Still remember when the cute concept was over saturated? I'm not surprised its also happening to girl crush and teen crush. After some years... Probably two to four years, it will decrease and a new concept will take over then become over saturated. I feel like elegance or futuristic concept will become the new concept then will be used to an extreme extent just like the previous counter parts. History repeats itself.

Also the sexy concept around 2013 that literally almost every girl group tried back then
@srinthebean4 жыл бұрын
Actually, I feel like maybe the technology/futuristic concept will take over. For example, AleXa (soloist, AMAZING artist who is an all rounder, check her out, she was on Produce 101 and is half Korean, half Russian) chose a futuristic/revolutionary concept, and she suits it so well, but she didn’t choose it because it may have been the next big thing. Also, SM’s new girl group, æspa did debut with an avatar/futuristic concept so I feel like it could be more of that, but an elegant concept is also rising. Or, a retro concept, like Dynamite, I Can’t Stop Me, MAGO, etc. Also, funk such as Everglow’s LA DI DA is growing, too. I feel like teenage and tough or revolutionary concepts are really in style, along with retro and funky concepts.

I feel like EVERGLOW actually has a different take on girl crush. Yes, there’s the whole edm chorus for their past releases but it isn’t generally annoying. What I hate about K-Pop songs with edm beat drop choruses is that they try to make it stand out and sound different from the other verses wherein EVERGLOW gives you a taste of the melody from the beginning, the NANANANAs in the beginning of Bon Bon Chocolat, the whistle version of the melody for Adios, a short version of Dun Dun’s beat drop chorus, and the La-Di-Da-La-Di-Da echoes from La Di Da’s chorus. And it never goes away, it’s in the background which makes their songs sound complete and coherent. And they also have a really confusing storyline which is very underrated. And their songs aren’t the normal “We’re girls, we do what we want.” message in their songs. Bon Bon Chocolat - Achieving your dreams, escaping the doubts you have trapped yourself in. Adios - Saying goodbye to the people who are stopping you from discovering your true self. Dun Dun - How young people should not be just chalked up to inexperienced just because they are young. The youth today are smarter, stronger more united. La Di Da - It’s marketed as your standard Fuck-The-Haters song. But when you analyze it, the phrase ‘this song is a warning to our haters’ become sadder and darker. It’s about how hating on other people can destroy you, how it can destroy other people. You begin to lose yourself with all this hate in your life. So yeah, I’m really excited where EVERGLOW takes their concept in the future!

i mean, are we surprised? this is exactly what happened after girls' generation released gee and oh! these songs became so huge that everyone flocked to copy cute, bubbly concepts, and then it became such a norm that people got tired of it. i'm seeing so many people getting tired of this concepts, and it's at all not surprising to me considering the huge success blackpink has had with their girl crush concept, and the incredible performance of red velvet's bad boy in early 2018. you can basically trace this back to late 2017 to early 2018. furthermore, we all know k-pop is constantly keeping an eye on what the west market is making succesful and trying to build on that too. dua lipa's future nostalgia and the weeknd's after hours have had such gigantic success at the start of the year that every recording company around the globe has been jumping on the retro trend ever since, and of course k-pop companies would follow suite, with its own twist, of course. boy groups are equally as guilty, though. how many "badass" boy come backs and debuts have we had in the last couple of years? audiences are obviously growing bored of it, though. so i predict k-pop will change it's tune in the upcoming months, especially considering all the retro concepts popping up right now.

if i am going to be honest, i do feel like the industry has been oversaturated with new groups. i can't even keep up.. concept-wise though, there was a lot of girl crush and mature styles. and from new gg's and bg's, it's been exactly that :( i can't help but want something different but this happens pretty often. for example being retro, when NATURE (they're rlly amazing!) came out with their new song, I was like "I want more mature, retro, 2nd gen type concepts!" because they pretty much nailed it and then BOOM, the retro came in with many songs following and while I enjoyed it! it just became it bit overdone.. it's like trends being repeated over and over, just with different melodies.. which i don't mind either but i think y'all got my point!

