Here's the thing though. Edward isn't punished, penalized, or called out for those flaws. If it were other any other character, with the possible exception of Toby, they would be scolded by a passenger, a railway staff member, or the Fat Controller himself.

Edward and Toby are, in my eyes, are the elderly mentors of the main cast. To tell them apart, if a fight breaks out Edward will try to break it up while Toby is placing bets on who wins. If an engine needs to learn a lesson, Edward will figure out how to teach the lesson on the subject’s terms (being straight up or using tricks) while Toby lets the subject make a fool of themselves unless they ask him help.

If you want to give Edward a flaw, a really great example of giving Edward a flaw is the fan made episode “Taking Toby” by Nicco’s Trains, the whole video centers around Edward hearing a conversation between two men planning to taking Toby away which makes Edward extremely worried so he tries to warn Thomas and Percy but they don’t believe him so at night when the other engines are sleeping, Edward goes to Toby’s shed until he sees that he is gone and the men had already taken him so Edward not wanting Toby to be stolen sets out to the thieves from taking Toby which Edward is able to stop Toby on time but then he soon realizes that the Toby was been taken by the two men who are actually workmen to the works to be mending, Edward feels embarrassed by this but Toby reassures him that he makes a great rescue engine. What makes the video so great was that Edward was given a flaw that is a in-character one, he deeply cares for his fellow engines would do anything to help them, so when he hears the two men taking Toby without hesitation immediately goes to rescue him only to find out they were just to take Toby to be fixed. I highly recommend watching the video for yourselves it’s such a great one and it could easily make a great official TTTE episode.

I saw someone reroten Edward strikes out similarly with this one, Edward was so worried as Harvey thinks he will be replaced, especially after he saw how big Rocky is, but he is still very kind to Rocky, and when both meet, Rocky says he wants to help Edward but Edward politely reject him (Instead of calling name to him), as he think if Rocky doesn't have to work, then Harveyw will stay, however, this also makes Edward so paranoid of Harvey as Rocky does bigger and stronger that he didn't look at the signal, the accident happens, and played similarly until Gordon crashes, making Edward cannot keep his worry a secret anymore, and he tells everyone and fetches Rocky, Harvey was distressed after that, however, Rocky kindly says Harvey is still needed as he can do something that he can't, moving on his own, he even says he's a bit jealous that Harvey can do that, and everyone agrees that everyone will be safer with two of them on the railway.

You know, there was one way that they could have written some flaws for Edward; write a story about Edward as a young engine. Back when he was less wise and less of a mentor figure. I mean Awdry showed Skarloey and Rheneas as children in his stories, because those were flashback stories to their younger days. And it worked. The same thing could have worked for Edward. You could give him flaws, without completely sniping his character that we know and love him for

Edward is a late 18th century train making him the oldest and "wisest". I think that an easy way to give him flaws would have been to have him do things the "old-fashioned" way while everyone else tries to teach him that there's a newer more efficient way to do things.

I feel like the fandom just kind of accepted Edward being an absolute saint after Edward's Exploit but they tend to forget almost no character in the entire franchise has no flaws. Especially when Edward kept being portrayed as a wise old engine more and more in later seasons and CGI

This was a very interesting, informative video! Bringing up a lot of good points about how main characters are allowed to have flaws and experiment with their personality, true Edward could have had some rewrites to his character, but at least they were trying to give some sort of personality to a fairly minor main character. Not every character is going to be perfect whether you like it or not, it’s all about experimenting with the character and at least trying to give them a sort of lead roll, even if it’s good or bad.

Before this video I didn’t really think Edward was seen as a flawed character, but after this, yeah I think these rewrites can happen and should happen. I think there might be room in the cast for old experienced engines to have flaws like the young engines. Edward and the Mail and Edward strikes rewrites are a good start. Which kinda makes me wonder what other episodes can Edward be more utilized in, what other fan stories can we see Edward be a interesting unique character. Edward has always been one of my favorite characters since watching the show. Even when he wasn't a main factor in many stories. I was always excited to see him on screen, so it didn't really matter to me whether he played a role in a story or not. That being said, I was a bit blind to the poor writing the Hit Era was doing in regards to his character and it was only after I got into the TTTE Fandom again that I started to realize this was a sad fact of reality. One example actually Edward the Great; As much as I loved the episode, I could see even that story could use a touchup, as there was some inconsistencies that kinda bugged me. I actually took the liberty of doing my own rewrite for that episode and I still have the Google document in my drive, if anyone is interested in reading it. In the end, writing flaws and all, Edward is still one of my favorite characters and one flaw I can see him having is that despite being the oldest and wisest engine on Sodor, he doesn't know everything. Hence why the Edward and the Mail episode is actually a good episode. The video as a whole is very eye-opening and I enjoyed watching it. Nice work!!! :D

