The Israeli Way of Doing Business - Interview with Oxford Professor Derek J. Penslar

KNOWLEDGE@WHARTON ARCHIVES: Does ethnicity influence economics? Knowledge at Wharton investigates this issue with Derek Penslar, professor of Israel Studies at Oxford University and also professor of Jewish History at the University of Toronto. He has written a book about the history of the Jewish people and the group’s strong association with commerce, Shylock’s Children: Economics and Jewish Identity in Modern Europe. Penslar argues that there is no monolithic “Jewish economy.” Rather, certain forms of economic behavior persisted throughout the Jewish world that tended to repeat themselves in many situations, enhanced by a sense of unity among Jews from different regions.

If you read the Quran (I've only read a few chapters, not to pretend to be an expert) you'll see that economic engineering was a part of Middle Eastern thinking outside of the Jewish community over a thousand years ago. Teaching your people not to spend money with certain communities because when they have money and Muslims had resources they wouldn't buy them from Muslims and that would be bad for their community. When you look at the Bible's edict not to wear mixed fabrics, this was a sign of decadence or waste back then, because the Jews were not the community producing these mixed fabrics that were in the markets, so it was seen as a waste of money. People think it's just an arbitrary religious rule, but it was community economics. Kwanzaa, the African-American holiday that no one celebrates is about community organization. The days are about teaching community building (Black unity, self-determination, community service, cooperative economics, etc...) When you're a stateless nation for so long in a mercantile civilization, you learn how your community gains wealth and loses it, because you don't have the myths of your own innate superiority and propaganda created commodity fetishism hiding the economy from you. The Jewish community take care of their community and take care of their business and businesses. That's the *correct* way of doing business.

What is the word used for the mitzva based on a #Torah verse to give preference to a Jew over a non-Jew ? The word for a person should strive to give preference to doing business sending/receiving money with another Jew. This is the key process how #Jewish people #united transfer money under the table without traceability. For example, I call my cousin in #Israel tell him John is landing tonight give him $1,000,000 he has paid me here in #America and my cousin and I will settle the books between ourselves without Internal Revenue Service #income #tax knowing.

Excellent. When the focus is on power and success, money and its acquisition supersede culture and ethnicity. If the ones that stay on top of the mountain are of a certain ethnicity, then their ethnicity becomes the target of their jealousy because of the tendency to absolutize a lie as a method to "dethrone" them. Therefore, economically thinking, I believe it is best for Americans to leave the "Keynesian playground" and return to real money, gold, and silver, in order for there to be an equal competitive "ethnicity." The "trap" to thinking success is because of a certain ethnicity will be held in abeyance. In other words, no more "Rothschild central bank dominance in the West."

I’m an Indian and my family is in the diamonds business. If you anything about the diamonds business, you’d know what this means. I can offer an easy explanation of the Jewish way of business. It’s the strong desire for material success. It’s very strong for various reasons, cultural, historical, familial etc but it’s very strong attachment for material success. For Indians (non abhramic faiths) material success is always secondary karma, moksha from birth to death remain primary, permanently from one generation to another.

I think part of why Israel is so successful is because they fully utilise an asset that most countries in the world do not. Women. Women are more equal to men in Israel than in any other country on Earth. women are fully capable, physically and mentally, to be as productive as men. A major factor in Jewish economics over history was that Jews were prevented from owning land and were very limited on what they were allowed to do. Prior to Jewish exile from Israel, Jews were into farming. That all changed in exile. If you look at many Laws in the Bible that pertain to economics, you'll see the focus on farming issues, like tithing of produce, etc.

Although I understand this point of view, and even agree with it, it's still makes most Jews feel uncomfortable when people use stereotypes about Jews. Karl Marx said, "the only God Jews have is money". Such stereotypes about Jews have made Jews a target throughout the ages, and they are still a target today. Israel's economic success can be explained through Jewish and Israeli history. But the economic situation of Jews wasn't always good. Most Jews in the 18th through 20th century lived in total poverty in Russia & America.

you mean exactly like any other enthnic group favoures doing business with their own? If people would learn from their mistakes instead of blaming it on the jews they would be a lot more prosperous but I guess it's always easier to blame someone else for your own mistakes

It would be nice to hear about the ages old Jewish lenders connected to the fallen.roman empire...which influenced Shakespeare's merchant of venice....and the empire they maintained throughout a large portion of europe and asia... without firing a shot....lending money with interest was forbidden by the ancient books of the christains and moslem religious sects....leaving the early jews at that time of eastern Europe and how they still through their lending practices moved their operations to england and the Netherlands....later to wall street....touching on their revolutionary ideas is a good start....but their economic practices back millenniums...and has led us to the financial chaos we see today....there are wonderful contributions they made in the arts and entertainment areas.... although much has been subject to corruption....I truly wish that when mentioning the jewish holucast that other genocides would be included....the once oppressed Jewish population of europe has led in a large part to the oppression they perpetrate in their illegal land settlements in Palestine and how the idf form of police brutality is taught to western police forces such as seen in the george floyd neck/choke tactic...the reach 9f the hard core eastern European Jewish leadership in isreal has tenacles around the world....not such a positve influence to say the minimum...why the US continues to throw 4 billion in their support is unconsciousable as the economy in isreal is in the black and offer free medical and higher education....but some are now connecting the dots....seems the non semetic leadership is worsening the narrative #the once oppressed have become the oppressor...deep dive this ancient origin of jewish business practice i# lord balfour declaration... cheers from Mexico

European sensibilities have shaped Israel, but scholars seem to dote on Ashkenazim as the root of all Israeli socio-economic history (3:50). When discussing the historical impact of Jewish culture, they often overlook Sephardim, and altogether dismiss Mizrahim and Ethiopian Jews ("Beta Israel'). Perhaps this is because a euro-centric caste system thrives in Israel, and Sephardim, Mizrahim and Ethiopian Jews remain disproportionately underrepresented in government. Yes, there presently exists some "embarrassment" in talking about the relationship between Israeli culture and intra-state economics (14:15).

For all the people on the earth. Question. You’re innovative thinker. But there’s diaspora and ties in the world. Would you be open to make business with everyone or only with a diaspora. So there should be competition of diasporas? This is the point the world should be open for everyone; no matter his origin, but who he is. That’s not the case. You can be talented innovative etc, but you’re not in the “club”.

It always amazes me how Americans or other European scholars say "Jew" and mean just an "Ashkenazi" (German/European/East-European) Jew - completely forgetting the Jews of the islamic world (and beyond). They took major economic roles in their diaspora and were very different in that - they often COULD OWN LAND or at least - own land-related agricultural enterprises - from small home-farms to huge fields of rice and wheat in Iraq. These jews are completely neglected, although their impact on both economy and history is huge (The greatest jewish banker - was not Rothchild, but a Syrian jew - the Safra family). I think any discussion of Jewish "Economy" that doesn't include analysis of these jews (which are the big majority ofJews in Israel too) -- is far from satisfactory.