I’m gonna keep saying this, Weeekly was a breathe of fresh air! I love the fact that they’re doing the cute, school concept while still dressing appropriate for their age. The idols in these new girl groups are mostly teenagers, while I understand dressing in crop top and short skirts, but there are some perverted people who fetishize these young idols which is so unnecessary and uncalled for. I still remember when I was in high school, Twice just debuted and I was the same age as the maknaes (Tzuyu and Chaeyoung). It was quite uncomfortable hearing people calling the girls “sexy” and “hot” even though they were literally teenagers! This can even be seen now with ITZY’s Yuna. I just wish some people wouldn’t be so disgusting and call them vulgar things, they’re young girls.

Yeah and people were literally bashing YG For not debuting Blackpink in their Teen age. Bc they'll grow older and look less attractive. Like bruhhh, ppl just want body and face beauty. I know everyone hates YG bc of many reasons. But I really appreciate that their not forcing Blackpink to attract people by showing their body. But everyone is also saying that icecream has quite sexual meaning. But it was produced by Western artists. And we all know Western culture.

i completely agree, like apart from weeekly (who are, tbh, the standout debut of this year to me) and the odd outlier all of the most recent gg debuts have kind of blended together for me - which is a shame because when stuff like that happens people don't really care to look any further and a lot of the time some genuinely outstanding gems of talent hidden under all the neon. but it reaches a point where a mv thumbnail looks like something ive seen before or all of the teaser images are just redos of something thats already been done, so much so that i dont even really look forward to new gg debuts anymore bc i know what to expect

Something that I see coming: groups are going to take on more the retro vibe vibe. Now it has been done for some groups: Twice (I Can't Stop), Everglow (LA DI DA), JYP (When We Disco and Fever), Seventeen (HOME;RUN) and I see a little bit in STAYC (So Bad) It is true that a lot of female groups are using a similar concept (neon/shiny colours, animation, street outfits combined with some formal elements, etc), and it's kind of hard to tell what makes each group unike. Yesterday, Aespa and Bling Bling debuted. Both had a similar concept, the only difference that comes to my mind right now is that Aespa's MV had some natural elements. Can we also mention how great is the fact that in both groups none of the members is underaged?! So, if in the future they decide to go for a sexy concept It won't be hella awkward like other cases. I feel that they will be more prepared and stronger to face negative criticism and hate comments

Basically I also dont care if a song is not meaningful because at the end if the day why would I myself care about the meaning if I'm enjoying it? To me it all just FUN songs that brighten up my day.

Same but I don’t think that’s really the main point. I mean yes, please enjoy yourself as much as you can but it has gotten too repetitive. It’s like their design for you to swallow then throw it up. next song. Swallow, throw it up. Gen4 feels like an entire group itself with subunits with how similar they are.

I agree. I keep seeing alot of people say they are getting annoyed with the 4th gen of kpop and that everyone is doing the badass girl crush concepts. But I generally hate cute concepts so this is my jam. And I also tend to dislike chill R&B, slow, ballad, cute or 'light' songs and mainly like songs with hard beatdrops and strong EDM sounds. Also very strong vocals. Like everything itzy came out with so far has been exactly what I like. Mamamoo is my ultimate fav girl group and yeah they arent from the 4th gen but that's the type of vocals that I like. Just lots of belting and loud and strong. I've seen alot of people dislike blackpinks 'How you like that' but personally that's my favorite song by them. Aespas 'Black Mamba' is one of my favorite songs this month. My best example of what I really like is NCT. That type of sound is my favorite And since I dont speak Korean i also dont focus on the meaning so for me the song is supposed to just hype me up and make me wanna dance and sing along. And even if I spoke the language I still dont think I would see the meaning of the lyrics as something that important.

