Anyone who isn't born here but moves here and sticks it out for all the good and the bad then, you are a Newfoundlander, through and through. If you have/do these things like us then that's what makes us, US. (well most of us lol) *Firstly, and most important* *-A deep, undying love for this Rock that we call Newfoundland* *Then* -A cast-iron will. -Hatred for our own weather. -Not moving because of said weather. -Always trying to be considerate and friendly to strangers (most times lol). These few things are our just some of what makes up a Newfoundlander but if you can check each of those off your list then, by God me ol' trout, you are a true blue Newfoundlander b'y Oh, also on pronouncing Newfoundland, our most common way is Newf-in-land but please don't pronouce it New-fin-lind or New-found-lind because no joke many of us, well we hate when our Island's name is pronouced wrong, especially on T.V. lol Sorry for the long message, but I love talking about this place lol.

To OP - Not knowing the past history wouldn't help, and like @spandyandy1 said it's not a geographical thing, it's a cultural/societal thing, and when you don't know any of the history, you wouldn't even be able to understand the reasons why.

Imho, the word has bad connotations and history, but just like that other derogatory "N" word for black people, they took over the word as their own, so us Newfoundlanders can use "Newfie" and still have pride in our rock, and all we stand for... Although, I myself tend not to use it, I won't say other Newfoundlanders can't and that they don't have pride in Newfoundland because of using it

Some Newfies learn the Irish language at MUN uni but our own dialect of the Irish language called Gaeilge Thalamh an Éisc died out a long time ago. There is not much written about it but it seems to have resembled Munster Irish. Newfoundland Irish was at one point the main language of the predominately Irish areas of this province notably the south east Avalon. Sadly we are taught nothing about how the Irish came to Newfoundland, the reasons for it and the hardships they endured.

I was born and raised in Ontario but I love the idea of going to newfoundland and they are super nice too it's not a fake stereotype