It would also show that despite Henry's more gentler and peaceful sides in the HIT era, he would still be as grumpy, standoffish, irritable and jerky as he was from the classic series and rude towards newcomers like he was with Duck for example.

As much as people hate that episode for what it led up to, I think A Shed For Edward did a good job taking Edward and the Mail's premise and giving it more nuance. It has way more things working against Edward in that case to justify it all, but the same deal happens, Edward is a bit TOO nice for his own good and he takes a lot of unneccessary crap over it. I also loved the opening with him chiding James and Phillip amusing him by getting in on it. I also have to say, I don't think Saving Edward was a bad idea ON PAPER. Again it just needed more nuance. We know Edward is someone who would rather bust his wheels than give up and let everyone down (quite literally in Edward's Exploit) so I think a moment Edward kinda takes that to unneccessary levels when he's ill and just needs a simple tune up could have worked (I also love how Thomas and Gordon are used in that episode, it's a cute role reversal of their normal roles against Edward). The problem is that Edward isn't shown as too determined in that episode, in fact he's kinda shown to be a defeatist. Have to say, it is annoying how Edward Strikes Out is not only an extremely out of character episode but it's actually an IMPORTANT episode. It was the debut of Rocky, who is a key character and function throughout later Thomas.

I like the continuity from Edward Strikes Out to the Miller era, where Rocky and Edward are friends and, as stated, Edward and Rocky work together alot, and they needed to establish it.

My idea on how to rewrite "Edward Strikes Out" is to have him very firmly reassure Rocky that what the other engines have to say about him is not something that Rocky should let control him, and because of this video, I now am thinking that Rocky might overhear the rumors that he's there to replace Harvey, adding to his feelings of not being welcome on Sodor. Maybe Edward suggests to Harvey that he should get Rocky to aid him in clearing the pipes, while Harvey is more reluctant to get Rocky's help until Gordon details on them. My issue with "Edward and the Mail" is that despite him making the stops in a different order than Percy, his crew should still have unloaded the correct mail.

The only times where Edward does have good flaws when justified are Edward's Day Out and Bertie's Chase. That trait was carried over to Edward's Impatience giving him a new side to him that he hates being late as he was old and his branch line trains had to run to time. So I don't see that as out of character. It is only the HiT era that makes me angry (apart from the exception of Edward the Great). I rather have Edward be a supporting character like he is in S3-5 rather than being forced as a main character that could ruin his persona. And I love that in Edward's Fishy Travels, he is good at handling trucks but he wouldn't be that good at keeping fish vans in line cause they like having big engines to pull them. Even in Homeless Engines, him lashing out at Philip is justified and not out of character as the latter wasn't listening to him and caused their shed roof to cave in of snow. Given the situation he previously been in before, Edward couldn't take it anymore as he needed not only peace, but also a place to be.

As a character, Edward has a facade of simplicity yet when fundamentally understanding and writing for his character, it can become quite complicated. He has had a long and detailed journey through the railway series and Thomas and friends, which led to many writers misunderstanding him. Thankfully this video presents a strong deconstruction of Edward, specifically within the hit era where they failed to understand what made Edward “the” Great yet somehow managed to elaborate and expand his character in new ways when they were not focused on his core pre established traits. Your exploration of this era and Edward as a character is quite interesting and considers all aspect of the wise figure through this run of the show. Edward is very impressed with the size of this crane beside him. Soon, the crane spoke. Crane: Hello. I’m Rocky. What is your name? Edward: *being respectful and keeps his feelings to himself* I’m Edward. Pleased to meet you, Rocky. Rocky noticed how Edward sounded a bit cold. Rocky: Are you okay? Did I do something wrong? Edward: No, no. You didn’t do anything wrong. I’m fine, Rocky. Thank you for the concern. Rocky: Alright. So, is that your train back there? Edward: Yes. Rocky: Do be careful. I’ve heard some workmen saying some of the freight cars are old and ready to break. Edward: I doubt a simple run would cause them to break, but I’ll keep that in mind. Rocky: Alright then. See you later, Edward. Edward: Take care. And Edward puffs away. See, this is how I see the conversation would be. Edward having a civil conversation and not letting his skepticism control his words.

