Note - PC Principal calls Miles "Black Spider-Man," but Kyle and Stan call him "Miles Morales." PC Principal doesn't value him as a character beyond "diversity," while Kyle and Stan (often the voices of the show) value him as his own character with his own narrative.

@@alyssapinon9670 Yep. And using his name (Miles Morales) also allows Kyle and Stan/Matt and Trey to make their point absolutely clear to anyone who has an ounce of media literacy - they don't have a problem with diverse characters, or even diverse legacy characters, but taking an existing character (Cartman, often the voice of values opposed to the show, such as censorship, racism, and authoritarianism) and "putting a black woman in it" is just lazy.

Precisely the point. We all love good characters that happen to be black. They’re multifaceted individuals with depth and substance. Not black characters designed to fill a diversity quota and recite woke’ism like an NPC drone substitute for the writer.

I feel like it would be comical in a fucked up way if every character who were CHANGED to be a minority get BETTER representation than those who were ORIGINALLY a minority, considering that most fandoms would change a popular character’s race, sexuality, gender identity, disability, etc, and the characters that canonically fit any of these categories ends up pushed to the side for the headcanons. Got nothing against headcanons, but find this trend a little weird.

I'm so glad shows like South Park still exist. An elephant in the room: celebs like Zegler, the Kardashians alongside with these 'insta-fame-vain' people should've never been celebrated in the first place. An over privileged douchebags already famous, being promoted even further by other over privileged companies like Vogue, GQ, Jimmy Fallons of the world etc. 'look what's in my bag a brand new iPhone.' That level of vanity is obscene. The same people who, back in the day, considered anyone who was computer savvy or a gamer, or had a Myspace profile to be 'a loser'. Before they started to use these platforms to make money and share their vanity with the world and destroy self-esteem of others. I have a voice acting background and remember fighting preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. I know all too well how impossible it was to even book an audition - that's why I sound maybe too bitter and biased. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in those new Resident Evil games :)

South park killed it with the diversity absurdity in the media. They also did well to emphasize how pandering is different from actual representation. Also the fact the characters are exactly the same either in their normal form or in their multiverse form just goes to emphasize more the lazy approach that's behind pandering. Cartman is an asshole in both his male and female version exactly because nothing changes for him. Same as with token characters in comics, movies etc that are copies of existing characters with changed race, gender etc.
@Ashbrash1998

Is that because it's lazy or because they both serve the same role in the story? We had Nick Fury a white guy, be portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson a black man. Besides the benefit of having good films with his character (maybe not now lol) the character wasn't dependent on being a certain race to serve his role. His goal was to be the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., to bring the Avengers together and have a past service record of being a spy and such.

@@Ashbrash1998 i agree the point was the show that gender swapped or not they serve the same role in the story. and they did it very faithfully to the original. they could have made the diverse universe not funny they took a lot of effort to make it as fun as the OG south park universe.
@magnusprime962

@@Ashbrash1998Part of the reason Sam Jackson plays Fury in the movies is because they were contractually obligated to cast him. When they first made the Ultimate universe comics back in the early 2000s they negotiated a deal with him that they could use his likeness for the Ultimate universe Fury provided he got to play the character in any movies. Of course that clause was one everyone was happy to agree to because he’s a great fit for the character. Everybody won in that deal.

Like I said, it was only rumors but the only source I found contrary is just the director tweeting that it wasn't true, even though he later admitted that at least he showed it to Spielberg 7 times. This is also the same guy that lied that there wouldn't be time travel when the initial alleged leaks about the plot came out. It's also convenient that the alleged leak said that the movie would end with time traveling to the siege of Syracuse just like what happened in the movie, with Indy already dying from a bullet wound beforehand. The only difference is that in the leak Indy asks to die there and is left behind and in the movie he asks to die but is knocked out and the movie cuts to the present to awkwardly give him a happy ending. Like I said, it's all rumors, but I will trust the feds before I trust anything that someone in Hollywood says at face value.

They just used that as a 'stand in character for the beating' because they needed a character to play with and Kathleen Kennedy IS a funny choice. They did this for 2 reasons: When Cartman says Kathleen Kennedy, it just sounds funny and because she has single handed taken two franchises we all loved in, at the very least, the wrong direction. South Park does this alot...they have just chosen random villains as a stand in for a more widespread issue. EDIT - the middle rounding in this one is the best reminder of why South Park is so timeless. It makes fun of both sides, every time, and people who get so worked up over fucking bullshit.

