This is actually really important stuff you are uploading here. Thank you so much. Your literally showing my childhood. If you ever do round Bow Roman road I would be crying my eyes out. This area was the other side of my family. Makes me laugh the Bow side had a cheek to look down on this side of the family. They were all such good people I wish people truly knew how special we had it. We didn't have much but we really looked after each other because we knew we had to after the war.

The before images were "my" London. It may not have been as "nice" as it is now. But it was where I felt at home. I no longer feel at home in London.

You are to be congratulated and thanked for this fascinating "then and now" depiction of the Isle of Dogs. It is a valuable sociaol document in its own right. As a young Met. Police PC stationed at Limehouse Police Station from 1963-1969, I walked its streets when it was part of Limehouse sub-division, with its own small police station at the far end opposite Greenwhich Naval College. At that time, the docks lay within the boundaires of West Ferry Road > Manchester Road and comprised of just TWO "beats" basically splitting the Island in half for foot patrol purposes, with the Port of London Authority police supervising the docks themselves. Many's the time I walked its streets, day and night, before the advent of the Canary Wharf developments. Fascinating to note that at least some of the pubs survived - no doubt welcome with so much new housing taking place.

Yes very interesting film footage. It was interesting to see @ 12:29 on the left film there was a London black cab and at the same time on the right screen (present) there was an Uber cab almost at the same spot where the black cab parked in 1995. 😀 a sign that times has moved on and unfortunately black cabs are not doing well anymore which very unfortunate.
@ConMaloney5 жыл бұрын
4pple - very observant! The black cab in the earlier film belonged to the guy who made the film!

So interesting! I've got a photo I took of Tobago Street when I was at art college from maybe 1998 and I always wondered what it looked like now. I have to say I miss the old London, although I was only 15 when the first video was made.
@ConMaloney10 ай бұрын
Thanks, Tom! Tobago Street was one of the first three residential streets on the Island. Originally called Cross Street, it connected Robert and Alfred Streets, later renamed Cuba and Manilla Streets.

this was my playground in the mid to late fifties ( I lived in Alpha Grove) it was quiet at weekends but came alive during the week with the docks, factories and wharfs. I went to school at St. Lukes, next to John Lenanton's, all my family and relations lived in this area all through the war and most worked in the local factories and docks. The area was not very posh but there was a good community, the place seemed to have a soul then, unlike now it is up market and expensive with no tangible spirit, but I guess that is progress

Must have taken some work, nice one. Not a bad camera for 1995 either, was it a massive JVC one resting on your shoulder?! Lol

Nah. The ones for £170 were the cheapest ones, the blocks adjacent the street. Now those flats are worth about 500,000.

Shame it's jumpy, i should've got someone to push me in a pram or shopping trolley.It was slightly easier to do the old filming because those big camcorders rested on your shoulder....by the time i'd finished the new film with my hand held one, my arm was really aching.

I don't regard 1995 as being very long ago, although I was only 16 at the time. I was already using the internet in 1995 for example, and using Apple Macintosh laptops. For me personally, it has to be earlier than about 1980 to get that "old-fashioned" feeling.

Nice idea but holy f**k, I found this to be totally unwatchable... Both halves of the screen bouncing around/going left and right at different times, means that despite my interest to see the big changes that happened over the years, I absolutely have no interest in continuing as it's making my head hurt..!!!
@ConMaloney11 ай бұрын
Give him a break - he’s trying to film and match the new scenes with one hand while watching the old one in the other! We only have this record because he had the foresight to film it thirty years when no-one else could be arsed.
@iboyd282411 ай бұрын
@@ConMaloney It's a great idea, but poorly executed and gave me a headache. It would have been better to play a 1995 clip on the left side first, then pause it and play the equivalent 2013 clip on the right side (and so on and so forth) - rather than having both clips bouncing up and down at different rates - I don't know about your eyes, but mine happen to work in unison, not individually. Call it constructive criticism if you will, I'm not being a c*nt. Playing both clips simultaneously is a proper headf**k.