As Edward is one of my favorites, I liked watching this video explaining a new light on explaining about his portrayed flaws. I liked the whole explanation on the mail episode where the others giving pressure to Edward made him feel insecure. Also, I would love for somebody to use your reworked Edward Strikes out storyline to make it more focused in the right pace and character behavior. I liked watching this and deserves a sub from me.

Edward, like many fans, had always been one of my favorite characters. In fact, he's in my top three alongside James and Toby. Personally, I think you can give Edward flaws, as long as they make sense for his character, that's most of the reason why I think HiT era Emily falls flat. ESO is the obvious dud in that sense but E&TM isn't so bad in theory. Although I highly doubt Edward would be THIS neurotic by simply asking for help. He's done so before in episodes like Saved From Scrap (towards the Vicar). Good video, btw, can't wait to see what you talk about next!

You should be able to expand on a character and change them now and then. I've seen Edward distracted, pessimistic, neurotic, impatient, gossipy, and i've even seen him break rules and put his foot in it laughing at Thomas. He does have flaws. We should be able to make new stuff up about his character without people fighting about it though, otherwise he doesn't get new stories.

Heck the first time we see Edward, he's crying because the other engines teased him. He comes across as a rather thin skinned character at times, not always able to fight back, he can disapline but when the engines get straight up NASTY about it, Edward's a bit of a doormat.

"Edward strikes out" is definitely James impersonating Edward. Edward also believed in Thomas' racist rumor about Neville befriending Arry and Bert along with James, Emily and Percy except for Gordon, Henry and Toby in "Thomas and the new engine" and also made fun of Thomas' new funnel in "Slippy Sodor". I do agree on "A shed for Edward" can be a different side of Edward showing us that he cannot always know when to say yes or no when given the choice to sleep with Phillip.

I feel like the problem of Edward's writing is how Thomas was being written in season 7-21. Thomas nowadays is portrayed as more kind and encouraging kinda making Edward drift in the background. For instance in Silly Billy, it would've been a great idea to pair Billy with Edward. Edward's kindness but overall impatient and savvy personality would've been great with Billy's rebellious and cocky personality. Or in Bust my Buffers, Edward could've encouraged Gordon instead of Thomas.

That's an excellent analysis of Edward in the Hit era, buddy! While I still despise "Edward Strikes Out", I see what you mean about Edward's experience with cranes throughout the series. Certainly, Harvey should've had a bigger role, and Edward should not be rude. I wasn't too sure what to think of James taking Edward's role anyway...since he doesn't have to despise everything new. Still, anything to fix Edward's character. And I honestly haven't seen "Edward and the Mail", but I believe it's not one of the best. However, I get every character should have flaws, and Edward pretty much had a story already. He can improve at anything. And I still enjoy "Edward the Very Useful Engine" and "Old Reliable Edward" because they portray Edward. I also applaud "A Shed for Edward" for having Edward return to Wellsworth. After all, that's where he works. But anyway, I may as well watch "Edward and the Mail" to place my thoughts. But it may not be too great, if you know I mean. Great depth anyway. 👍 And no matter how messed up his character is in the Hit era, I still love Edward.

I wouldn’t even have Edward be cold towards Rocky, I’d keep Edward nice towards Rocky, but I love your idea of adding Harvey in. Harvey getting something bigger to do during the HiT era is nice.

i think they could've written edward strikes out with the motive of edward, the old and experienced one, being conservative and disliking modern replacements like ''the old one always worked fine, we dont need this new nosense''. this would at least kept some consistency and still add a flaw to him to work with. moral: stay open to new things. but hit messed up. 5:57 i really like your theory and i think you could've tied it in with my motive pretty good aswell. very good and entertaining video btw. :)