This is how pop music works ever since. Everyone follows the trend set by some group. For this generation Blackpink popularized the badass concept globally (not saying they created this concept), and seeing how popular they've become, other debuting groups follow similar concept or some variation of it. This happened with SNSD in the past where their cutesy concept also gave birth to so many ggs with similar concepts like such as Twice, WJSN, Lovelyz, IOI, Oh My Girl, etc.

This is why I appreciate SM groups so much. SM is always putting out diverse and experimental concepts, they are like a breath of fresh air in this oversaturated industry. Using prompts really effectively and breaking up the choreography between members (ie 3 members will be the focal point while the others get to catch their breath and set up for the next verse). They do use neon but it isnt as sharp and they have a warmth to their videos I also love how weeekly did their school girl concept in tag me - it was fun but not childlike and it respected the school uniform (making them look plausibly like actual uniforms and not just performance pieces (think of itzy's mama stage or blackpink's aiiyl)) also, the group has 7 members and handles it really well without feeling busy or overwhelming (so many 4-5 member rookie ggs ) sorry this is so long but thanks for reading and i hope it all makes sense :)

This applied to boy groups as well as many of them repeat a lot of concepts. However, the one 4th generation boy group that is different in my opinion is Tomorrow X Together. Their concept is quite different, and although they follow a story which could be repetitive, they somehow make their concept whimsical. If you watch some of their music videos, such as 'Can't you see me', it;s quite a dark concept which talks about feeling left out in friendship groups. This group talks about thing that many teens go through, rather than just 'falling in love'. In their most recent comeback, their title track is 'Blue hour' which you should definitely check out but the other song I would recommend from their recent comeback is 'We lost the summer', which talks about the lock down during summer holidays and the feeling that we basically lost the summer in quarantine and how we miss hanging out with our friends & loved ones. Itzy, Everglow, Aespa, Purple Kiss, StayC, Rocket Punch, cignature, secret number, weeekly, cherry bullet, craxy, etc. And majority of them have the 'teen-girl-crush' vibe/concept with a splash of retro/edm/futuristic type sounds. I'm not mad at the companies because I know they're following a trend to make their groups popular but like you said it's over-saturated. On a lighter note, I blame BlackPink (and Itzy lol). They came though dominating 2017-2019 and alot of companies wanted to emulate that same success using that same concept. But anyways I do believe some 4th gen girl groups will move on from the 'crush' concept eventually while other stick to it. Like I see Everglow staying in that crush concept whereas Aespa may eventually be more versatile since that's Sm's style.

I really miss some of the elements of 2nd and 3rd gen kpop! I think the reason why I get somewhat uninterested with 4th gen kpop is that it’s a huge dance competition. What I mean is that suddenly, most groups are heavily influenced by dance and technicality than vocal practices. The whole “girl crush” and “empowerment” doesn’t feel exciting anymore because in my opinion, it feels so overused and I feel no more excitement. In 2nd and 3rd gen, there was a variety of concepts so I always felt surprised when a new song came out! It could range from cute and crazy to cool concepts! Some of the music in 4th gen are amazing and flawless but I miss some of the concepts that we solidified in past generations! This is my opinion! Props to Weeekly and Playm because in fourth gen kpop the group is kind of a breath of fresh air There concept is relatable, there lyrics and music is SO RELATABLE and not a lot of groups go for cute concept in fourth gen Zig zag hits different for me because of the lyrics itself kinda defines my everyday life

I feel bad for the groups that *are* trying new concepts but no one notices them bc their company is much smaller. Like Weki Meki for example. They're always giving us something new and fresh, but bc they come from much smaller company that can't promote them properly, sadly people don't recognize them. Weki Meki gave us *3* comebacks this year, all with different concepts. They definitely deserve more.

