Love the sound of those traction motors and the clicking of the RPA... the whine of the compressors.... I drove these in the 80s when they brought a couple of units back to the Northern line. Wonderful machines... I may even take a trip down there for “one last ride” . They look kinda bare inside being minus the original arm rests and hanging straps.
@peeky44
@peeky44 3 жыл бұрын
When they came to the Isle of Wight around 1990 they still had arm-rests! They were retained when refurbished by NetworkSouthEast and sported bright red NSE covers. They only got removed around 2007 when the moquette also changed from NSE to the recent A-stock version, and the outsides were painted back into LT red.

I rode on these trains many time between Kilburn Park and Willesden Junction in the 1970's . I think that they went out of service in the 1980's. The date of the carriage (1938) and maker was shown on a plate across the threshold of each then double doors. The interior had a varnished wood trim which was very classy. I notice however that in the carriage that you travelled the leather arm rests had been removed from the long bench seats. These were quite important on London Transport back in the day as they ensured that each seated passenger had their own bit of space This meant that eye contact with other persons either sitting alongside or opposite was not only unnecessary it could be actively discouraged. I suppose these days the same effect has been achieved with invention of the Apple phone.

When my wife and I were first courting, we visited my cousin in Netley (Hampshire) and went over to the Isle of Wight for a few days booking into the Esplanade Hotel Ryde IOW. We went by rail to the Cinema in Lake to view 'Schindler's List' and mentioned the reason for our journey to the guard. After the show (which overran slightly) we also, in turn, had to run to Lake station so as to catch the last train back to Ryde. We were three minutes late but the train was still there, waiting for us. A similar thing happened with the last ferry across the Medina from our East Cowes restaurant to connect with the last West Cowes ferry to Southampton. Sadly, such days (when people look out for one another) seem to have long gone

@@blisswest Thanks: I'm a supporting member of that Steam Railway recalling some thirty years. Also a shareholder in the Steam Packet Company that operated Red Funnel (taken over by ABP). When 16/17, my cousin and I were back and forth Southampton to Cowes Saturday afternoons. Carisbrooke Castle was rear deck flush with stern adjacent to the all day bar (bottle beer Strong and Co of Romsey, before Whitbread took over). Similarly Southern Vectis Bus Company: I used to attend their AGM in Newport before they were also bought out. Goodness, this video takes me back to summers holidays as a youngster back in the early '70s. We always took the train from Rye Harbour to Sandown. Even back then those tube carriages seemed vintage. I remember the local lads at Sandown used to wait outside the station with their self made rickety wooden go-karts to assist passengers with their luggage for a penny or two. Great video.

Lovely video. I has been there once (daytrip) during a holiday in London and it was awesome to experience the ancient railway atmosphere and the old tube-trains on the isle. Pitty that these trains are not be in service anymore next year. But for the people on the isle it will be very good news that modernisation of the line and modern somewhat larger trains are finally on their way now. As I did understand that right: the line for a long time was serious candidate for closure, so there could not have been a better outcome. Hopefully they are keeping one of the old units in operating condition for special rides. It is so special that this 1938 stock is still in daily service now.....

I remember travelling on the 1926 stock trains when I was young. Everyone was disappointed when they were replaced by the “modern” 1938 stock in the 1980s. Incidentally the IOW Steam Railway has steam engines that are newer than the 1938 tube stock! The railways on the island have always used second hand trains. When they received coaches from the mainland the toilets were removed. The main reason was the source of freshwater for the island was beneath the tunnel at Ventnor so they couldn’t risk the toilets being used in the tunnel-No such thing as retention toilets then.

I'm a big fan of function, and I'm quite happy with leaving my WiFi and internet behind me for a short journey like this. I like these old underground carriages.

This clip makes up for my not getting to the Isle of Wight on my big trip two years ago. While I missed the 1938 stock, I managed several rides on 1972 Bakerloo Stock while I was based in Kenton for nine nights. My first tube experience was the clockwork orange in Glasgow at the start of my UK Trip. Must get around to watching more of your playlist but as I type this 'Chairman Dan' (Victorian State Premier down here in Aus) is telling us on television how long our current COVID lockdown will continue (at least two more weeks). It's a beautiful spring day (Sunday 6th Sept), Fathers' Day, and I have yet to go out for my permitted daily exercise to the local park for permitted distance socialisation and doggy socialisation. Great to see you are able to travel under certain conditions. Stay safe and note I have posted a comment on your 40000 followers Q/A post in the last hour. Cheers from Michael.

Thanks for sharing the video, I was brought up in London as a young child I so remember the smells ,and sounds of this old rolling stock, and like someone said on here previously the long grab Handles - and also wooden floors and big bulbs for lighting!

Wow, thank you for the video 1. I didn’t know subway cars were used for commuter trains. 2. Look at those wooden window frames. That is amazing.

You forgot to mention the tube stock is actually older than 2mt Ivatts steam locos on the Havenstreet heritage line. Its been sad watching the slow deterioration of the service over the years. I remember watching the trials of the tube stock when they ran up down the line for the first time, so exciting and 'modern' compared to steam. I hope the Epping line can preserve a couple of coaches.

Thanks, Dylan! If I expected this !!! A train dating from 1938, you realize. I can't believe it myself. What a fantastic experience you must have had, a real treat for a train enthusiast like me or you or the other fans. I love it, real memories in your head !!! What beautiful stations, what a beautiful route, what a beautiful train. You're right, it looks like a metro. We used to build things well before too ... even though there weren't all the modern comforts. Thanks again to you!

While it's a shame for those of us who take these trains once in a blue moon, the new trains will undoubtedly provide a much better service to those who use it regularly.

In 1986 I took a journey on this line documenting the last days of the even-older LT ‘Standard Stock’ which dated from the 1920’s. It was a really bone-shaking ride!

Yes, and in those days there was an electric tram which ran just from the pier head to the esplanade for those passengers who were not going further than Ryde on the train.

Dylan, you find quite a variety of trains to ride and entertain us with! The rolling stock and the line itself are anachronistic. How amusing that the single platform in Shanklin is marked as Track 1, as if there could be any confusion. You were wise to show travel in this direction, as the ride on the pier was a great conclusion. In three years, when I'm 64, maybe I'll rent a cottage on the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear. Thanks again.

I live in Lake on the Island and It was nice seeing this. I'm surprised that how you can now connect and change over to our Steam Train in Brading was not mentioned. . We have been told we could get some new trains soon. New. . Don't think so. . lol. . There was no Train Station in Lake when I was younger. This Train track from Shanklin to Ryde Pier Head Is the only bit left as the trains did run all over the Island Many Many Many Years ago. " Before My time ".

Not very comfortable for twice daily commute if you use them daily, but a fun and bouncy short ride for the tourists during the summer. Beautiful countryside! Sadly these trains have been allowed to degrade externally in the last ten years meaning water getting in the roof and window, but being about 80 years old they've survived remarkably and has had a long history. Shame their upkeep has been laxing. Winter weather and exposure doesnt help when considering these were built for the London Underground. The new stock from the late 1970s era will be a refreshing change and something fun!

You missed showing the stop at Brading with the signal box and heritage centre together with the stop at Smallbrook Junction that links to the IoW steam railway. Also, the line used to run as far as Ventnor until 1966. There is lot of history to the line that make it worth traversing. The stretch between Ryde and Barding is like a ride at Alton tours as the train bounces along at 45mph.
