Yo Mark NP, I totally agree, but let's get that right--it's the NEWARK, NJ-STYLE ITALIAN HOT DOG, and you DEFINITELY CAN SAUSAGE A HOT DOG! I have lived in Atlantic City since '86, and unfortunately SOUTH Jersey doesn't have a clue.😉I was born and raised in Newark, but when I was 10-12 (1963-65) I lived on West Market St. just past where it met up with Warren St. and there was this hot dog joint close by (the name of which I cannot recall), but I used to hang out there and play pinball after school and every other song played on the jukebox was the Four Seasons. Anyway I LOVED it then and still have love for the Italian Hot Dog/Sausage they made there. If you know how things were back then, you need to know that my Mom was not pleased with me hanging out in this Italian hot dog joint after school, and I could not say I didn't because the smell of the food would get in my clothes.😆 I have to clarify that unlike DD's they would mix medium-diced potatoes with the peppers and onions before adding them to the bun, and also you could get a combo of hot dog AND sausage on the same roll (OMG). NOW let me state for the record that if it is not on the pocket roll that is made from the pizza dough, then it is NOT to be called a Newark-Style Italian Hot Dog. Some idiots on the Boardwalk tried to tell me to just make it with a sub roll, and of course I told them to "Fuggedaboutit”! (( Psst--If you venture down to Linwood, NJ--20 minutes from AC--you CAN check out their take on a real-deal NEWARK, NJ-STYLE ITALIAN HOT DOG at La Pizzatega in nearby Linwood, NJ. Love these memories! Wow! You are absolutely correct to distinguish a Newark style Italian hot dog from other variations. I discuss the Chambersburg (Trenton) style in this article I recently wrote: www.fiftygrande.com/a-guide-to-eastern-pennsylvania-hot-dog-serving-styles/ A very different experience! As for the pizza bread, you'll have to ask around Newark which bakeries still make them for the NEWARK style IHD giants!

Italian-style is my favorite but I ask for the potatoes well-done because I don't like them soggy and greasy. When I go to Jimmy Buff's, I like to order a combo with cheesesteak (instead of Italian Sausage) and hot dog and they mesh well with the potatoes, onions, and peppers. I've also made Italian Hot Dogs with Texas-made all-beef smoked sausages and they take the Italian Hot Dog to the next level in my opinion.

Will they layer the dog like you want ?, i like mustard in 1st then hotdogs with peppers & onions in the pizza bread,, then potatoes on top with ketchup. I don't want ketchup on my dog/peppers, or mustard on my potatoes

You've obviously never had one. In Union, New Jersey we had access to Jimmy Buffs, Dee's (in Union), Jim's (Vauxhall). They were all awesome. You could even get an Italian Sausage sandwich and some places served a combo (sausage and hotdog). Don't knock it until you tried it.

It doesn’t originate in Italy, it’s a dish created by Italian immigrants. Philly cheesesteaks are also a dish invented by an Italian immigrant. Even Italian meat balls don’t come from Italy