South Park’s satire often operates as a Rorschach test - different audiences interpret the target of the satire differently. But interpreting it along the lines of “anything that bothers Cartman must not be being critiqued because Cartman is bad” is as simplistic as it’s opposite - the people who don’t get that the “Kathleen Kennedy as supervillain” mindset is also being satirised. Shallow, lazy, “Diversity”, as it is pracised by the likes of Disney, is absolutely the primary target of satire here.

@pap64
@pap64 Жыл бұрын
In an odd way, I am happy that Matt and Trey went forward with this special knowing full well how ridiculous the culture wars have become to the point where satire mocking anyone participating in either narrative is weaponized to drive harmful rhetoric towards specific groups of people. And people on both sides saying that the special is talking about a specific side forget that South Park has ALWAYS been about dunking on both sides, sometimes to great effect and other times not quite sticking the landing. The Family Guy episodes is a great example of that; clearly they wore their hatred of the show on their sleeves and nothing was censored. They went for the kill every time they could to the point that the Family Guy staff couldn't ignore it. And yet in the same episodes they said that Family Guy still has value for some and that it shouldn't be censored or have its staff receive threats from anyone. Same goes with the "Passion of the Jew" episode; they legit showed the three sides regarding the "Passion of the Christ" argument with Cartman being the extreme fanatic that took the film as a call to action against Judaism, Kyle feeling ashamed of his Jewish faith due to the violence portrayed in the film, and Stan and Kenny just being indifferent about it all, even if the show went out of its way to paint Mel Gibson as being a nutjob. So even if within the storyline you can see Matt and Trey quietly state their piece, they still make sure that all sides are equally mocked. So this special would be nothing new if it wasn't for the culture war that now has made it impossible to discuss film and TV without people worrying if its woke or not. Just watch South Park be watched through a 'woke" lense one of these days...

The problem is that they put diverse people to excuse the bad writing, plot, pacing and even action. And if you call their movies bad for those reasons, then they call you all sorts of isms and phobes. The changing of established characters to diverse versions of themselves is not the core issue, it would be a minor annoyance if the movies themselves were good.

I have to disagree on one thing. I love Miles Morales, but he doesn’t count as a “character who change diversity” and works. He’s a legacy character, a character who take up the mantle after his mentor dies or retire (Kate Bishop, Falcon, and ironically, Captain Marvel) If anything, Nick Fury counts more in that subject because he was white in the majority of the comic and only became African American in the Ultimate Comic which later came into the MCU Helps his name isn’t even Peter Parker, he’s Miles Morales. A whole different character and personality

@@Johnny2Cellos I had the same thought - the Cartman version of Kennedy was funny, but wasn't a good parody of Disney execs. Disney execs seem scared to put gay main characters in their movies (probably because movies with gay characters get banned in places like China, the Middle East, and some theaters in the Southern US). It would have been more on point if the alt-world Cartman was a leftist influencer on Twitter who demanded that every movie have a gay female lead. Maybe the alt world Cartman could even send Kennedy 10,000 letters as well

@@Johnny2Cellos But the reason why it was neccesary is because both sides have echo chambers and the thing is that many leftists echo chambers will blindly defend any Disney movie that tries to pander, even if they criticize the company for some reason they will defend it, just as there are echo chambers on the right too that always criticize Disney. As such it makes sense to not take a stand ¿why would you sympathize with an echo chamber?

The funny thing is, as horrible as Cartman is (and is obviously meant to be), Matt and Trey have in the past said that they liked to use Cartman as a way to express a lot of their opinions on pop culture. Sadly, just because he made a few good points about Family Guy’s writing being lazy, a lot of people seem to think he’s also right to be a monstrous bigot. I guess good role models are hard to find.

I always like to ask the self proclaimed “South Park Conservatives”: Eric Cartman. The protagonist or antagonist of South Park? Good guy or bad guy? If your comparing yourself to him, and the creators have been on record saying he’s a straw man parody of an asshole, what does that say about you? I know the actual politics of Matt and Trey are often debated about, but you don’t have to align with any particular politics to understand when someone is creating satire, which is what South Park does 99% of the time. I’m convinced at this point that most conservatives have little to no media literacy. They just take everything at face value and roll with it. Fallout isn’t a series about the horrors of what late stage capitalism will do to America, it’s about shooting dudes in power armor, bro. Bioshock isn’t a scathing criticism of Ayn Rand and libertarianism, it’s about zapping guys with lightning hands, man! This is the world we inhabit. Everything designed to be an ocean is seen as a puddle.