I was thinking the same thing why Edward didn't like Rocky at first because he did had an accident when Big Mickey knocked him over with a ship boiler in season 7 which is Edward's Brass Band and that's why he hated Cranes since so I could understand why he didn't like Rocky just like you said. Something i think the Hit Era should've done with Edward was at least have him have a dynamic with Emily, the (at the time) newbie engine. Say that Edward was getting put down because of his age. Usually, he doesn't get very affected by being called old, but an engine, lets say James, says something particularly nasty to him and THAT one insult gets to him. Then Emily comes along, notices Edward and confronts him about it. Emily then tells him a little secret of hers, something along the lines of "If it makes you feel any better, I'm actually older than you". The reason she'd say this is because her basis, the GNR Stirling Single, was built in the 1870s, earlier than Edward's basis, the Furness K2 "Larger Seagull" locomotive. So yeah, Emily's older than Edward. The more you know.

How I would fix Edward Strikes Out: Instead of Edward and Gordon being rude to Rocky, what if Rocky is the rude one. Gordon witnesses Rocky making fun of Harvey for not being as strong as him and tells Edward. This makes Edward decide not to use Rocky. Later, someone gets into an accident and Edward takes the old twin cranes to the site of the wreck. However, in the middle of the clean up, Gordon gets into a crash and the cranes aren't available. If we need to fulfill the 7 minute runtime, have Edward ask Harvey for help with clearing up the mess. However, when they arrive, Gordon is completely tipped over and Harvey can't lift him back on the rails. Edward then gets Rocky and tells him he'll only bring him if he apologizes to Harvey. When Harvey feels like he's gonna be insulted again, Rocky brings up how he secretly feels jealous of him for being able to move and not being so heavy. He lifts Gordon back onto the rails, and Rocky and Harvey become friends.

Am the only where thinks that ,,Edwards strikes out“ is kinda overhated? Yeah Edward is a jerk in this episode and it is a bit of a middlefinger to continuity. But it has a good moral ,Rocky is decent and the plot isnˋt that bad. Edward Strikes Out should’ve been called Edward and the Runaway Crane and here’s how the episode should’ve been: the episode starts with narrator explaining who Edward is and then it would cut to Edward puffing into Brendam docks to see Gordon and Percy angry and upset. Edward asks them what’s wrong and Gordon tells them that the new crane (Rocky) is very rude and unpleasant and tells him to watch out. Edward heeds Gordon’s warning and then goes to collect his pipe train. When Edward backs downs into his goods train next to Rocky, Rocky looks down at him and starts making rude remarks towards Edward and tells that he’s old, frail, and useless. Edward knows what Rocky is saying is not true and tells him that he may be old but he’s still quite useful and Rocky then says more rude things to Edward, but Edward ignores him and puffs away when the guard blows his whistle. Later on Henry arrives to collect Rocky and take him to a new location. Rocky says rude things to Henry which obviously makes Henry upset. Henry then pulls Rocky out of the docks and while they’re on Gordon’s hill, the coupling between Henry and Rocky snaps and Rocky becomes a runaway. Rocky races down Gordon’s hill with ever increasing speed. Meanwhile Edward is puffing down the line after finishing delivering the pipes and then a loud HEEELLLP and then Rocky races by Edward and then Edward says ‘oh no, Rocky’s a runaway I must save him’ and then Edward chases after Rocky. It would be a intense runaway and would be able to overtake Rocky and the signalman who change the points so Edward would go onto Rocky’s line and Rocky then slams into Edward and then Edward slams on his breaks and is then horrified to Thomas with Annie and Clarabel on the same line as Edward and Edward puts every once of strength he has against Rocky to save Rocky, Thomas, Annie, and Clarabel. Thankfully the signal man changes the points and Edward and Rocky are diverted into a siding and stops mere inches from the buffers. Everyone cheers for Edward for saving Rocky, Thomas, Annie, and Clarabel from a terrible accident and Rocky then apologizes to Edward for being so rude to him and Edward forgives him. The scene would then cut to another of the narrator saying that Edward and Rocky are now good friends and Rocky now helps clean up accidents and also apologized to the other engines that Rocky was rude too. I genuinely wish that THIS was the official episode instead of what we got.

