“It is us today. It will be you tomorrow.”-Emperor Haile Selassie in 1936 addressing the League of Nations after they stood by and watched as fascist Italy broke international law and invaded Ethiopia. The Italians used chemical weapons indiscriminately which turned the war in their favor. It is believed that the international community’s lack of a response emboldened Hitler into launching his campaigns and was a pretext to WWII.

A thing regarding the first Ethiopian campaign: the General in chief of the armies in Eritrea Oreste Baratieri, who had already fought alongside Giuseppe Garibaldi during the Italian unification, wanted to fight in a more cautious and slow way, because he didn’t know the territory very well and preferred to gain more intel before advancing, but prime minister Crispi highly underestimated the size and armaments of the Ethiopian army and obliged him to advance recklessly without scouting the area first - this led to the ambush of Adwa

I’ve been scrolling through the comments to check for any repeated myths and i’ll compile a few here: A) “european supplied arms” - many of the weapons used by ethiopian soldiers in the first war would’ve been purchased from markets or arms traders, not given. The most prominent arms dealers were not russian or british, but french (including poet Arthur Rimbaud). Some guns _were_ gifted, though. Ironically, the Italians gave many quality guns to Menelik, back when they were trying to woo him into an alliance against former Emperor Yohannes, who died fighting Mahdists at Gallabat. To my knowledge, the british hardly were involved, actually. I don’t know where that one came from. B) “tribal ethiopia” If you use “tribe” as an aesthetic judgement based on how a place looks, then sure, i guess. But that should not inform what you think of the complexity or “advancement” of their state. Solomonic Ethiopia was one of the longest-lasting empires in history, ruled through a complex beaurocracy with entrenched nobility, clergy, and commoners all interacting in ways that might remind you of europe or the middle east. The same statement honestly applied to many pre-colonial african polities. Ethiopia was not organized around kin-based relations or a basic hierarchy as the word “tribe” entails, but instead saw a complex system of governors, generals, and other officials who were all (atleast theoretically) united under a “king of kings”. C) “abyssinia” Abyssinia is an exonym (foreign name). It would be more accurate to call the empire “ethiopia”, unless you are making a european perspective, which this video isn’t. The emperor was crowned “king of kings of Ethiopia”. D) “ethiopian army” There was not exactly an “ethiopian army”. There were multiple provincial / regional armies that were headed by a _ras_ or _negus_ and which could be called upon by those with positions above them.

For anyone wondering the treaty of Wuchale was the agreement which formalised the Italo-Ethiopian border and the dispute was a translation error where the Italian treaty said that Ethiopia *had* to conduct foreign affairs via Italy whereas the Amharic version (the one Ethiopia kept) said that Ethiopia *could* conduct foreign affairs through Italy but that there was no obligation to. If anybody knows more about this than me and wants to add or correct something please let me know.

I know that many of this comments are just memes, but for who is calling Italy “weak” I want to explain why the first Ethiopian war was lost. We simply underestimated our enemy, we thought that they would be unorganized and little to not armed with firearms. So we sent about 20.000 men, wich many of them were Ascari (Eritrean division in Italian army) armed with outdated Vetterelli’s rifle. Little did we know that Ethiopians had bought about 100.000 modern rifles from Russia, and had even modern artillery pieces and some machineguns. As well shown in the video our advance was little, because of logistics (Italy is in the center of the Mediterranean, so not so near to the Horn of Africa) plus the rough terrain of Ethiopia. Main battle of the war was the battle of Adua, were Italy was completly outnumbered; we are talking about: 17.700 men and 56 artillery pieces for Italians and 100.000 men (wich 80.000 with rifles) and 42 artillery pieces and some machineguns. The odds were almost 6:1 for the Ethiopians, and even so the Italians fought till the last, taking Ethiopia between 12.000 to 17.000 casualties. After that the pressure by the citizens on the state, made the government fall, and the cost of bringing other armies to conquer Ethiopia, and the internal problems with protestants, led to the peace treaty between the countries.
@Airless_
@Airless_ 4 жыл бұрын
That’s also why Mussolini invested so much to conquer the country, to show the Italian people that fascism could do what democracy wasn’t able to. From the conquest of Ethiopia Italy didn’t gain much, many (me also) think that it was a waste of resources and men. And that effort of Italy in the second Ethiopian war led to an impairment of the army. For that Italy should have entered WW2 in 1941-1942 to be at its “full power”, but Mussolini thought that the war would have ended faster than that, so he decided to join it as soon as possible. As he said: “I just need some thousands of men deaths to sit at the winners table”

The Iraqis outnumbered the Coalition in both wars. Even if they had the same equipment, the Iraqis still would have lost due to doctrine, leadership, and logistics.