Is it too much to ask for a fairy or fantasy concept? IS IT??? Closer, Secret Garden and Fifth Season all by Oh My Girl are the best examples I can think of. Also, songs like Violeta by IZ*ONE or Love Whisper, Time For the Moon Night, Memoria and Fallin Light by GFriend. Throw in Apple in there, too. Or if you wanna go the darker route Girls by Nature or Fly High and You and I by DreamCatcher. Just... songs that give off this magical, mystical feel to them? With a touch of fairy or flower elements and elegance. Or go down the classic horror route of ripped bear plushies and bloody dolls and spiders in glass jars.

Hopefully Purple Kiss is going to be one of the few that will be different, since judging from their pre-debut, they ain't going for bright neon lights with a ton of EDM and might go for alternative/rock, but hey, it's their pre-debut and their maknae has yet to appear because she's on hiatus due to her health...

@optimistic.pessimist4 жыл бұрын
Hm. I see what you mean. But I don’t necessarily think this is a 4th gen problem. Kpop, in general, has a track record of running certain trends into the ground until they’re unlistenable. As someone who has been a kpop fan since late 2018, I noticed that the 2019 trend were beat drop choruses and this year there has been way too many songs that fall under the disco/retro category, especially from 3rd gen. Although this was one of my favorite sounds prior to the trend, I’m almost sick of it now. However I do agree with the vid, I’m just offering the point that all generations face the problem. EDIT: Here is something else I want to say. Kpop is an industry FIRST before it is a music genre. Even more of an industry than western pop is. Groups are specifically created for the intention of making money, even if thats what the idols did not want. Ergo, they do whats popular, they do what sells. I do not know what else you would expect - ESPECIALLY with groups from the Big 3. There are tons of korean artists who do their own thing just for their art, and I would recommend you to check them instead if this bothers you.

ahaha- Ive noticed it too sadly just the saturation in such concepts with this specific theme, but I mean its whats popular rn and they have to take it otherwise if they risk something in debut its either a flop or a bop which sucks now :/ My ultimate girlgroup rn is Gidle for the most part for 4th gen because of how well the group is versatile- noticeably they always are going for different concepts and styles. In which I love Soyeon for doing so, their last comeback was so fun yet sorrowful in terms of lyrics. Growing old being less creative... but I really love it
@kajjafeeluv__7754 жыл бұрын
That’s what makes g-idle successful, same as many groups that has lasted for a very long time. They don’t ride with the wave, they make a splash and create a wave. If your full of potential, people will notice you one way or another. Would you risk longevity to gain attention right away. I see groups like txt who debuted with cute concept and took their time to ride their own wave and discover what’s right for them. I think it would be harder to venture out somewhere when you got famous for one thing.

I don't it's a big issue tbh , they jus need to come up with other concepts rather than always portraying themselves as tough. They are tough , No doubt in that statement but how about showing a soft side or y'know ... Talking about real issues and giving out a meaningful message through a song. I love k-pop and have no problem with any type of song I jus want the idols to be happy with what THEY create

I think this only started after Itzy’s debut. They started this whole weird teen crush trend as you can notice the trend only started after 2019. But now Itzy is venturing into new conceptS while some groups stay dull and dormant in their teen crush concept.

I feel like the only 4th gen girl groups that didn’t debut like this was Loona and IZONE. They are also the only 4th gen that i think has shown the most versatile i mean look at Butterfly to So What and La Vie Rose to Secret Story of Swan. They really proved they can pull off different genres and i think also why they have tons of dedicated fans. It’s really sad also that IZONE is going to disband because their elegant concept is super successful and i’m sure the next fad will be it in ggs just like this edm / girl crush fad rn.

@elizaelise51924 жыл бұрын
doesn't this always happen with every generation in kpop though? 99.9% of the time, these companies only care about earning a lot of money and following trends is the sure way to do that especially if the group comes from a bigger and more established company. both boy groups and girl groups have been doing that for decades. if y'all want some groups with fresh concepts here are some recommendations: loona (every title track literally has a different genre), g-idle, and dreamcatcher (not really 4th gen but still a horribly underappreciated group with fresh concepts)
