As a former driller, I can 100% attest to the "blue collar Olympics". I remember when I was about 19, working an average of 95 hours a week in a tough and arguably dangerous job, I was talking to a 50 year old pipefitter on a job site. He said we were insane to work that much, and that he would never do it anymore. He wanted to live his life, etc. My coworkers and I scoffed and said he was weak. Boy oh boy were we dumb. That dude had it made in the shade and wasn't ashamed, while we were breaking our backs in the hot sun, thinking we were better than him for working more/dirtier/more dangerously. Bad mindset to have, glad I grew out of it.

I'll take the partially dissenting opinion where I believe the tool should match the need, and if we are talking college/university student, I will assume that in this case they do not come from money, especially at how expensive post-secondary education is in the US. I kind of agree that you should wear what you want, and not to listen to what others say. I also think that not all good ideas at the time are good ideas in the future. As an aside, I hate the qualifier, "real". All men are real men and, more commonly, all women are real women.

I consider it, long term investment for foot health, comfort, and price. With Nick's and Whites you can send em back, have em redone, when really bad fully rebuilt and custom fitted plus the arch support is significant. The custom fit and customization options are pretty nice too so whether you're a college student, retail worker, F1 driver, hunter, actor or a Hotshot /smokejumper. @zachthompson53354 жыл бұрын
Nick Trnka “cooler” is personal preference though. Personally I prefer the “cool” of Nick’s but that isn’t the reason I wear Them. For me it’s an assessment of value vs price and what you get with higher end boot makers, value far exceeds price and thus isn’t considered “expensive.”
@nicktrnka14804 жыл бұрын
@@zachthompson5335 I see your point. There is a great deal of subjectivity in a personal preference and value. My thought was that it is not unexpected that the Nicks are better than the Iron Rangers because they do cost twice the price; they should be better. Certainly, one would expect more in value and quality for $500 vs $250 even in a boot. For example, while both excellent on the track, a Porsche Cayman is cooler than a Subaru BRZ. Now the issue is how to justify Nicks when I have lots of boots that are still in good shape; don't want to be wasteful...
@zachthompson53354 жыл бұрын
Nick Trnka agreed. It’s different strokes for different folks. Just like anything in life that we spend our hard earned money on, it’s whatever fits you needs, wants, budget and most importantly, whatever makes you happy. So long as it makes you happy, that’s a win in my book.

“Lumbersexuals” I blew my coffee out of my nose, that’s hilarious. I’m right there with you though I have a masters degree, but I started out as a saw hand (had to pay for college), then timber cruiser and log scaler at a very large mill complex. Long hot days either on the mill yard or in the woods, then moved into logging contract supervision. I put in 10 years in the field (admittedly some was part time during college). Then someone took notice and I moved to the office as a forest manager (think forester on steroids) and now wood guru for our manufacturing facilities as well. I need a boot that can walk into an office and look presentable, walk onto a wood yard and hold up to that nasty environment, and possibly cruise timber all in the same day. If it had a steel toe this one could fit the bill, I’m currently looking at a custom Builder Pro because I need the safety toe in the mill, though I love my Iron Rangers if I’m not going to need steel toes. If these had a safety toe they would be perfect for my needs!

The higher quality things about the nicks over the redwings are what make the redwings better for many people. - The leather on the redwings is softer, still pretty tough. But the overall size/weight and slim profile goes to redwings. - The nicks foot bed/sole has more layers, the redwing is simpler with a real good durable sole. Again lower profile less weight, less bulk. It is like comparing a Humvee with a Wrangler. And the above is even more clear when comparing to other nicks models.

I can confirm the macho measuring that happens in blue-collar envirnments. Sometimes people will actually work harder (less efficiently) than necessary just to avoid looking weak. "Work smarter, not harder," is a maxim that will not go over well in a lot of blue-collar situations. Of course, sometimes people will surprise you and appreciate doing things in a way that leaves them less busted up and exhausted at the end of the day. The test of character is: Are you *willing* to work hard when the situation demands it? That shows character. Demanding to work hard unnecessarily is literally stupid and insecure. The old-timers often know from experience and wish they had worked smarter in their younger days. Also, there is (somewhat deservedly) a very cynical, mocking attitude that can creep up toward HR-type rules and regulations. Everyone makes fun of OSHA, and a lot of safety and other training is CYA overkill, but things like "Lift with your legs, not your back," "Get help to haul heavy loads," "Use the correct equipment for the job instead of automatically brute-forcing every obsticle," aren't hokey clichés. They're things smart people do so that they can still bend over and pick up their kids in 10 years, and keep doing the tough job that provides for their family and future. But, you'll occassionally get guys that hear something like that, insult the masculinity of the person who dared utter such effeminate tripe, and bull ahead regardless to prove how much of a real man they are. And some aren't even men. There are two cliches of women in hard blue-collar work. 1) The diversity hire/boss's neice with a bad attitude, bigger chip on her shoulder than is good for her, which causes the men to do more work to make up for it, while she hates them for it. 2) The butch lady that nobody messes with. I'm serious. 9 times out of 10, the one that most people are scared of pissing off is the tough, middle-aged female who can hold her own. She doesn't start anything, but she doesn't take anything either.

