I'll take the partially dissenting opinion where I believe the tool should match the need, and if we are talking college/university student, I will assume that in this case they do not come from money, especially at how expensive post-secondary education is in the US. I kind of agree that you should wear what you want, and not to listen to what others say. I also think that not all good ideas at the time are good ideas in the future. As an aside, I hate the qualifier, "real". All men are real men and, more commonly, all women are real women.

I consider it, long term investment for foot health, comfort, and price. With Nick's and Whites you can send em back, have em redone, when really bad fully rebuilt and custom fitted plus the arch support is significant. The custom fit and customization options are pretty nice too so whether you're a college student, retail worker, F1 driver, hunter, actor or a Hotshot /smokejumper. Theres a boot for you and as everyone said, buy what you wish. USA.

The Nicks are about twice the price as the Iron Rangers. They should be way cooler. Nice boots, but $$$.
@zachthompson53355 жыл бұрын
Nick Trnka “cooler” is personal preference though. Personally I prefer the “cool” of Nick’s but that isn’t the reason I wear Them. For me it’s an assessment of value vs price and what you get with higher end boot makers, value far exceeds price and thus isn’t considered “expensive.”
@nicktrnka14805 жыл бұрын
@@zachthompson5335 I see your point. There is a great deal of subjectivity in a personal preference and value. My thought was that it is not unexpected that the Nicks are better than the Iron Rangers because they do cost twice the price; they should be better. Certainly, one would expect more in value and quality for $500 vs $250 even in a boot. For example, while both excellent on the track, a Porsche Cayman is cooler than a Subaru BRZ. Now the issue is how to justify Nicks when I have lots of boots that are still in good shape; don't want to be wasteful...
@zachthompson53355 жыл бұрын
Nick Trnka agreed. It’s different strokes for different folks. Just like anything in life that we spend our hard earned money on, it’s whatever fits you needs, wants, budget and most importantly, whatever makes you happy. So long as it makes you happy, that’s a win in my book.

Carl you nailed it! Though I recomend that my friends take a few days vacation to Spokane and be fitted at the store. This goes for both Nicks and Whites. The higher quality things about the nicks over the redwings are what make the redwings better for many people. - The leather on the redwings is softer, still pretty tough. But the overall size/weight and slim profile goes to redwings. - The nicks foot bed/sole has more layers, the redwing is simpler with a real good durable sole. Again lower profile less weight, less bulk. It is like comparing a Humvee with a Wrangler. And the above is even more clear when comparing to other nicks models.

“Lumbersexuals” I blew my coffee out of my nose, that’s hilarious. I’m right there with you though I have a masters degree, but I started out as a saw hand (had to pay for college), then timber cruiser and log scaler at a very large mill complex. Long hot days either on the mill yard or in the woods, then moved into logging contract supervision. I put in 10 years in the field (admittedly some was part time during college). Then someone took notice and I moved to the office as a forest manager (think forester on steroids) and now wood guru for our manufacturing facilities as well. I need a boot that can walk into an office and look presentable, walk onto a wood yard and hold up to that nasty environment, and possibly cruise timber all in the same day. If it had a steel toe this one could fit the bill, I’m currently looking at a custom Builder Pro because I need the safety toe in the mill, though I love my Iron Rangers if I’m not going to need steel toes. If these had a safety toe they would be perfect for my needs!

Hey Carl, could really use your advice/expertise pls? I'm about to order 3 pairs of Nick's 8" boots, 2 with the "4 stitch, leather reinforced Cap Toe Option" & a plain toe boot, & I can't figure out whether to order them with a "celastic toe or unstructured toe" & figured you'd know right away based on your extensive experience w/Nicks. So 4 me, I only care that my Nick's boots don't have the toe collapse in 5 or hopefully even 15 years w/easy, light use, so I thought I'd ask you what you recommend. If it's not needed on the "stitched toe capped" boots since Nicks loads up extra layers of leather there, super...I just don't know. But my concern is on both style boots, having a flat tire look (that I've seen on some well worn & fairly new boots) right in the middle of the "toe cap" area (I'm fine w/the wrinkle just behind the toe box that forms from squatting down/wear) & am purely concerned about "looks," since I will never use any of my Nicks boots for work or need ANY toe protection from dropped "stuff" at all. Rather, I just don't want the leather to droop down to my toes/foot & create a divot(s) between the leading edge of the boot tip to the normal crease-area. What do you think? This question is specifically related to Nick's boots. That said, I did some research prior to reaching out to u, and noticed Truman goes w/"Structured" (I'm guessing some sort of extra toe support) on virtually ALL of their boots, but realize they are a different company, so I could really use your help. Thanks for your advice in advace & ur informative videos! wT
@CarlMurawski2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you want a celastic toe. If you take a look at my Whites Bounty Hunters (there’s a video on them from a few years back) you’ll see an unstructured toe. They very quickly developed the “flat tire” look you mentioned, and there’s no coming back. Even with a toe cap of 7/8 oz leather like they use on their work boot line, a combined 16oz will still conform to your foot especially when introduced to moisture. Have a look at this model for example: bit.ly/3AqXucb Even with that extra toe cap, you’ll want something to hold the shape. The only other thing you could do is ensure you use shoe trees religiously. Wet leather will dry and “harden” around a shoe tree, maintaining its original shape.

I agree 💯%!!! I don’t see how the IR looks “clownish”. I don’t think people who makes these claims of the IR has actually compared a clown shoe side by side since there’s zero resemblance.

I was considering ordering a pair of Falcon boots from Nicks but the Americana maybe a better overall option. Do you know the major difference between the two?

I love my nick’s boots. I got the falcons in burgundy and I just ordered another pair. Rangers in chocolate. I do see a pair of builder pro’s in black for next year.

For the price I love my Chippewa service boot, got them for like $200 on sale, same heritage quality, horween chromexel leather, and in my opinion better silhouette,

I think the information is presented great! I love how you mentioned it's not really for a job site but you did mention blue collar people talking about getting dirty and sweaty to measure work ethic, which is 100% true. At the same time I don't know most people, even the licensed plumbers per say that make $50 plus an hour who would buy these boots because of cost. This is a stereotype for sure as I do know a lot of Sneakerheads pay crazy amount of money for sneakers. To be fair none are blue collar works, So it would be interesting to see who the customer demographics are for these boots. I say this as I and others would save for a year to get a nice pair of Red Wings when they are starting out at an apprentice and/or school level when in theory you would need the better boot as you are doing 80% of the work, at least all the grunt work.

I've been thinking about getting a pair of these, they look awesome they have that Nick's name behind them so u know they're going to last for years, it's just that initial cost that's holding me back, and the break in time.

Hey Carl, do you use shoe trees in your boots??
@wdrader12535 жыл бұрын
These are 6.5 oz leather. What weight is RW Beckman featherstone for comparison? I like my Becks but would like a taller heal and not opposed to a more robust build if possible. I am more into a dressier boot but I want support being a big guy

Did they size you the same in the HNW last as your BuilderPro boots? Interested in Nicks 5 eye derby shoe but it's on the HNW last and I am used to the 55 last. Thanks!

Plaid shirt, tin pants, goatee with upturned mustache, suspenders, floppy hat, mullet or man bun... $350-$1200 work boots. Works a phone at Amazon. Only thing missing is the Starbucks in hand. LOL! Why do I hear the Monty Python "Lumberjack Song" in my head?

Hey Carl how was the sizing? Did you have to go up a half a size from your Builder Pro's. I have heard that I may need to go up a half a size when I go to a boot on the HNW last.
