Thanks, found this very insightful. My Italian great great grandparents lived on 10th street from 1908 - 1910 working as fruit dealers, possibly at the same market. They attended the Our Lady of Good Counsel church for Italians. They were poor and returned to Italy in 1911 because life in America wasn't what they imagined.

I used to live at 9th and hall. Pretty cool how you get to know the actual people who live and grew up in the neighborhood. I think when I lived there Espositos had a pretty wicked fire that gutted the place. If I remember correctly they had it up and running again in under a years time. Long live Joe Scavool!

@@christinagraham2915 It's also a hit on the Political circuit - if you do local politics, you stop here - going back to the Rizzo years. I got my "clementine" fix anuallly - same with local mussels.

At least the prices at those markets were normal, not novelty prices like at most farmers markets…

just like the business owner said, it was a haven for immigrants and still is. The Italians didn't get pushed out but rather they aged out. Their children went to school, assimilated, and prospered in the more traditional American way leaving new immigrant groups to fill their shoes. The story of New York's little Italy and Brooklyn's Carrol Gardens neighborhood is more a story of gentrification than this is.