I bought Iron Rangers because they had a low heel, and reminded me of a pair of Justin Lace-r work boots I had about 20 years ago. Loving the IRs, and the old school style. Reminds me of old black and white pictures of American men about 100 years ago.

"Not good for you feet" Wrong. Maybe not good for YOUR feet. Don't talk for others.

I'm a project manager for a large remodeling company. Im a carpenter by trade and started working with my dad when I was 10 years old as his apprentice. I was recently picking up materials for a job site and another contractor there saw me in my clean redwings and nicely pressed pants and gave me the "why are you so clean?!" tired old joke. I said because I was dirty for 15 years in this industry so now I don't have to be. 🤷

If it's your style, the northwest makes some of the best work boots around in my opinion.

I think the information is presented great! I love how you mentioned it's not really for a job site but you did mention blue collar people talking about getting dirty and sweaty to measure work ethic, which is 100% true. At the same time I don't know most people, even the licensed plumbers per say that make $50 plus an hour who would buy these boots because of cost. This is a stereotype for sure as I do know a lot of Sneakerheads pay crazy amount of money for sneakers. To be fair none are blue collar works, So it would be interesting to see who the customer demographics are for these boots. I say this as I and others would save for a year to get a nice pair of Red Wings when they are starting out at an apprentice and/or school level when in theory you would need the better boot as you are doing 80% of the work, at least all the grunt work.

I hope your right. I have worn redwings for at least a dozen years buying 7 pairs. I have usually bought “work” boots but recently purchased a pair of Iron Rangers. During the break in process staples came through the insoles in both boots. No response from the customer service email/phone so I returned them. It is my belief that red wing is cutting quality to make a few extra pennies. Giving Nicks a chance.

If you hold a photo of the iron ranger next to the Americana you will see, aside from thicker leather, that the iron ranger has a thin welt and a thin rubber sole while the Americana has a thicker leather welt, more leather and then a thicker rubber sole. But all of this aside... the Americana is $200 more than the iron ranger. That’s tough to swing. Especially considering being able to nab iron ranger 2nds for $179-$200. So does it “slay” the iron ranger? I think it needs to be near the same price point to so that doesn’t it?

The crappy combat boots I wore for years (28, US Army, infantry) resulted in fallen arches. All I ask of any footwear these days is comfort, and no arch support, or it will result in severe pain. I have found the Thorogood 8" or Red Wing 8" moc toe work for me. That soft sole is comfy. The harder the sole, the greater the foot and back pain for me. I also get my boots resoled on time and I get three or four resoles before retirement of the boot. As for what someone wears, hey, wear what makes YOU happy. Life is short. When you sit down to have a beer at the bar with me I am not going to mention your boots. Why? I don't pay for them so I figure you wear what you like, what feels good, what you can afford? Some guys go a lifetime trying to find a favorite. That WAS me. I found something that works for my foot.

I love my nick’s boots. I got the falcons in burgundy and I just ordered another pair. Rangers in chocolate. I do see a pair of builder pro’s in black for next year.

Sorry I need to disagree with you. I would agree the Nicks is likely better made and probably more comfortable. That said, I feel the Iron Ranger looks better. These Nick’s almost look like a woman’s boot. You say the Red Wing looks clownish? It looks like a man’s work boot. That all said, Nick’s makes some seriously manly boots. Just not this pair. Their fireman boots are manly AF.

absolutely love the look of this boot in fact putting it on my lists to get. I was wondering have you looked into Drews boots they make work and cowboy boots they have also caught mu eye?

Being retired military, I have to say, the numerous types of boots I wore were far more comfortable and durable than all the stuff I’ve worn since. The military, and as an extension, boots you highlight, cause less foot problems.
