A squib is a small explosive device, they're usually used to simulate being shot in movies. A damp squib won't go off so it's useless, hence the phrase.

There is a documentary about "frivolous lawsuits" called Hot Coffee. It's quite eye opening. Part of the documentary does focus on the famous hot coffee lawsuit and I think it might change people's minds. There had been over 1000 complaints about the coffee being far too hot and McDonalds did nothing about it, it turned out it was a faulty machine that needed maintenance but McDonalds ignored it. The server then gave a 79 year old lady a cup of coffee but didn't secure the lid, so it popped off and gave the lady horrific burns to her legs and genitalia. The lady spent 8 days in hospital and never fully recovered before she died, and had to have many very painful skin graft operations as a result of negligence. A Quote from Wikipedia "The Liebeck case became a flashpoint in the debate in the United States over tort reform. It was cited by some as an example of frivolous litigation;[5] ABC News called the case "the poster child of excessive lawsuits",[6] while the legal scholar Jonathan Turley argued that the claim was "a meaningful and worthy lawsuit".[7] Ex-attorney Susan Saladoff sees the portrayal in the media as purposeful misrepresentation due to political and corporate influence."

The lady actually only sued for 20 000 dollars, just to cover her medical bills. She got 160 000 dollars for that, the other 2.6 million dollars was punitive and were based of Mc Dobalds coffee sales in the country, over two days. In the end, they settled out of court, so she probably got much less, but more than she expected in the beginning.

You need to read up on those lawsuits before dismissing them. The coffee one was 100% legit and the blame lay with the corporation.

It's so sad that they were so good with the smear campaign that even after all this time people believe it was a frivolous case.

Still a couple of episodes to go. Anniversary episodes they were called? League of Gentlemen had a couple as well, but I think unless recorded off Tv as they were broadcast or bought on DVD I don’t know where outside the UK you could watch them.

As it happens, the coffee incident wasn’t as clear cut as it seemed. The lady in question suffered severe burns that required skin grafts, and she was hospitalised for over a week. Despite that, all she was claiming for was hospital expenses (when are you lot going to introduce a national health system????), and her daughter’s loss of earnings for having to look after her. The estimated claim was for $20,000. The defendant, McDonalds refused, offering a paltry $800. As a consequence she took the tossers to court, hence the large award of just under $3,000,000 compensatory and punitive damages. That being said, an unknown settlement was reached to avoid further litigation.
