I love the stem extension! Another way to make your drawing symmetrical is to fold the paper and press it against a window during the day. Works great. I had a black cat years ago that loved to chow on the pumpkin guts when I carved. I miss him!

My favourite thing about Christine is her lack of irony. Most artists I know are so self-effacing and cynical but she's just so straight forward and like really tries, it's very inspirational.

You know most artists? That’s awesome you know most artists that personally to criticize them that they’re ALL self effacing and cynical. Although she carved an amazing looking pumpkin, all she did was give tips and ideas in how to carve a pumpkin and she gave good advice but how is that being straight forward? Being straight forward is someone who doesn’t beat around the bush, criticizing others or tells you like it is without holding back. I didn’t hear that from her. I heard how to carve a pumpkin. Why even have the need to bring up other artist? Like really! Lol

Use a dry-erase marker when drawing on your pumpkin design. It saves a lot of headaches trying to scrub off Sharpie. ETA: We also use a drill with a paint-stirring attachment to get all the seeds out! I've also seen people also use hand mixers to get seeds and goop out.

When she used the rubbing alcohol, it looked very easy to take off the black sharpie. But that’s another good idea to use a dry eraser marker 😊

rubbing alcohol doesn't involve scrubbing at all. dry erase markers can get weird and also rub off more easily whilst trying to carve intricate designs

@@yeeaahhzz I've had all sorts of trouble getting Sharpie off. I've found alcohol to be hit or miss, but acetone works super well. Sometimes the Sharpie can "bleed" into the pumpkin flesh (after carving) when you're trying to remove it with alcohol, which is impossible to remove. I've switched to dry erase markers, but we don't typically do super elaborate/intricate carvings. I think both are good for their specific purposes!

I’m laughing Ms McConnell. You are carving your pumpkin on a beautifully polished dining room table. I have to do it outside, as I make such an AWFUL mess. I am in awe of your tidiness. 👍🏻🎃👍🏻 I adore the additional effects, it makes the pumpkin itself look an evil one that you managed to find. In Scotland, in the 1960s &70s we had turnips to carve - pumpkins were unheard of. A neep and a small kitchen knife. Then a piece of wire for a handle and a candle stub inside. My mother made great scary turnip “ heids” !

We had a very brief cool spell come through and the neighbors put out carved 3 pumpkins. You could see the effort they are made into just simply carving the pumpkins. One had his mouth wide open- super fun and cute, but he was the first to fall, rather cave-in. Then temps shot back up to the 90's and the other 2 were casualties of the heat. I was actually rather sad about it.

I love this! Quick tip! If you use a hand mixer, it’s a quick and easy way to gut the pumpkin and remove the strings.

Wow, I’ve never seen anyone combine additive sculpting with pumpkin carving before, it has a unique look that I might try someday. Also love the idea of adding a bespoke candle scent to the bottom of the pumpkin. Pro tip: Instead of using rubbing alcohol to erase the sharpie you can buy one of those rainbow packs of sharpies and use the red, orange, or green sharpie depending on your pumpkins coloration. The markers are nigh on impossible to see at night with a candle inside. Alternatively, after you draw your design with a black sharpie, and cut it out, you can paint the entire pumpkin black for maximum contrast.

I carve the bottom out so the top doesn't fall in when l carve clean the pumpkin guts l learn this trick years ago on garden holiday tv shows & when college days as florist green house management land scraping . I grew my own as well as go to the best pumpkin stands for that next pumpkin sculpture. The trick of using the heat gun to 'set' the polymer clay is brilliant. Thank you for that. I use a dedicated small electric hand mixer (the type that looks like a miniature food mixer) for blending clay. I think I picked up that trick from the team that brought us Wallace and Gromit.
