You caught the axial matron because the fish got infected by the ooze in your cargo hold. When a fish gets infected, there's a small chance for it to become an aberration. As for other things... while the five points on your map each mark the last location of a lost cargo ship, the crates from their wrecks may drift with the currents to linger nearby. Look around, there's a lot of them for if you need them. Easier on the inventory than crafting them from spare parts, though the ability to set up flotsam traps for said materials might be useful. Check them out. Talk to people. They've always got something interesting to say, and often their dialogue changes with events. The menus are far mor streamlined than you realize. You can swap between your cargo and storage in most menus, and any attached net you have, rather than having to back out and retrieve it from the storage menu specifically. And if you try to place something where there's no room, you'll pick up what was in the way - provided only one item was blocking it - to more easily shuffle things around. Makes placing big stuff in your hold much easier.

Oh dang! Still Wakes the Deep vibes happening here with the rig. Which kinda.... makes a lot of sense given that Dredge is also weird cthonic deep beasties.