Be real, if Percy was female instead of male, then Edward would’ve been a more prominent main character in the classic series and in the Brenner era and he would’ve been way better treated in the hit era since he would’ve been the 5th boy instead of the 6th. He also wouldn’t had been written off in season 21. This is what Edward’s starring episodes in the Classic era would’ve been if Percy was female instead of male (but still have her be named Percy and have her look and sound identical to her male counterpart in every single way) 1. Steady Eddie (season 12) This is what Edward’s starring episodes in the Brenner era would’ve been if Percy was female instead of male (but still have her be named Percy and have her look and sound identical to her male counterpart in every single way) 1. No more Mr. nice engine (The roles of Hiro and Edward reversed and the episode retitled as Edward’s sticky spill) (season 17) 2. Old reliable Edward (season 18) 3. Edward, Henry and the spots (A rewritten version of Henry’s spots trouble) (season 19) 4. Rocky Rescue (Thomas swapped out with Edward) (season 19) 5. 3 engines gruff (season 20) (Edward taking Thomas’s role as the voice of reason and have it instead be on Edward’s branch line instead of Thomas’ branch line) 6. Dowager Hatt’s busy day (if Duck stays a main character throughout the Hit, Miller, and Brenner eras) (season 21) 7. P.A Problems (season 21) As you can see here, Percy being female would’ve benefited the franchise A LOT in the long run, especially Henry and Edward. Edward would’ve still had been unfortunately written out in season 22, but at least the writing off of Edward would’ve been a last minute decision instead of always planned since he would’ve been the 5th boy instead of the 6th. Also since Edward would’ve been more prominent in the classic series and the Brenner era along with being way better treated in the Hit era, then it would’ve destroyed the argument that “Edward is stronger as a side character than as a main” since Edward would’ve been more prominent than Henry and almost as prominent as James in the classic series, would’ve been just as prominent as the others while staying perfectly in character in the Hit era, and would’ve had the same amount of starring episodes as Henry in the Brenner era while staying perfectly in character. This probably would’ve all had been the case, since the writers season 8 onwards would’ve saw the dynamic between Edward and Percy in season 5 and in Magic Railroad and they definitely would’ve sometimes utilized it when writing starring episodes for Edward. Of course you can still have Edward give advice to other characters in other episodes where Edward’s not the starring character. I genuinely wish that all of this was the case and I’m genuinely frustrated that it wasn’t. Percy is a uni gender name short for both Perseus and Persephone so Percy totally could’ve been female.

My main issue with Edward and the Mail is that Edward didn't do anything wrong when he delivered the mail. He didn't unload the train, he took the train to the destinations and then the people on the platform unloaded the wrong bags. How is that Edward's fault? But also, he wouldn't have any issues with asking for help

I guess we do have a large biased for Edward…I’m guilty of that lol Especially since my rewrite of Edward Strikes Out would be James Strikes Out instead. For my rewrite of Edward The Great (DO NOT WATCH causes it’s horrible XD), it takes place after Edward’s Exploit, and Edward doesn’t give a scrap about winning the race since he knows there’s nothing to race for Honestly I what could be a cool way to write in a flaw, Edward being in his youth, which formed him into the character he is today

You can write flaws for Edward, but you need to be very careful about it. I think it could emphasise on how Edward doesn't want to disappoint the others rather than looking silly, but that's just me.

Edward is an inherently broken character, and I'm really tired of how this fandom treats him like some god. No matter what people want to say, he is too perfect, which is a problem. Making one of your main characters perfect isn't good because then they are unrealistic and unrelatable. Every Edward centered story requires him to constantly keep proving himself to everyone. Edward's Day Out, Edward and Gordon, Old Iron, Edward's Exploit, Edward the Really Useful Engine, and the list goes on. If Edward is such a good character, why does he have to keep proving himself? Yeah, Edward and the Mail shows us what flaws Edward could have, but it doesn't work because it's a one off concept we never see again. And people really love to jump on the whole "Edward is impatient," argument because of two lines he said. I'm sorry but if you think Edward is impatient because of that then swap out his lines for any other main character in the show and tell me if it sounds wrong coming from them (hint: it won't.) Edward is the weakest character of the main 11, it's no contest. Edward isn't even a good mentor character, Toby is much better. Toby fills every role Edward does, and so much more, to the point where Edward isn't even needed. Edward is not who I aspire to be like. Toby is.
